We camped at Ft. Yargo State Park, July 24-27, 2023 – Campground 2

This was our second RV camping trip to Ft. Yargo this year. The first trip was in February and we stayed in Campground 1. We didn’t have any complaints during our first trip and therefore decided to return in the summer with three of our grandchildren. We experienced lots of problems that if I’d known about, I would have gone to a different park.

Campsite water faucet – We always turn on the campsite water and make sure it’s running clear before connecting it to our RV. After we turned the water on at our campsite, it wouldn’t go off. Finally, we got it to slow down enough to hook up our hose and supply the RV with water. Water continued to shoot out of the faucet handle, so we called it in. Staff came and said they would fix it the next day. They did fix it but it was a few days, so the backside of the campsite was wet and water was wasted.

Campground 2 Bathhouse - We had 2 adults and three young grandchildren in our camper. Therefore, we had planned to shower at the bathhouse to keep from overflowing our grey water tank (Ft. Yargo does not have sewer hookups at the campsites). When we went to the bathhouse there were signs that both the Men’s and the Men’s Family bathrooms were closed. There was a sign to use the facilities at Campground 1. The Women’s Family bathroom had no water in the sink or shower only cold water. The Women’s bathroom did have hot and cold water at the sink but only cold water in the shower. There were no signs at the women’s bathrooms letting us know in advance there was no hot water in the showers. We drove over to Campground 1 and used the Family showers there.

Putt Putt Golf Course – We paid $5 per person at the Welcome Center to play putt putt. We should have driven over to the course first. It was incredibly run down. The grass had not been cut in quite a while. They should let us check out the putt putt clubs, and golf balls then play for free. What were we paying for?

Beach – I checked the Ft. Yargo website multiple times looking for photos of the beach. Lake swimming is new to our grandkids, and I wanted to see if they would be safe. The beach had a barrier to keep swimmers from going too far out into the lake. There were lots of picnic tables in the shade. The beach didn’t have much sand and was muddy in some places. The Men’s bathroom was disgusting with overflowing toilets (we were there on a Tuesday).

We also went fishing from the pier, took a hike, used the campsite firepit, played on the campground playground, walked on the Welcome Center walkway over the marsh and used the Campground 2 dump station - we had no issues with these activities.

Went fishing on it’s small lake on Thursday with my son. Never could see anything alive in the lake due to poor clarity. Lots of pollen & other stuff in lake made it look a little gruesome. We caught a fairly good size catfish (18”) in the lake but that was it. Moderate activity around the lake with plenty of campers, beach goers and other tourists hiking. It is a small but beautiful park just that the lake could use a clean-up sometime soon.

We went Monday, 7/17. Waiting until after lunch so that the park would be cleaned up from the weekend, however, this was pointless. Bathrooms near beach, disgusting, health department should check this out once in a while. (Photos are self explanatory). Hornets, big ones, everywhere on beach, probably due to the fact all the trash cans are over flowing. People smoking pot on the beach. Stayed about 30 minutes due to the fact I’m not going to hang out in filth especially with my 4 grandkids,
Told rangers about bathrooms and they said, you could have just came up to the gift shop and use those restrooms, like it was My problem and it is what it is. It’s not like you can just walk up to another restroom, you gotta pack up and drive, unless of course you trust all the strangers around you not to take your stuff. It was really I just gross. Love the gift shop they built though it looks nice and clean. Should put more effort in to the rest of the park. Would not go back, ever. This is an embarrassment to Winder. You gotta do better.

There is some construction going on near the visitor center. Looks like they are building some cabins. This park has a lot of mountain bike trails. There is also a connecting trail to Winder. There is actually a small old fort. There is a walking trail along the lake and a longer recreation trail. There is a nice picnic area. Very clean.,
The reservoir has a swimming beach and boat ramp. There are campsites.

We stayed two nights and it wasn’t enough! When we come back next tome we will stay a minimum of three nights so we can go and do more. The new park entrance is gorgeous, as it truly sets the ton for what’s to come. The fishing was fantastic and the water was nice and cool. We can’t wait to come back next time!!

We hiked 7 mile trail this morning. It was a fairly easy trail around the lake. Unfortunately had to share it with bikers. Our dog did not appreciate that. The log fort was a surprise. This is not how I pictured it. Quite small.

We stayed here for two nights. Gorgeous park. There was a lake/river. Our site had a view of it. When we return, we’ll try to get a site on the river. They have cabins which look like new apartments. Plenty of hiking trails. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating.

We stayed in a Yurt (like a circular tent with wooden floors, skylight, and cabin style furniture) and it was AMAZING! Yurt number 2 is right on the lake - you sit on your deck and the lake is right there, sun blazing on the water - it's so special. My 2 year old fed the fish right off our deck! (We have stayed in an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora (Tahiti) and this is as close as we'll get to that again without travelling far!!). I was blown away at how lovely this place was! It sleeps 4 comfortably and has electricity - we took the crock pot to make some meals. There is a fire pit outside for smores and a grill (but the grill was really black!) and your own table and benches to eat at - with a view to the lake. I wish there had been a fridge - we kept everything fresh in a cooler! (There are stores close by the Park to get supplies).

We did a 7 mile hike around the lake and it was beautiful - we stopped at the beach for a couple of hours - just perfect! There's a Fort to visit (although it's more like a house!) and animals and nature spotting abound! a fantastic place for a weekend or even a week!

In my opinion Yurt number 2 has the best location as you can see straight across the lake with an unobstructed view - number 1 would be fine too - just not as full a view - and number 3 has a nice outside eating area. Yurt 4 and 5 don;t have a great view - although on the water they overlook the campers on the other side of the lake (which is very narrow at this point ) - so not much privacy.

There are canoes under the Yurt which are fun to rent for $6 for the weekend - they are difficult to get out as they are heavy - but so much fun when on the water!

I would highly recommend staying in a Yurt - and we'll be back!

We camped at Fort Yargo In winder in August with our 9 grandchildren we got there on Thursday and Left on Sunday. They waited til Saturday nite to tell us we had to many kids on one site,so we had to purchase another site (for the 14 and 13 yr olds) and Pack up tents in the dark for less than 24hrs to stay on The Bees and Bugs were horrible. The Host kept comming by and telling us what we could not do.We felt like we were at a Natzi camp.It is not for Families and if you don't have a fancy RV you are shunned.I will never camp there again and will be sure to not recommend it to anyone.

Stayed in yurt 3 for two nights. Yurt 2,3,4 have the best views. Yurt 2 is out on a point which has the best views. Avoid yurt 5. Very close to the entrance and overlooks shallow, muddy water. The grounds are beautiful, very well maintained. The cots are hard so next time I plan on bringing foam pads. We made the mistake of renting a paddle boat for $30 dollars a day but when you check in be sure to ask for the $6 dollar a day canoe that is stored under your yurt. Great little fishing lake, we caught alot of bass and had a wonderful time. You can hear trains go by every hour during the night, I loved the sound, Husband not so much. Be sure to bring a bike, the trails are amazing. I hope to return in late summer when the colors are changing.
