The Idaho State Capitol reminds me very much of my own State Capitol in Madison, WI with one major distinction. The city of Boise has allowed horrible over-the-street stop & go lights to block the amazing view of the Capitol with the mountains in the background. (See picture attached.). I would go so far as to say that for city beautification, they should rethink that system!
But - really nice neighborhood. Walking distance to a really great downtown area of shops, hotels & restaurants.

My son and I on a Saturday afternoon. Parking is on the street and typically costs a few bucks for 2 hours, but it was free this time.
It is a bit of a walk to the building, and getting inside does entail some stairs. There probably is an easier method for a disabled visitor, but I didn't take note.
Inside the building is immaculate and beautiful with a historical feel. You are able to walk right past some of the legislators' offices and even into both the house and senate chambers anterooms. They were not open today, but most had glass doors. We went up the marble stairs to the top floor, where there were some displays and a great view out to the Railroad Depot.
I would like to come back and take a tour sometime for sure.
Highly recommend.

We were staying at the Hampton Inn in Downtown Boise and took a stroll early in the morning around 7:30 am to check out a few sites. It was a Wednesday morning and not very many people around. In the morning light, the Capitol Building makes for a nice photo.

You can walk in but there isn't much to see. The interior center is blocked off, work is being done on the dome. The building is mostly white stone and plaster with no artwork. Most impressive from the outside, not so much on the interior.

Unlike others, we did not have time to tour the building but we did want to go visit and take pictures. The building is beautiful and morning/evening lights make for stunning pictures. It is very easy to get a great view from several streets.

This Capitol is a real monumental building with countless marble columns. The high courtyard with the view high up to the dome is impressive. It's nice that visitors are allowed to walk through the building independently without great restrictions.

Ring the "Liberty" bell in front or walk around. Absolutely beautiful building inside. SE walkway makes an absolutely gorgeous setting to take a sunset pic amongst the roses and lavender

We visit lots of state capitols. Idaho's was great to see. It's large and accessible - the bottom floor has a good deal of historical displays and educational material. Interesting wooden statue of George Washington on the top floor. I was disappointed the you couldn't really see inside the House or Senate chamber - like not even close enough to peek through the windows. I found that unusual.

We were able to find free parking (3 hours for visitors) just a block to the east of the building so not much of a walk. The building is quite grand with a replica of the Liberty Bell on the front steps. Inside, everything was shiny marble but nothing (senate or house rooms) was open to be viewed like I have seen at other state Capitol buildings.

Wow! This place is interesting! Who knew??? Or at least, I didn’t! My esteemed spouse and I took a small tour there and look forward to going back... there was just so much to see. Between the business of the government, the beautiful architecture, the informative displays and artwork this place is worth a gander! Head there for a fun afternoon!

If you are going a self-guided tour, about how much time would you say it take to get the full experience?

In all honesty, with two hours we had lunch and walked around and saw quite a bit of downtown. I recommend Fork for a bite. Great place. I would say 2.5-3hours is more than enough! Safe Travels!

can I bring my toy dog into the building?

Hello,
If the dog is a service animal, it is welcome in the building. For all other animals, we request they do stay outside.
Thank you for your question.

I really don't know since I don't have pets. I'm sure you could call and ask, or see if there's a web site.
