This was a very interesting historical tour. You are able to have a guide or just follow path with posted information. The most memorable was seeing the gallows, the witness room, and the “drop” room! Also, there are multiple pictures of inmates with their backstories. The youngest inmate was only 11 years old. Worth seeing.

    Interesting
We enjoyed our tour with our tour guide. The grounds were very well kept, and all plants were well manicured. There is a lot of reading throughout, and it would have been nice to have more interactive displays. I think for younger children it would be boring.

    Don't Miss!
This was my favorite stop of the five days I've been in Boise while my husband was in a training. I took the 1 hr guided tour, an additional $2.00 (I got a combo ticket with the botanical gardens and the guide talked for 90 min. I spent 3 hours total at the penitentiary. It also has a very interesting weapons museum.

Do the crime do the crime
Great place to visit and see the history of Idaho. It puts a lot into perspective of the prison living conditions back then compared to now. Definatly would go back next time in visiting.

Some Eerie Places Within The Penitentiary
Not sure what drew us to this place but glad we came. We were in between times for a guided tour so we just did the self guided tour. I felt like we learned so much from the information boards posted everywhere. We didn’t read everything and we didn’t spend much time in the weapons part either. Somehow, we did spend almost two hours here. The grounds were beautiful with rose plants and the old buildings make you appreciate your comforts at home. Many stories and some very eerie places within the penitentiary that you have access to. Definitely recommend if you have not been. You are on your feet the entire time, so comfy shoes would be recommended. There are places you can climb the metal stairs, but not necessary to do so.

Interesting Place to spend a couple hours.
Fascinating. Took the 1 hour guided tour which hit the main areas. Guide told about history of the place and added interesting stories about some of the prisoners. After the tour we spent more time wandering the grounds ending in the weapons museum…which was worth seeing.

    Penitentiary Full of History
The Old Pen is showing it's age, but full of history. The place has deteriorated quite a bit, but you definitely get a feel of how prisoners lived. The story boards were the best part of the. tour. Understanding that teenagers were sent to a penitentiary with grown men back in the late 1800's must have been something. The cells with 2- 4 men in them were quite small. The disciplinary cell of 4x4x4 is no bigger than a dog house. These were some tough prisoners.

    Roses
Definitely seen better days. Some spots under renovation. Story boards in most of the building with inmate stories. Time line displayed in another building. So many beautiful rose bushes. Fascinating old machines in the laundry. Private collection of weapons on display.

A spooky, historical, and thoroughly enjoyable hour spent!
Paid our $6 apiece and got a map from the knowledgeable docent at the front desk. Did a self-guided tour of all the grounds and buildings that were open to the public (some are under renovation and not available to explore). Interesting details of the most infamous inmates are told on black and white storyboards. Exhibits of actual weapons made by prisoners, their cells, and the guard stations. Toured the execution by hanging room and the drop room below. Gray, rainy day reflected the depressing atmosphere the prison must have exuded while it was an active penitentiary. Definitely worth the entry price.

A bit of history … nice grounds …
Worth visiting. Well maintained bit of prison history. Cell block, laundry, and woman’s area most interesting in my opinion. Lots of flowers. Lots of inmate stories. Limited access to inside of most structures.

Best $6 I spent on my trip! The architecture is beautiful. The roses were still blooming. All the staff were very pleasant and informative, though the tour is self guided at this time due to COVID. There happened to be a large art exhibit on one of the buildings that was quite interesting and an unexpected treat. A good way to spend 90-120 minutes.

The Idaho Penitentiary was amazing! There is so much to learn and see! Very educational. The old prison was used for almost 100 years and much of the old structures are still there. There are still the 'gallows' where prisoners were actually hung. There is a very small women's ward. Lots and lots of educational displays, explaining the history and what took place there. There are lots of personal stories as well. It's actually scary to be inside some of the buildings imaging how terrible it must be to be incarcerated. A good reminder to be a good person!! Nearby are hikes and the Botanical gardens and a beautiful home (the Bishop's house) that was moved there several years ago. There is free parking. The day we went it was very hot and the parking wasn't very shady. There is a minimal cost to go into the penitentiary, but I highly recommend it! You can walk around the Bishop's house and take pictures. It's very beautiful.

Well worth a couple hours of your time. Pay the extra $2 for the guided tour. It is a very interesting, beautiful, yet sad place. Our guide (I wish I could remember his name) was very informative and had some very interesting stories about the prison. Seeing the execution room and “Siberia” was a strange feeling. The weapons exhibit was very cool. Our 13 year old enjoyed the whole visit, the 10 year old got hot and tired about half way through.

This site was very interesting and worth the time and drive to visit. Very well preserved with great signage and many stories of the men and women who were incarcerated here up until the early 70s. Off season hours are different than summer. The site said they opened at 10 but in fact off season is noon.

Very family friendly! Cheap, and fun family outing. Great descriptions along the way. Amazing historical site. Took my 4 year old and she really enjoyed it. I was able to give her age appropriate explanations and she found it fascinating. It's very cold inside the buildings - makes it great for a hot summer day, but bring a jacket in spring!

I had recently visited the former penitentiary in Philadelphia, and I was pleasantly impressed that Boise’s penitentiary was not a carbon copy experience; they complemented each other. Standing in the former cells was sobering: 2 people in a cell 24/7. Only one person could stand at a time; most of the day had to be spent in bed! Interesting how the inmates made toilet seats to give them a place to sit without crouching on a lower bunk or laying down. The staff were great and circulated. Be sure to see everything. I thought I had seen ‘Siberia’ (see other entries) but I had not ventured far enough behind the ‘cooler.’ I am glad I retraced my steps. The gift shop has additional information and posters. The prisoner personal histories are riveting. Many historically and socially relevant displays. There is an aspect of this restricted, unfamiliar lifestyle that will intrigue everyone: young or old, male or female.

This old penitentiary is well preserved. The exhibits give you an excellent idea of what life was like for the prisoners. There is also a weapons museum here that has a wide variety of weapons from around the world. I paid the senior admission rate of $4 & it was well worth it.

A lot more than just a historical prison. The Idaho transportation museum is there with lots of old wagons and other vehicles. The prison contains a huge display of firearms from different eras and wars. The State Geological Society museum is also located in the old prison. Excellent use of an old prison facility for many different facets of Idaho history. And don't forget the Botanical Gardens next door.

This experience was great! The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that Covid did not allow us to have guided tours throughout the location.
Driving up to the penitentiary was immediately emotionally intimidating. The giant stone walls, guard towers and bars on the windows laid a foundation for haunting experience. While on the on the subject of haunted, it was rumored to be so. Alas I did not see or hear anything suspicious.
The staff were lovely, very helpful and knowledgeable. The grounds were very well kept and the rose garden was beautiful!
Highly recommended
