Holy Name Cathedral, built in 1874, is one of the most prominent cathedrals in Chicago, not only because it is the seat of the Archdiocese, one of the largest Roman Catholic dioceses in the US, but also due to the architectural grandeur of the cathedral.

Visiting Holy Name Cathedral in the hype of the holiday season was breaking away from the chaotic hustle and bustle of the city, and finding myself in the peaceful serenity of the place of worship.

The cathedral, designed in the Gothic Revival style by the architect Patrick Keely et al, is beautiful. Everything from the tall, 210 ft spire, the west front rose window, the massive, bronze front door to the stunning, ornate interior, colorful stained glass windows, the beautiful nave, the chancel, the powerful columns, the aisles, the memorable and unique Resurrection Crucifix, the Stations of the Cross, the 70 ft high, stunning ceiling of the cathedral ... -- everything overpowers you with a sense of timelessness and eternal beauty.

The place of worship. The grand architectural creation.

Holy Name Cathedral is located in the city center. In fact, it is just a short walking distance from the Magnificent Mile.

The ceiling in this church is jaw dropping. The restoration of the cathedral inside an out is a triumph in simplicity. Gone are the heavy statuary associated with man Catholic Churches...instead serene symmetry . Tip If you attend an am mass on Sunday and they announce a short after mass tour...stay and hear all about the building's history. Well worth a visit if you are into church architecture. Cheers

Even if you’re not a religious person (I’m not), this building can be enjoyed. The ceiling is absolutely stunning! If you only go for that, it’s worth it, but the rest of the cathedral is also beautiful. It’s also impaired in that it’s right on a busy inner-city block, but you’d never know it once you’re inside.

Whenever we are in Chicago on a Sunday, we always attend the 10:30am mass. Feels like attending a mass in a church in Europe. Not sure what is going on with the protestors in front of the Cathedral, they have been there every time there is a mass. They don’t harass or bother anyone, but it’s a bit strange.

Visiting and praying inside. Even it did not turn on light, but I can see the big, tall architecture of the cathedral when we visited 3 days in Chicago, IL. It is 1-minute walk from Chicago subway station, and few block to the bus # 146 on N. Michigan Ave.

While my wife was shopping on the Magnificent Mile, I wandered west to see two important Cathedrals in Chicago. I was primarily looking for the St James Episcopal but only a block away was the Catholic cathedral, Holy Name Cathedral. I only got to see the exterior beautiful stone structure surrounded by high-rises.

We came to mass over memorial day weekend, on Saturday evening – – and happen to catch the end of a wedding!
It was gorgeous!!!!
The Cathedral is famous, and has historic architecture. It's simply amazing!

Here's a tip!!! Be sure to arrive early so that you can park conveniently, for FREE, across the street in the parking area for those attending mass. If you arrive early, it is a famous cathedral so several people will be taking photographs and you will fit right in.

Try to sit up near the front, so you can get a good view of the famous RED cardinal "hats" that hang from the ceiling, at the very front of the chapel.

Please press "yes" if you find this helpful, as I wonder if anyone actually reads these.....

Holy Name Cathedral was on one of the walking tours I went on. It is a beautiful downtown Cathedral rich in history and worth a quick stop. I read Al Capone's men gunned down a gangster here and the bullet hole is still visible.

What happened to this Cathedral?? It is so modern that it hurts, although it is beautiful still. My biggest irritation is that you cannot even tell where the tabernacle is, and when you find it, you are amazed by how hideous it is. It is an orb that's part of a bigger sculpture. I'm seen pictures before the renovation and it was much more beautiful.

It has the most gorgeous color stained windows and all the exquisite details all over the architecture. You have to get a peek inside.
