Often visitors' first stop in Chicago, The Loop is a good starting point to sample the city's energy and flavor. This central business district boasts Michelin-rated restaurants, upscale hotels, premier shopping, and enough arresting architecture to keep your camera busy for hours. You won’t find too many photo galleries of downtown Chicago without a shot of Millennium Park and Cloud Gate (“The Bean”), one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. A stunning skyline coupled with cultural attractions like the Art Institute of Chicago present a Downtown where work and play peacefully coexist.

This listing is a merging of two institutions that have nothing to do with each other. The Chicago Theater -- which is the subject of the photo attached here -- is a commercial venue for comedy and music acts. Chicago Opera Theater (COT) is a small opera company that does about 3 productions a year at the Harris Theater, which is on the edge of Millennium Park. I think it would be fair to say that COT does chamber opera: smaller operas with scaled down production values, emerging singers, and smaller orchestras. They do it very well. COT does unusual works rather than the tired warhorses that the major opera houses do. The ticket prices are far lower than the big boys, and musically, the productions are always first-rate. I highly recommend COT for the serious opera fan.

The Lyric Opera, like many Chicago arts organizations, rarely scores anything but an A+ rating. It's not hard to see why performances are often sold out. The Lyric's Magic Flute was no exception. Utilizing the tradition of a show within show, the frame was a backyard party. The set was at Cape Cod style home where a performance was held for attendees on the patio. The pristine home set against a starlit sky made for a beautiful, if unusual backdrop. The story itself is a fairytale of lovers having to earn their desired partner by trials of honor. Inspired by Mozart's infatuation with Masonic principles, there is a a large dose of dogma included. That said, the singing by all was magnificent, especially the leads Tamina to Pamina, and Pappageno and the Queen of the Night (my favorite aria in the piece). The story was easy to follow thanks to the supertitles. It made for a delightful evening. (Next in my subscription is Eugene Onegin, then Carmen. I can't wait!)

If you do t have much time, you can always look at the building form the outside.

The sign is famously known and you won’t be disappointed looking at it at distance

My daughter and I recently attended a production of the Wizard of OZ here. The production was amazing and the theater itself is absolutely visual stunning. I cannot imagine how long it took to buildit. It was so so beautiful. Every seat in this place is perfect. The seats could use a bit more padding as sitting in them for 2+ hrs was not comfortable. The ushers were very helpful and professionals. I also found it odd that there was a lot of security at the door searching bags etc and then the gentleman sitting beside us was so drunk he could barely even walk. He was escorted out of the theater by his g/f because he was making a scene during the production.

The theatre is based within the loop area. It’s near to the river and the sign has featured on lots of tv and movies. It’s a great photo opportunity.

This theater is a wonderful relic in the middle of downtown. We went to a concert but I guess they offer tours of it during the day.

What a beautiful Opera theater...came here to see Jim Gaffigan and can't say there's a bad seat in the house. Nicely laid out and sound quality equally good. They did have two big screens up on each side, which was helpful to those in the back...but didn't feel it took away from the live, in person venue. Would come again...did take time to tour... just lovely!

This theater is at the heart of Chicago history. Such a classy place. Makes me wish I lived during the time when luxury was the standard that everyone strived for. Hopefully you'll get Richard for your tour guide. He has personal stories to share with you!
