First of all I adore the Chopin Theatre - the decor seems random but just contributes to the intimate setting. I highly recommend attending this play. Dennis Watkins is marvelous as Houdini (love his other show Magic Parlour).

The Chopin Theatre comes highly regarded for the magic tricks. However, we saw the play "Death and Harry Houdini." The magic tricks were VERY good and this is what we were expecting; however, the play was just ok and detracted from the awesome magic.

Overall ok - the hour of close up magic was a disappointment because they went to every table around us but only had 1 close up encounter even though there were like 10 magicians

Chopin Theatre is to Chicago what the Actors Studio is to New York City. Although Chopin doesn't receive as much hoopla as Steppenwolf, it has made its own mark in the acting profession. Founded in 1990, Chopin Theatre has grown into one of America's most...More

This was our first trip to the Chopin. Upon arrival, the Staff was outstanding and very helpful. We found our seats. The venue is older, the seats need some work, BUT, the show was just fantastic. I have seen many Nutcrackers and this was one...More

I was looking for something different while my mother-in-law was in town, and Death and Harry Houdini fit the bit. I really liked the smaller theater (as compared to those downtown) and it definitely made it more intimate. There really wasn't a bad seat to...More

Very well put together and good balance of magic and storyline. The show does include some very good tricks and would be fun for the family.

Entire family had a great time at this play. My 10 year old loves history and my 8'year old loves magic, so it was an awesome combination. It's kind of dark but not overly scary if you you have kids. And the magic was first...More

I didn't know anything about the play before going, but I like up close magic and Houdini. The story of Houdini is interesting, and all of the actors are good, but the star is the actor who played Houdini. His magic tricks involved the audience...More

Do you like up-close magic in an intimate setting? Can you tolerate hokey over-acting masquerading as theatre? You may enjoy this show. The story is a loosely accurate summary of key aspects of Houdini's life with re-enactment of some magic tricks in front of a...More

We saw “Death and Harry Houdini” at The House Theater (Chopin theater?) in Wicker Park this past weekend. This is a small, artsy theater…fairly casual and intimate. The theater itself is Air Conditioned (awesome as it was like 90 degrees out) but the lobby didn’t...More
