Amazing small beach if you love peace and quiet. Waves are humming, cicadas are singing, goats are bleating, birds are singing, bees are buzzing. Not for thrill-seakers, bar hoppers or children. The beach is mostly sandy with many pebbles, but by the water it is mostly stones and pebbles which make getting to the sea a bit risky (you may easily trip). But you can manage even without water shoes in calm waters. When the wind blows from the sea, it's better to walk a bit towards the left where there's a bit of sand. There are three taverns by the beach, and at least in one (Thalami, the 2nd one) you can use the sunbeds for free if you order food from them. So it's a much better deal than in e.g. Falasarna, where this year (June 2024) they have been asking for 30 or even 50 euro per set!

Sfinari beach is a treasure. We didn't discover it until quite late in our two week holiday. It is practically deserted. There are three restaurants (Thalami is the best), beach showers, sun loungers, umbrellas and the restaurants are happy for you to use their toilets (we did purchase coffee and lunches to be fair). The beach is a mix of sand and pebbles. You can swim out and there is sand under the sea, but if you want to see all the fish swim nearer the rocks (at the sunset taverna end). It's the perfect antidote to Elafonisi which can be a bit rammed. I would highly recommend it.

Empty beach which was extremely peaceful with two great restaurants a stones throw away. Make sure you bring your sea shoes as this is a pebble beach.

A remote pebbled beach and partly sandy, 20 km from Kissamos. Unique for those seeking tranquility.
Few umbrellas, showers, café bars and fish taverns in the area. It is open sea, not protected by winds!
Camping is NOT prohibited and a couple of restaurants in the area provide the basic facilities.
If you drive on the asphalt road towards the main beach and turn left at the T intersection, you will come to a secluded beach where the water is calm at all times.
Tip: If you ascend the mountain on the south end of the beach, crossing the rocky Cape of Korakas full with carob trees, you'll soon see the secluded beach of Platanakia on the other side of the mount. By careful descent, you can reach the beach and enjoy your bath.
There are buses running to Sfinari from Chania bus station, thus it is no problem if you don't have a car, although a car is generally required for exploring Crete. If you choose to drive from Chania, follow the new National road (E75) to the west, towards Kissamos.
When you reach Kasteli in Kissamos, take the provincial road Kasteliou-Platanou and follow the signs leading to Sfinari.

Nice and quiet beach, found below this typical Cretan village.
For stone beach lovers, sunbeds are available for free in front of the three main restaurant and you’re invited to follow this not-written rule: it’s polite to have lunch in the restaurant which is offering the sunbeds.
We loved it also because there’s a lot of shadow, so I totally suggest if you have children or if you like to take a nap after lunch. Free parking at the shadow is available as well.
In the end of August/beginning of July we found a lot of poseidonia, which for us is not an issue.

This is a remote but accessible beach on the Western coast of Crete, which even on an August weekend only had a handful of visitors. It's 8 kilometres beyond Falassarna (nice, but more commercial) along the spectacular winding coastal road west of Kissamos. There is an excellent choice of fish tavernas, the owners put out sunbeds and shade free of charge, and there are showers. It's a mixture of sand and pebbles, with sand underwater, and the water quality is fabulous - the further out you go, the clearer it gets. Good for snorkeling, and the shore gets quite big breakers (no lifeguard). In case it matters to you, people keep their costumes on.

We popped along to Sfinari to have a bite to eat and watch the sunset after a day on Falasarna beach. The Sunset taverna was friendly and served delicious fish and seafood. They also offered as extra house specialities -- bruschetta-type nibbles with yummy dips and a huge plate of home-made doughnuts and ice cream on the house at the end with home-made lemon liqueur. So bear that in mind when you're ordering as we felt so stuffed! Delicious though and such a lovely, simple and unpretentious setting to wind up a day on the beach. Highly recommended!

This is a long, pebbly beach with some great tavernas at the far end and is well worth a visit. It is quiet, though the beach shelves quite quickly and the waves can be quite strong (which can be great fun is you are a good swimmer). There is some good snorkelling too.

Any other, close by ,peaceful beach like the one in Sfinari?
Written July 30, 2017
Hi. Not really, nothing with all the facilities provision. There are few small ones near Chania. The one worth mentioning is the pebbled beach in Paleochora but it is an hour drive from Kissamos.

Hi, I am staying in Kissamos in the Summer and have been reading the revires on Sfinari Beach and there restaurants, we do not plan on car hire so wondered if we are able to walk to Sfinari Beach from Kissamos town centre. Thank you
Written January 4, 2015
Absolutely not a walking distance. If no car hire is planned than motorbike scooter have to be rented in order to get there.
