Our trip with Sawtooth Mountain Guides into the ‘Tooths was nothing short of spectacular. We didn’t want to do the regular 4-day back-country backpacking trip (which generally follows the trails). Instead, we wanted solitude and the opportunity to do some rock scrambling and take in the sights from the top of ridges and passes. Our guide Amy designed exactly what we wanted. Her planning and her adaptations on the spot made for a perfect trip. Our porter Jackson was also a great companion and "shlepper" but he was also very knowledgeable and added a lot to our hike. Amy also really embraced our dietary needs. We are pescatarians, with additional carbohydrate restrictions. We know that special ingredients were purchased for us and then Amy thought up some terrific culinary ideas, even pizza from chickpea flour! We really appreciated all the thoughtfulness that went into the menu. All in all, top ratings for SMG!

I recently took the Intro to Multi-pitch Trad Climbing course at City of Rocks, and was very impressed by the quality of the course. I'd been climbing single-pitch sport routes outdoors for a couple of years, but making the transition to multi-pitch or trad climbing without a mentor seemed daunting. This course gave me exactly the knowledge and confidence that I needed to make that leap. To call our instructors (Drew and Brad) climbing experts would be an understatement, and the instruction was obviously well-practiced. The course exercises were very well-designed--I'll describe two in particular: I did two mock-leads with trad gear while an instructor ascended alongside me, giving one-on-one advice on gear placement, safety tips, and mindset. This really helped me bridge the gap between knowing how to place gear and knowing how to lead a trad climb. Later, while learning multi-pitch techniques, we set up multiple anchors along a wall and then practiced with a partner traversing between the anchors as though on an actual multi-pitch route, fully tied in and belaying each other the whole way. By the fourth or fifth anchor station, I felt comfortable enough with the process that I was ready to try it out up on the wall. If you're looking to make the leap to multi-pitch or trad climbing, I don't think there's a better way to do so than by taking this course.

We had a great 1/2 day of rock climbing near Sun Valley. Our guides were so professional and fun. They put up four lines for our family of five and taught us how to tie the knots and guide each other as well. Can't wait to go back some day!

We had an amazing adventure / trip with Sawtooth Mountain guides. The staff was incredibly responsive, polite and professional before the trip. The actual trip was incredible! Everett was so knowledgeable, fun and conscientious of how we were feeling throughout the trip. Safety was the number one priority and he taught us a bunch about the snow pack and conditions . Everett is the BEST!!! We will definitely be back and requesting Everett although I’m sure all the guides are awesome. 5 stars for this awesome company- if you are considering taking a trip- DO IT!

I have been traveling the West all winter skiing (PNW, Tetons, Wasatch...) I have never been to the Sawtooths, but have always wanted. I booked two days of Ski Touring with SMG. I was super impressed with their entire operation. I had concerns about being backcountry given this years difficult snowpack but SMG was impressive with their systems approach for risk mitigation in the backcountry. My guide Everett was terrific...lots of awesome experience, super knowledgable of the zone we were touring, and was good at finding awesome snow in our spring time weather. I highly recommend skiing in the sawtooths (great terrain, less people -- like empty trailheads midweek, beautiful) and booking with SMG. You will be impressed as well...for that I am fairly certain :).
