About
It's worth the climb up the steep stairway to see what's inside this lovely Italianate home built in 1858: an actual lead mine, Civil War memorabilia, items honoring Ulysses S. Grant (including an original painting depicting Robert E. Lee's surrender to Grant), plus other historical articles from Galena and Jo Daviess County.

Gem of American Museums
Oct 2021
The most fun, exceptional museum I have visited outside of Independence Hall and the Chicago Field Museum. This is a charming, welcoming, and history-rich locale with an easy, self-paced approach to sharing unique Civil War and Driftless Area exhibits. Each exhibit is engaging, modern, and detailed. I recommend taking at least 2 and a half hours to see everything. 19th century history fans will not be disappointed. Friendly, accommodating staff. Gorgeous prewar architecture. A true gem of Midwest museums.

Even if your not into museums its worth going to this one to get some history of the area. Self guided, lots of artifacts. Won't lie didn't know much about President grant so was interesting to learn more. Lots of history for this little town. They are doing a great job to keep the history alive. Are they telling everything? slavery? 9 generals came from Galena - had not idea. Grateful its there. Thank you.

GREAT Museum in a small town - lots of history!
Aug 2021
Visiting this museum to see "Peace in Union" was the purpose of our trip, and well worth it. Easy to get to, great displays. Grant's history in Galena is probably not widely known. Combining a visit here with a visit to Grant's home is a great way to experience it.

Best Hidden Gem in the Mid-West
Jul 2021
There simply is no way to describe how incredible in so many ways this town is! I can not wait to come back! The slower pace the absolutely stunning landscapes, the food, the romance, the HISTORY there really are not words for this place that describe it correctly. There really is something for everyone here and the serenity that it brings is second to none. Beautiful well kept town so rich in history it leaves your head spinning and yet most have never heard of it let alone been there and therefore most are missing out on this hidden gem!

Great artifacts
Jun 2021 • Couples
The artifacts on display here are amazing! But, this place either needs an upgrade or a new building needs to be built. The holograms that we were shown were not very lit up and could barely see them. The 2nd floor needs to be more lit up & the stairs would be hard to climb for elderly people. But the 2nd floor in my opinion had the best artifacts. The gift shop needs more unique items to buy.

Always love visiting small towns' historical societies.

Glad we waited til we had driven around and visited some of Galena's sites for a couple days to better appreciate the exhibits and mini-prez from the lovely gift shop/admissions attendant. We're still not sure how the area was missed by the Ice Age glaciers, leading to the area being called "driftless," but the topography is pretty stunning. The museum's topographical diorama added much perspective after we had driven the off-the-Main Street roads to get to various bluffs and preserves. My only critique is I wish these museums would take advantage of cell phone apps - I'm so sure the nearby high school senior class could develop one and it could help bolster the historical info and materials that could be shared. Something to think about.

Great Historical Museum
May 2021
Excellent museum with so much history and information on Galena. Of course, US Grant gets top billing and the archives relating to him and family are great. But there is much to the area, from the lead mine (the musuem has an old shaft within it) to steamboats to Civil War era to today. The original Nast painting of the surrender at Appomattox is awesome - who would have thought it was here. Very friendly staff who was knowledgable about the area. The museum is two stories with the stairway very narrow, but the second floor is worth it. Worth every bit of the admission price.

So much to learn, great exhibits
May 2021
We really enjoyed our time here and could easily have spent more than the nearly 2 hours we wandered through the halls. The staff is quite knowledgeable and shares information freely. She then gave us great advise on what else to do in town, where to eat, what to see. Excellent stop!
