I was in town on business in January and wanted a route relatively free from wintry elements so I thought this would be a good way to have a local craft a route that would be scenic and safe. Marlin was not only a knowledgeable guide and had many interesting stories and facts, but ran the course the day before to make sure it wasn't too icy. I was a little time-bound and he made sure we ended on time. This running tour was the perfect blend of running talk, city/scenery facts and beautiful views. I've been on a number of running tours in several cities, and he had an added element I've not yet seen- he offers tickets to the Willis Tower or Art Institute in addition to the run. It was a very nice touch especially if you are in town for fun. If you're in Chicago I'd highly recommend a running tour with Marlin- and even if it's in wintry months, don't be intimidated. The route was very pretty in its winter glow.

Thank you for your kind review. So far for this winter season you ran the coldest tour. It was 15f when we started. You demonstrated that a running tour on a cold winter day is very doable, scenic, and fun. Thank you for spending this part of your Chicago visit with me. And best of luck on your upcoming marathon. Marlin

My husband and I did the 5K fun run this past Sunday with Evan as our guide. We loved it! We received it as a wedding gift (a creative fun gift idea for runners or anyone with some enjoyment of jogging/running and history/landmarks). Highly recommend! And you leave with lots of memorable photos taken by your guide!

I had such a great time doing the "Navy Pier and River Tour" with Marlin. My only regret was that I didn't have more time to do more tours with him. He was so pleasant and SO knowledgeable about what was interesting and cool and fun about Chicago. He brings the city and its history to life in memorable ways... and you get a decent run in, too! I cannot recommend Marlin and his tour highly enough... THIS experience is what you hope for when you come to a new city... and Marlin delivers it perfectly... JUST DO IT!

Thank you Ryan for your highly enthusiastic review. I'm so grateful you enjoyed your experience. I know I'll be showing you more of our great city during future visits. I'm looking forward to your return. Marlin

This is perhaps one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my life. It combined my love for exploring, running, and history. Marlin is an evocative and knowledgeable storyteller, and I’m not kidding when I say that this might have been the best holistic tour experience I’ve ever had. The best part is that in a running tour, there is time to tell full stories, unlike a boat/bus tour. You actually get to appreciate and be at the locations you’re learning about.

The context...

I was in Chicago for a business trip and had Friday morning open, so on Thursday night, I decided to call Marlin to find out if it “would be crazy to do the Half Marathon tour” the next morning. Lucky for me, this was one of the few weeks of the year he wasn’t fully booked.

I met up with him at the Bean the next morning, Marlin eagerly waiting my arrival in his bright Green Chicago Running Tours T-shirt and backpack. He was gracious enough to surprise me with water and snacks that he carried for me the entire way through (it’s extremely difficult to run with a backpack on).

One of the best parts about the tour is that he takes pictures of you all the way through. That’s great for the memories, and he also provided me with a digital copy of the stories he told me so I wouldn’t forget them. Forgetting is hard when you’ve got a storyteller like him though... It’s been nearly two weeks and I’m still telling my friends about all the cool things I learned. I definitely know way more about Chicago and it’s history than 100% of the people I know who grew up there.

There are four tours, all of which are smaller legs, but when combined, can add up to the half and full marathon. I can’t wait to go back to complete the other half!

Lastly... congratulations to Marlin on having just run his 90th marathon in Feb 2018. He’s a real gentleman, a true historian, and I couldn’t be more thankful for such an amazing experience.

Thank you for this incredible review Ashwin. You have stated and described so many aspects of your experience better than I could have if I wrote this myself. I feel humbled and grateful for your kind words. You noted the 3 key elements that I target on running tours. They are; "exploring, running, & history." As you personally experienced, there is no better way to gain the best of all than by way of a running tour. Thanks so much for calling me. It is not often I receive a request to run a 1/2 marathon the day before the request. I was just happy I could do it. Marlin

I did the navy pier running tour with Blake. The run was great, with plenty of stops along the way to gain a bit of knowledge and history about the city. Blake was really nice and enthusiastic, as well as knowledgable. The pace was comfortable. I had taken the architecture boat tour the day before but still learned quite a bit of new information. Plus, the buildings were a lot closer so it was a totally different perspective. Loved it!

