- Brian W1 contributionEvanston Along the LakeTook the Evanston Along the Lake tour with our guide, Mitch today. It was a wonderful tour of an interesting and beautiful city lakefront. Mitch did a fabulous job. I especially enjoyed learning about the people who designed, built and lived in these beautiful, significant homes. Mitch was well versed in this history and brought these people to life through sharing details of their lives and accomplishments.Thank you for the fantastic review! A lot was packed into the two-hour walking tour. Mitch guided us efficiently through residential neighborhoods with opportunity for questions and comments. - Mark Rochefort3 contributionsThe Beauty and History of Lincoln ParkThe CAC Lincoln Park walking tour is fabulous. It is a two hour experience chock full of architecture, public statuary and fountains, history, a bit of the Lincoln Park Zoo and, of course, one of the most beautiful lakefront parks in the United States. CAC volunteer docent Dick Clark led the tour with enthusiasm and an impressive knowledge of every aspect of the subject matter. My wife and I wholeheartedly recommend this tour for CAC members and nonmembers alike.Thank you so much for the fantastic review! - Charlotte S50 contributionsThe "What's New" walking tourWe took the CAC's "What's New" walking tour of more recent buildings. It was a most informative overview that covered the history, context, and influences that went into about 10 of the more recent buildings. It was about a 1.5 mile walk with some stairs and took 1.5 hours. Highly recommended if you want to understand more about more recent architectural influences and structures in the city.Thank you for the wonderful review! She pointed out the various features of each period, and it was really neat to compare and contrast various buildings' characteristics. We touched on a good number of buildings, and the information was easy to understand and appreciate. I would consider other CAC tours the next time I visit Chicago.Thank you for the wonderful review! - Bryant73Morristown, New Jersey99 contributionsFantastic way to see Chicago’s treasures you’d otherwise walk byThe three tours I took, Art Deco, Hidden Treasures, and Magnificent Mile, were all terrific and included many interiors, such as the Walnut Room of the Intercontinental and the lobby of the Motor Club that I never would have seen on my own. Kudos to the three guides, Laurel, Teresa, and Jay (? I might be misremembering his name—apologies ), who were all knowledgeable and enthusiastic. A fantastic way to experience Paris on the Prairie on a sunny day and if I was in Chicago longer, I’d do more. My only minor gripe was the audio headset, which were often crackley and picked up the surrounding street noise as well as the guides’ voice, making it difficult to follow their commentary at times. But a small quibble.Wow! Thank you for the fantastic review! We're so happy that you got to enjoy so many tours with us. It really is a great way to explore the city. Our tour guide, John, was exceptional and did a terrific job pointing out all details and pertinent information. The tour is all walking, approx 1.5 miles over a 1 and 3/4 hour timeframe. It is an easy walk, climbing two small staircases involved, but very easy to maneuver.Thank you for the great review! Mary Jo Hoag was a very engaging tour guide revealing many of the secrets as well as practical information about traveling though the city's below ground pedestrian walkway. To the novice, this system can be intimidating, but Mary Jo made it much more approachable and interesting. I look forward to more adventures in this under-explored part of the city.

I never knew the Pedway existed, so this was fascinating to learn. The tour was well done, with many good anecdotes and pictures to supplement the facts. The aesthetics of walking underground in this public tunnel systems is a little oppressive, but I was very glad to be able to have this understanding of the complex system that is just below the street level. Hearing the history of older buildings is my personal favorite but it was also good to learn about recent changes in the city design and plans for the future.

This two hour tour of part of the Chicago Pedway system held surprises even for two native Chicagoans. Besides discovering the often unmarked access points to parts of the Pedway, we learned a lot about the buildings under which and through which the Pedways wends. Virginia, our guide, had a great sense of humor and had a lot of fun, obscure and often useful facts to share.

We had the river cruise at 2 pm and it was amazing! Originally we booked it for 3 pm but wanted to change it, luckily the ticket office staff was kind to change it, very helpful. And our docent, Kent, was very knowledgable about buildings and also the history of the city, and the river. I could feel that he was passionate about architecture, which made the experience better. This is the official architecture tour by Chicago Architecture Center, and I'd highly recommend anyone coming to Chicago to take this! I would happily do it again :)

I have lived in the Chicago area most of my life, away only during my time in the US Army during the VietNam war, and I did not know how extensive the pedway below the streets of Chicago are. We started at the Thompson Center, meeting in the food court, and walked underground all the way to the Aqua Building, east of Michigan Avenue. Our docent was very personable and informative. We had native Chicagoans in our group of 8, along with two from Miami and one woman from Switzerland. My wife and I really enjoyed the tour. After the tour we went to the Architectural Center and spent an hour or so looking at the exhibits there. They also have a great book store. The walk kept us out of the street traffic and the cold, since we went on the tour yesterday, February 25th.

