Review of CityLit Theatre Rental
Zero to One star for theatre rental…We had a very negative experience renting CityLit theatre to produce our play. The marketing manager gave us necessary details but then she turned over all the day to day handling of our needs for putting on the show to the artistic director/manager of the theatre operations. He did not voluntarily share any information needed to arrange for rentals of costumes or furniture, as included in our contract. Nor did he give us needed information for lights and stage. The rehearsal rooms are a mess, with no instructions on how to run things. One of the rehearsal rooms is crowded with costume racks and the other room is crowded with rental furniture on shelves. In the theatre, the air conditioning was set for fan only and he refused to show us how to get cool air. We had to ask over and over again, and he reluctantly told us only part of what was needed. The theater itself is run down, with very bad wiring, few places to plug in equipment, broken seats all over, garbage not picked up, parts and lumber from previous shows all over the place. The elevator has no emergency call button. The door to the elevator on the first floor is stuck hard, and only opens with brute force. The place has many safety violations such as no lighting to get up the stairs to the control booth, so you can trip and fall on steps. The control booth is a mess with tons of old equipment lying around and interfering with operations of a show. The large number of extension chords needed in the theater are a fire hazard. The dressing room is two flights up, so actors have to come up and down stairs to change costumes, which is very dangerous, especially in heels. The stairs are not clean. The artistic director/manager even gets nasty and starts shouting at the renting customer when you have questions to fill in needed gaps. Instead of informing you about what is needed you have to keep asking, and he comes up with new rules for how to get rentals of furniture and costumes, and tells you the rules in a nastiest tone. It is not a pleasant experience. Don’t rent this theatre for your show.

If there’s a play happening at City Lit it’s well worth attending this intimate theatre in Edgewater. They produce several shows a year and it is always a treat to attend one of their productions. Currently running are two one acts: The Devil and Daniel Webster, followed by a Gilbert & Sullivan operetta titled “Trial By Jury.” Both are thought provoking and very entertaining. It’s a small theatre with open seating but every seat has a good view of the stage.

This is a great space for intimate local theater (in a church) can be a challenge for handicapped but is workable. They present a variety of plays which bridge a gamut of themes.
