A volunteer from the Chicago Architecture Foundation gives a great education on the sites along the river. I have gone a # of times and, between the different points of view of each highly educated volunteer and the changing buildings, learn something new each time. Do it!!

This should be at the top of you to do list in Chicago. If it isn't, then put it there. If you want to listen to a read tour script then take one of the other architectural boat tours. But if you want the best, then, take this tour. This is one of the first things I recommend to out... More

This is the city to view present, past and future of the art of envisioned, designed and executed architectual gems. So much to see including beautifully preserved and historical buildings, art deco, modernist, futurist and catergories yet to be classified.

This is the best river and lake cruise for Chicago. The detailed explanation of the history and characteristics of each building is superb.

A lovely scenic ride aboard a comfortable sightseeing vessel takes you up the Chicago River, through the locks and out onto Lake Michigan. All the while knowing commentary highlights the architects, the stories, ups and downs of some of the most fabulous architecture in the world. Just long enough.

It is on the must do list for my visitors. And every couple of years I do it myself. It is a lovely way to see the City and to get a sense of the wonderful buildings in Chicago. As most visitors will walk around the Loop to see some of the magnificant public Art and Millenium Park, this a... More

See the city of Chicago from a boat tour on the Chicago River. The CAF has highly qualified docents that will provide interesting historical facts about the river and the buildings on the river. A fascinating, fun, informative tour. You'll see old and new waterfront homes and re-purposed buildings. Spectacular.

We booked the first ride in the morning. It was a cloudy morning and being on top of the boat was super cold even though it was June. I would sat cloudy mornings are better for taking pictures because of the lack of direct, blinding sunlight. Overall, the tour guide was super friendly. However, the tour was really long and... Took the tour at dusk. Great tour, interesting facts provided. Friendly tour guide and staff. Takes about an hour, gives you opportunities for amazing shots with great lighting. They sell snacks and booze on board.

Staying in Downtown / The Loop

Neighborhood Profile
Downtown / The Loop
Often visitors' first stop in Chicago, The Loop is a good starting point to sample the city's energy and flavor. This central business district boasts Michelin-rated restaurants, upscale hotels, premier shopping, and enough arresting architecture to keep your camera busy for hours. You won’t find too many photo galleries of downtown Chicago without a shot of Millennium Park and Cloud Gate (“The Bean”), one of the most iconic landmarks in the city.
