small ski resort

Restaurants and bars look recently remodeled. Ski lifts were adequate. Lots of runs. Hotel looks old and run down.

No, this isn't Vail, but 2.5 hours from Chicago you won't find anything near as good. Chestnut Mountain is in Illinois' Driftless Area, which wasn't flattened completely by glaciers (like the rest of Illinois) thousands of years ago. As such, Chestnut has legitimate hills on which to ski. The ski school for the kiddos is great as is the private... More

A group of us went up to Galena last weekend to do some skiing. Chestnut is a nice medium size resort which is only 2 hour drive from Peoria. It has some open area for beginners and some challenging slopes for intermediate skiers like myself for being into the Midwest. The trail length are okay considering I had skied other... More

Chestnut Mountain is great for us "flatlanders" stuck in the Midwest, but still love to ski. I grew up skiing here, now my 3 young daughters learned here. We have done both private and group lessons for the kids, and the teachers are friendly and effective. After a morning of lessons, my pre-k daughter was a confident skier. They have... More

Great views of the Mississippi from the lodge which is really located at the top,of the hill. Hills for all level of skier. Sit by the fire and enjoy a great hot chocolate too. Reasonable lift ticket prices

What a beautiful location to learn to ski The ski instructors are amazing. In my mid forties I decided it was time to learn when I signed up my child for lessons. We each had a private lesson which is not expensive at all and totally worth the $50 per hour. My 7yo was amazing the instructor even provided tips... More

Great considering it's a Midwest hill that's close to Chicago. Nice views overlooking the river. They do a good job keeping their runs open. It offers runs for beginners to some fairly fun black diamonds. Kids like it.

I have not stayed at the lodge, but the skiing is by far the best within three hours of Chicago! Absolutely gorgeous natural hills and better snow than I usually find in Wisconsin. Well worth the drive.

I didn't die. There were a lot of people so getting down the hills was sometimes tricky. The beginner hills are really easy except for old main which is pretty steep for a beginner hill. might go back here if i get someone else to go with me.

We stayed here with 17 people. Most were first time skiiers/snowboarders. I must mention we found it incredibly difficult to stay in touch with one another bc there is no cell service or wifi. Hotel has wifi, but it does not work. This showed to be most important when one of our kids broke their collarbone and I could not... More
