on a recent trip to chicago we wanted to have a special afternoon with our nephew (8 yo). Without telling him what was in store we took the L to Daley park and his eyes lit up!!!
Starting with a competitive round of miniature golf his competitive juices were flowing. The three of us had a great time.
After the MG we decided to venture over to the rock wall knowing full well that the child would not miss a beat to showing us how much stronger and more agile he is than his aunt and uncle - but he was smiling for every second of it!
The staff was great and friendly and patient and the other visitors were fun to chat with while we were all enjoying resting on the ground while the children (hopefully) tired themselves out.
Our afternoon was capped off with a lunch at the snack bar. Not world class cuisine - but none of us went hungry and after a day of excitement it was a great way to come back down to earth!

The playground is very nice, it has something for all ages. My 10 and 13 year old boys had a fun break after a long walk to get to the park.
Across the street you can see the lake, qe rented bikes and rode around the lake. It was very misty that day but I imagine on a clear day could be very nice.
We went 2 separate times to do ice skating. One at 11 am and one in the last shift at 8 pm. The morning one was much better because at night the ice was very bumpy.
Some of the skates they rent are very bad and go imwards or outwards, making it impossible to skate
We changed them a few times and then had a lovely time skating and having hot chocolate afterwards.

We walked here with our 3 kids ages 8, 6, and 3 while we stayed in the city for a weekend. They loved it and did not want to leave. My 6 year old keeps asking when we can go back to this super cool park.
We went in early March on a Saturday morning and were lucky to have a nice day with sunshine and weather in the low-40s. This made it nice enough to play, but also not very crowded.

We showed up to skate and accidentally forgot one pair of skates in our hotel room out of 4 total. We were sent on a wild goose chase to get a pair of skates. Literally walked all the way to the front of the park and back. We finally found the right place and even though, we wasted an hour, they told us it would be $22 for my daughter to rent a pair of skates, even with the wrist band we already bought. It is just sad that they have no customer service. The property manager and GM just told us…”that’s the policy.” I would not recommend skating here. If you make any mistake, they will not help you. It isn’t their policy to do so.

Outlined in trees close to Lake Michigan stands a magical pirate ship type play structure, a crossing bridge, slides, and spiderweb swings. A skate ribbon surrounds the park. Rentals for skates and the climbing wall gear are near the entrance. A magical paradise where kids meet kids, families meet families and kids stay in motion. We also appreciated the cultural diversity of the area. Some seating is available for family members choosing to watch the activity. Pack a light lunch, favorite snacks, and water to fuel your family's active play. A family favorite after dance classes at Joffery Ballet.

Having been to Chicago many times, I'd say this is the #1 free place in the city to go with 5-12 year olds (with possible exception of Lincoln Park Zoo).
There are a number of free towers, slides, and other very creative places for kids to play; plenty of benches for adults to sit in, and some other options like a climbing wall and bunji jump if you want to spend a bit of $.
Easy to get to on public transportation or uber. Not a "hidden" gem but definitely a gem.

Fun and very busy. Most of the park is for 5-12 year olds. The little ones (2-3yr olds) can still have fun but need someone with them all the tine as there were quite a few tough big kids. Beautiful view of the lake, a rock wall and mini golf in the spring & summer. Open year round buy during the very cold of snow, the main slides and areas are closed.

It's a delightful skating ribbon, so absolutely go. When you get in line, check the zamboni schedule. Even better, buy your tickets in advance and pay the extra to skip the line. I say "in advance" because, as one of the attendants told me, the app is very hard to use.

We had a wonderful night of skating at the Maggie Daley Ice Ribbon. We were able to reserve our spots and skate rentals online.
The ice ribbon at night is holiday magic. You feel like you are in a Christmas movie. The beautiful lights in the trees and buildings set the scene. There was fun Christmas music playing. People of all ages and skating abilities were on the ice and it seemed all we’re having a wonderful time.

BE SURE TO BUY (for an extra $10) a penguin if your little child needs it. The attendant wouldn’t let us use one, none of the employees could help us. BUY IT WHEN YOU PAY FOR SKATES! The attendant was terrible!!!

We are planning a trip to Chicago the first week in April. Is this a good place to visit this time of year or are the activities too limited with the weather? Thanks in advance for the advice!
Written March 19, 2018
I think it is a great time to visit because it will not be super crowded. Just remember it is all outside so check the weather.

When does the ice skating rink open for the season?

We are heading to Chicago in a few weeks with our 5 yr old son. We plan on going to museum of science & industry and Maggie Daley park. Can anyone recommend anything else that would be fun for a 5 yr old. Are there any good boat rides for kids? Thanks!
Written May 18, 2017
Sea dog is cool. 5 year olds love candy. Try Dylan's on the magnificent mile. Museum of science and industry is the coolest museum on the planet in my opinion. Good choice. Field museum and aquarium are both very cool too. Enjoy your trip.

Sds

The slides look like they are metal...are they hot in the summer months? We are traveling in June.
Written February 25, 2016
Good advice about the sunscreen and water. However, June is just as likely to be cool than extremely hot. Parking is very expensive, but there is easy access through public transportation. Also, there are many other pleasant things to do nearby - which make the parking cost more "worth it." For example, bring the kids' swimsuits and splash in the "Face" fountain. Wonder through the Lurie Garden, which is wonderous and cool, like something out of Alice in Wonderland. Our ten-year-old absolutely loves the climbing wall.
