My boyfriend and I decided to have a weekend getaway at The Goldmoor. We both enjoy being outdoors so even though there isn’t much you can do in Galena at the moment with COVID-19 restrictions, hiking was a good alternative for us. Horseshoe mound preserve is absolutely beautiful and very clean! The drive up to the parking area is a lot of fun too, I would definitely recommend a 4WD vehicle to make it smoother. We both really enjoyed the hike, it’s very hilly and gives you a great workout! There are a lot of amazing views to see at this place. Would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves nature.

Great little spot that gives you an overlook of Galena. Not super close but not super far either. It's a narrow drive up, but once you make it up, you're greeted with a nice stone ring where you can sit and they have stalls pointing you in the direction of the summer sunrise/sunset, winter sunrise/sunset, true north, and true south. There's also picnic tables and a porta potty up there.

There is also a few trails. We were the only ones there in the park, so great covid activity. One trail was a loop that's almost a mile long that goes past a nice scenic overlook and also goes up and down the mountain. The trail itself is over maintained grass which is nice. Parts of the trail are steep though which can be tough for some populations, and the grass doesn't help there. There is also some kind of clue based activity for kids, almost like a scavenger hunt. Didn't follow it through though. There was a second trail that was a .2 one way trail leading to another over look that I didn't go down. All in all, it was a great way to spend an hour on a sunny afternoon. Would def do again if in the area.

This was only about 15- 20minutes drive from downtown galena.. ( also has poke stops for u pokemon hunters)
Anyways. There is free parking there is a box if u want to donate $ the view from the top is beautiful they have a few free telescope for u to view galena and the surrounding areas. Place to sit and a few benches.. so the paths are mowed down no matter which way you choose to take u will come back up another close path does have steep hills.. it’s only about 1 mile around trip but feels like more with the hills.. nothing to view but forest and open land on trails but def was glad we stopped..there is a port-a- potty on site by parking.

Approximately 2 miles from Main Street in Galena is Horsehoe Mound Preserve. Easy to follow directions got my husband and I there in time to see a beautiful sunset. You can see Wisconsin, Iowa from this location. Well done half crescent amphitheatre type rocks and notations for sun spots for summer solstice, true north, etc. Couple of picnic tables where people were enjoying pizza and the view when we got there. Free . Ample free parking. Open sunrise to sunset. Well worth the side trip.

Wow! This amazing reserve offers several beautiful panoramic views. The hikes are fairly easy and there are several different vista points to enjoy views in the different directions. I would highly recommend doing each small trail to enjoy views of the Mississippi and the tri-states. Bring along a simple picnic to sit and enjoy at one of the several amazing vista points! There are not many tables, but several nice benches. This place is a real treat and worth the stop!

Located at 1679 North Blackjack Road, off U.S. Highway 20, at the eastern gateway to the historic community of Galena, Horseshoe Mound is one of the most scenic properties in all of northern Illinois. Visitors can explore the 200-acre preserve, hike, picnic, learn about geology and enjoy a panoramic view of Galena, the Mississippi River and three states--Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin. Open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, Horseshoe Mound has been open to the public since 2014. Thanks to a land acquisition in 2018, a new overlook, the Spiroff Overlook, which is located north on the trail from the main parking circle, is available to hikers. A trail now winds through a restored oak savanna and unique rock outcroppings to stunning views of the surrounding countryside, downtown Galena and beyond into Iowa and Wisconsin. A booklet is available at the kiosk that tells about the history, geology and natural wonders of Galena and the Driftless Area and its hills and valleys in Jo Daviess County that were formed during the last Ice Age.

Must see! This was a short drive from downtown Galena and absolutely beautiful. It is a very high elevation offering great views.very peaceful nice picnic spot. Be aware down a dirt road— you turn near a farm- we missed it first time we drive by.

Panoramic view of Galena and surrounding area. If you are in Galena, you need to make a stop here if you want to get away from town. The only advise I will give is that the main trail is "rugged". I was here on a 90 degree day so I was sure glad I had a big bottle of water with me. Otherwise a great memory. Enjoy!

Yesterday, I took my three boys here. It is unbelievably beautiful! The breathtaking views, the mature trees, stones made it an unforgettable experience.
This place would definitely be the perfect spot for meditation. Since yesterday was the Equinox, perhaps this visit will become a new family tradition.
