My boyfriend and I had a private safari in Serengeti with Burigi Chato, and I would NOT do it again. 5* ratings here and on google were very convincing, but unfortunately this company overpromises and underdelivers. I would also recommend checking the most recent reviews thoroughly and not take them for face value.

I was very clear on what we wanted to see - the great migration. The radio was broken and the driver couldn't communicate with other guides to spot animals in time. We missed the great migration, and even though we understand this couldn't be guaranteed, it's painfully obvious that the guide was simply not prepared.
Looking back, the problem was easily avoidable - all he needed to do was checking with local rangers for the Northern part whether we could cross the river or not. Instead, we spent good 6 hours getting there, and trying different crossings. The guide was NOT happy at all that we kept insisting on trying other alternatives. Another way to avoid it was changing a plan and going for one night in Northern Serengeti - with a better shot at river crossing. This is something ALL other professionals recommended, when we shared our experience on our return. Whenever we mentioned that we didn't see the great migration in July - people would laugh at us (with friendliness and compassion) saying "how on earth have you missed what was right in front of you?!"

On another day, the guide seemed to be taking us on his own errands around the park. Namely, he went all the way to the Western gate, visited an airstrip, then local authorities - and it was NOT for any of our purposes whatsoever. Basically the whole day was wasted because he drove in direction opposite from any chance of spotting wildlife.

Cooking was tasteless. They never asked what we wanted for breakfast or dinner. Not that we are picky at all, but asking whether we want pancakes or omelette for breakfast would be easy enough - that's what all other cooks were doing. We saw how other guides and cooks interacted with their clients - and we just wished Burigi Chato they weren't our guides.

It wasn't all that bad - we've learned a lot of information about wildlife, saw plenty of animals, and tried to shelve our disappointment for the duration of the trip.

I also asked other guides, tour companies, and lodges in and around Arusha about Burigi Chato Safaris - no one seemed to know them. This conversation ahppened on at least five different occasions with completely unrelated people and businesses who work with safaris genuinely a lot.

That whole experience so disappointing that I had to ask for a refund. I had two long meetings with Geoffrey after the fact, explaining all our frustration. All he came up with (after those meetings and a very long email exchange that lasted for about two weeks after that safari) was for us to book another £5,500 worth of tours with him to offset the money wasted on this trip. Naturally, I didn't accept that option and asked for a refund (we payed with credit card). Needless to say, they stopped all communication immediately.

I had to follow up with my bank to get my money back. One lesson I've learned from that experience - double-check reviews on tripadvisor and google for their authenticity.