This was my second running tour, I have done one in DC. This was by far the best one ever! I did the Grant Park 5k. It was scheduled to be a rainy day, but Marlin still said Let's Go! It ended up being a perfect morning for a run! He took us to many of the famous sights around the city and was very interesting and informative. He kept a nice pace and we stopped to learn about the city. He really is wonderful at his craft, he is passionate about the city, running and giving you the best experience! I really feel that he went above and beyond to make the tour exceptional!

Thank you so much for such a great review Lacey. We were prepared for the worst, but the weather gods found favor with us and held off. Grant Park is such a great place to run, see, and learn. I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it. Marlin

The Chicago River Navy Pier was my first ever running tour but I'm hooked. What a fabulous efficient way to see the city of Chicago on foot. Marlin provided excellent commentary and details about the history of the city as well as taking the evidence ie. action shots of me running. There are plenty of stops so people at all levels of fitness should be able to complete the course. I can't wait to do my next one tomorrow!

Thank you so much for your tripadvisor review Dominique. Thanks for noting that this is an "efficient" way to see the city. You get your exercise in while site seeing. It leaves you with a great sense of accomplishment at the start of your day. I'll see you later this morning for our "Chicago Tragic Events" route. Marlin

I can't recommend Marlin enough. He is knowledgeable about anything and everything in the windy city. He is your host, water carrier, photographer and all round information center on all things Chicago. After doing my first tour with Marlin, I signed up to do all 4 to complete the marathon distance during my time here. You won't regret it! Don't get on the tourist bus... use your feet and explore at your own pace. You will see things you wouldn't otherwise be exposed to. Marlin also used his art knowledge to give me a low down of the main 'must see's in the Chicago Art Institute. All in all a 10/10 experience! Thanks again!

Thank you for your great review Friska. With out a doubt you did Chicago the right way. You experienced the most visually stunning location while running on our "City in a Garden" route. Then you continued your tourist/fitness regimen for the remainder of your stay completing all 4 of our "Feature" routes. Congratulations on completing your first ever marathon! Marlin

I was planning a girls trip to Chicago and this was going to be the first time for all of us to visit the city. While planning our itinerary it literally took me months to convince them to sign up for a running tour. "Its a tour! We'll stop a lot! I'll ask him to run slow!" Finally I convinced them to do it, and we ended up planning it for our last day of the trip. The few days before I could see the apprehension in their faces (the weather was not looking favorable) but luckily the North Face store was just a block up from our hotel and I assured them that running in slightly cooler temps was 1000 times better then running in heat and humidity (haha!) And then the day arrived. Marlin met us at our hotel and then we were off and running. In my opinion it was perfect running weather. Overcast, with a slight drizzle at times. Even though we had already done some sightseeing before our tour Marlin took us to places we had not explored yet with great explanations of what we were seeing. I loved the fun pictures he took of us running (and with two of the girls being photographers, Marlins photos are still my favorite). Finally we ended at the Art Institute which I had actually not planned on and this ended up being a wonderful surprise and end to our run. Overall 10 stars and my reluctant colleagues agreed with me afterwards they had a great time and really enjoyed it also (despite our total distance being 7 instead of 5 miles because of the extra travel time from the hotel, but they're only slightly annoyed by that hehe).

I am so grateful for this review. You took the time to provide the best experience for your friends even with their apprehensions. I'm pleased all turned out well and they enjoyed the experience you set up. Thanks for the 10 stars and your kind words on the photos. You may forget many of the stories I tell, but those photos are forever. You know who to check in with the next time you visit Chicago. Marlin

We meet Marlin on the train while planning our itinerary for the day. He happened to have availability and gave us a wonderful tour of The Art Institute. He is an awesome storyteller and taught us so much in a short amount of time. Our group of four, aged 13 to 64, were all captivated by his tour.
He’s in the business of making friends and we all felt like we made a friend. Great tour, can’t wait for our next tour with Marlin.

It's not every day I sit behind folks, on the train, who are planning a visit to the city. I just could not help myself offering uninvited suggestions. Now I'm glad I did. We ended up having a fun experience at the Art Institute and I made new friends and had fun. Thank you for your review. I am grateful. Marlin
