Enjoyed a mid afternoon mini hike along the main loop trail. People around, but not over crowded. Rocky, gravelly path with lots of ups and downs and plenty of picturesque views through the pines across the lake meant it was more of a trail hike than a walk.

This easy to moderate trail is a must-do while in CDA. There are beautiful, panoramic views of the lake for 75% of the hike with plenty of places to stop and admire the views or even get in the water. While we didn’t do it, you can jump off of “cliffs” of varying heights up to 15 feet above the water. Great for kids and dogs. There are parts you have to scramble on rocks so might not be great for elderly.

Tubbs Hill is a trail located along side the lake just steps from downtown in Coeur d’Alene. Trail shoes are recommended as there are areas where you will be going over irregular rocks and loose rocks. It is easy-moderate depending upon whether or not you go to the summit. Footing may be a little tricky if you are not wearing hiking shoes. Views of town and of the lake are exceptional and there are several opportunities for photographs. There is also an area with access to a beach. Take water with you because once you leave the park, there is none. Restrooms are available in the park near the entrance to the trail.

First time hiking here and we were on a bit of a time schedule - we took the main loop around the lake. Even tho' the temps were in the hi 30's when we started, the sun eventually came out; and the views are spectacular. Next time we'll take the summit trail. Highly recommend for an easy to moderate hike with spectacular views.

Due to its proximity to the resort and downtown, Tubbs Hill is very busy. There are many that use the trails to get to locations they can jump in the lake. I felt the trails could have used some more markings to know when you were on the trail. Because it is so heavily used, there are trails leading everywhere so it's easy to get turned around.
It does provide some wonderful, picturesque spots along the way. Would be wonderful to see the sunset from these locations. Overall, it is a fairly easy hike and know that you won't be alone on the trails.

This is only about a 2 mile hike around the perimeter, but if you’re not accustomed to the altitude it will offer enough of a mild workout, particularly if you take one of the trails to the summit. This is a very close to town hike that shouldn’t be missed. We extended our distance to about 3 1/2 miles by doing so and wish we’d taken out trekking poles for the climb. The scenery is very nice, and we recommend parking and starting at the less busy east side park.

Beautiful scenes along Coeur D Alene lake. We just walked along the outside of the trails (the main trail) but there was a summit trail as well. A nice beach spot if one was interested in swimming. Definitely not secluded, plenty of other hikers. Glad we made the trek!

During our 5 day stay in CDA, we visited this hill twice taking in several different trails. There are beautiful views along the way. Most trails are easy, while the one to the summit is a bit uphill yet still doable for all ages.

August is hot and dry here so go early. We went too late. Hiked from 10-12:30. Bring a suit and a towel so you can jump in or sit in the water. This was the highlight of our trip. We just needed to start the day earlier is all. Great hike. Open space. So much to see.

Very easy hike around the hill. Views are phenomenal. 2 mile loop that’s well marked. Early morning is nice because there aren’t many people out. There’s a few places for cliff jumping as well.

My 3 year old is coming along with me. Is this trail
safe for kids? Does is go through cliffs/any steep falling hazards
Written July 7, 2023
It was a bit challenging for my 82 year old husband and we turned back. It is about a 2 mile loop. I saw lots of kids though some were a bit older.

Yes, there is a nice sized parking lot next to the east entrance. The west entrance is next to the park and a city paid parking lot. You could park on the west side in the library and city office parking lot but you'd have to walk west across the park to get to the west entrance. And that parking is only 2 hours allowed.

Yes, but with caution for one spot. There is a short length of trail near the beginning of the lower, main trail (on the resort side) that's essentially large rock surfaces that are cliff side. A slip here if it's icy or slick would be very dangerous. Also be careful here if you are walking dogs that pull on their leash. But this is really the only one spot I worry about when it's wet/icy/slick, so I just tread very carefully here for a few hundred feet & then back to normal trail.

I have a bad knee and can't go down hill for very long, is this trail fairly level?
Written June 22, 2017
No! The trail is very narrow in places and it is not paved at all. It is mostly an uphill grade & then back down again.
If you want to take an awesome walk on level, paved trails try the bike trail (Trail of the Coeur d' Alenes) that goes between Mullan and Plummer. The section I would suggest is to get on in Harrison. Plenty of free parking down by the dock. Head out on the trail to the south, to your right if you are facing the trail with the lake behind you. Easy, level walking & gorgeous lake views all the way. You will not be disappointed and you can have lunch in cute little Harrison!

Tubbs Hill is not wheelchair friendly, unfortunately it is a dirt trail that is narrow with many stumps, rocks, and unevenness.

I am trying to plan a fun hike for a family reunion with people of varying ages. If we stayed on the main trail could young children, an older couple, and a man with a prosthetic leg do this hike? I am looking for something that doesn't have to many steep inclines/declines that would be fun.

I am 74 and very active. I have taken many people on this trail. There are some rocks, but if a person takes there time, it is a very nice trail as it is used so much. You can access it from either end and like someone else mentioned, you can turn back and end up in our beautiful park.