Freezing cold day but our intrepid tour guide led us through the area pointing out interesting buildings & structures (focusing on architectural elements and brick work); street art and some favorite restaurants.
Tour guide was knowledgeable and kind. I have been in Chicago for a long time (40 years) and wasn’t as aware of the details and history of this neighborhood. Highly recommend!

We were visiting for business as a small group.
The receptionist was extremely racist against two females with us (Korean Americans) He automatically assumed they are foreigners and asked for their passport rather than IDs.
They were surprised and asked him why but he got frustrated all of a sudden and raised his voice while speaking slowly telling them he needs to see identification without explaining why. We realized he assumed, racist that he is, that they don’t speak english.
It was so embarrassing.
Then they asked him at the end which floor they should go so he said “can’t you read the ticket” rather than just telling them what floor.
He was super nice and giggly with other people. But with those two… wow…. Shameful.
Don’t know his name but his birthday was last Friday i believe as some people were wishing him happy birthday.

We're so sorry to hear that you had this experience. However, we do not think this happened at our establishment. We do not require passports or ID for our tours or admission (except for military or student discounts), our tickets do not direct customers to a floor, and nobody on our staff had a birthday recently. If you still feel as though this occurred at the Chicago Architecture Center, please either call us at 312.922.3432 or email socialmedia(at)architecture(dot)org with additional details. Thank you!

This tour really made Frank Lloyd Wright come to life for me today. Our guide, Dan, shared interesting stories and facts about FLW in addition to information on each of the homes we visited. I expected to learn about homes and architecture but what I got was an experiential immersion into the life of Frank Lloyd Wright as well. There were guests from outside the U.S. on our tour and our guide was so clear, engaging, and easy to understand for all of us. I've taken similar tours from other organizations in this same neighborhood and this one was the best by far. And to learn our tour guide was a volunteer was incredible -- his love for FLW and his attentiveness to our group was refreshing. Highly recommended!

We did their river cruise. Great views, informative talk by the volunteer docent (Ross) pointing out stylistic details, explaining construction methods, and throwing in historical details when relevant. He also answered our questions about the bridges before the cruise started, and told us where we could learn more about their function. We could hear him perfectly well, and the weather cooperated (it got chilly towards the end though, where buildings aren't blocking the wind as much). We recommend walking along the river to and from the boat, the riverwalk is really nice, if you don't like stairs look at the maps to find descents with ramps, but look out for construction down there (we had to go up streetside once to get around a place where they had blocked the path).

We took the river cruise on the First Lady and liked it so much that we decided to take a walking tour on another day. We selected Hotel Boom: Making Old New Again, offered only on Thursdays. Both tours were fabulous, as were the guides for both: they were extremely knowledgeable and very engaging with their approach to telling the history of the buildings in the context of Chicago's history. I highly recommend the Chicago Cultural Center and look forward to going on other tours the next time I visit Chicago!

The Chicago River cruise should be no problem. Cruises that go out to Lake Michigan would probably be a problem.

Do the tours show building interiors as well ?
Written June 24, 2021
Hi there!
Typically, our tours (other than the River Cruise) offer some interior spaces however, due to Covid restrictions we were not allowed to take guests into buildings for some time. As of right now, we’re in the process of working on regaining access to interior spaces, but we don’t have a timeline as to when we will be able to start offering tours with interiors once again.
Thank you!

Is this boat tour handicap/wheelchair accessible? My father is in a wheelchair and was told he would have to leave his wheelchair and walk up 15-20 stairs! Is this true?
Written July 11, 2018
On our Chicago Architecture Foundation tour, there was a boy in a motorized wheelchair. It is true that he had to stay on the main deck as there are only stairs up to the upper deck. But there are seats in the prow of the boat on the main deck. I do not think the restrooms are handicapped accessible, though, as there are bulkheads to get over.

Does this sell out or could I do a walk up on this Satursday morning (July 1)? Ticket master wants $24 in fees for $86 worth of tickets that is ridiculous, worse than a concert....
Written June 29, 2017
Hi Marty! You are welcome to purchase tickets in person at the boat dock, located on the southeast corner of the Michigan Avenue Bridge at Wacker Dr. Please note that summer is our busiest season, so it's possible that your preferred tour time will sell out. However, you may purchase tickets in advance at the dock, if you prefer. Thank you!
