About
A unique museum at Ellinikon village, the birthplace of the internationally well known Greek sculptor Theodoros Papayiannis. His work although depicts the tradition of Epirus, is also modern and includes sculptures with ecological meaning or made with recycled material. Even the road to the village is very interesting with some works of art "exhibited" alongside. A visit to the museum will certainly please both adults and kids. Free entrance.

Visiting the museum was an unexpectedly pleasant surprise. As soon as we arrived, Mr. Papagiannis told us a few words about the history of the museum. We really appreciated it. The girl who showed us around was kind and answered everything we asked her. The curation of the space, its exhibits, but also the passion of those who take care of it is exemplary! Definitely worth a visit!

I visited the museum during my vacation in Tzoumerka and I was surprised to find out that a great artist exists with artwork that is unique and very refreshing in thought. The place is situated in an old school complex in the city of Elliniko and all the artifacts are sculpture basically around the modern Greek Political History! The place is rare

The museum was a pleasant surprise. Papagiannis'works of art are an unexpected mixture of traditional and modern elements, and testify to a strong connection with the region's history

Theodoros Papagianni , a well-known contemporary sculptor, comes from the village Elliniko. There he has converted part of his old primary school to a museum of contemporary art, which according to the artist “speak of our home, Epirus, and its history”. We visited the museum during a trip from Thessaloniki to the island of Lefkada and we found that it certainly worth the small detour. Apart of the museum itself we also appreciated the scenery along the road to the picturesque village of Elliniko. I believe that the artist made the most unique present to his fellow villagers and the visitors of the area. A last remark is that children also will be delighted by the exhibits.

The exhibition begins right outside the village, in the open air, and directs you to the old school where you can meet history told in a totally different and very interesting way.
Let the children wander around the exhibits and follow the helpful and girl who's in charge guide you.
The exhibition continues to the exit of the village, still in the open air.
A MUST!

Though I'm Greek, I would like to post this review in English, because the museum that Mr. (Dr.) Theodoros Papagiannis has created is one of the most nice modern art museums that we have in contemporary Greece. The museum, as well as the village and the road to it, point to a small secret jewel.
The artist using influences from the ancient Cycladic civilization, the African art as well as the modern art, combines recycled products, clay, wood, etc. to create unique compositions (statues).
His inspiration comes from the Epirot craftsmen, the shepherd, the farmer, the bread, the teacher and his students, the greek totem art.
Use your GPS and don't worry about the duration of the trip, because I promise you a 100% that it will compensate you.
Do call them before you start your trip, in order to find the museum open (+30) 26510 89220.

The renowned sculptor Theodoros Papayannis returns to his birthplace, the village Elliniko, and creates this museum that includes mainly sculptures inspired by his memories as a child growing up in the village. It's very important for the visitor to discover Papayannis's famous route of sculptures from the village's entry towards the Tsouka monastery, which is an extension of the museum to the village. The village itself has became a vast outdoors sculpture park unique in Greece.

Theodoros Papagiannis is a sculptor who's had a 50+-year career, but who's heard of him outside Greece? That's a shame, because his work is beautiful and fascinating. This small museum has an amazing range of his sculptures, from his subtly realistic clay busts, to high-concept pieces on mythology, life and death. This is a lovely small museum that he built in his childhood schoolhouse. Right outside – and on many roads in the village, all the way up to the monastery – are dozens of sculptures by other artists, as well as Papagiannis himself. Who would expect to find such a collection of contemporary art in a sleepy mountain village? Well worth the detour!

This is a gem, off the beaten track but really worth a stop. It could have easily been located in Manhattan or any other major city and center of culture. The museum is in the sculptor's old elementary school in his home town, out of loyalty and connection to his roots, and from a desire to bring to life a town which is dwindling as it's youngsters leave for the cities. Entrance fee is very low, and kids are free. It is steeped in values and emotion and one cannot but be moved by the exhibits and the stories they tell. A free guided tour is offered to all, and is well worth the time in order to deepen understanding and appreciation of the art which is beautiful, intricate, sometimes shocking but always fascinating.

The museum, unique in its kind as a cultural offer all over Greece, serves and functions as a space of consistent quality, a place that produces innovation and an area which allows the individual to reflect on the local and its relation to the global.
The special feature of the Papagiannis Museum is its variety of exhibits, both in its indoor and outdoor spaces, which are devoted to the basic elements of life, such as wheat and bread, and focusing on religion via the strong presence of holy bread. Other exhibits are a form of initiation into the agricultural value of the place, the biological existence of man and the use of food, elements intertwined with a wide range of human activities and simultaneously implying major cultural changes such as the dramatic adjustment of rural populations to urban type environments and urban lifestyles.
The museum is open and in favor of upgrading the public image of an isolated area that is shy of touristic developments. On a local level it creates a new reference for cultural capital, which not only captures the cultural elements of the region, but on numerous occasions discloses to the public a polysynthesis that defines the local and the emergence of a new type of consciousness. As a result, the museum gives the public the opportunity to reflect on the cultural tradition of the place, its collective memory, stirring up and preserving experiences of the past while simultaneously cultivating an ecological reflection which in turn highlights the need for the dissemination of milder forms of energy and environmental protection. Many of the outdoor sculptures, produced from recycled materials, make reference to the environmental problems and the necessity of recycling and the preservation of natural resources.
