Would of loved to see this place:(

We traveled to Reggello for the olive oil Festival and it was a great experience, local farms showcasing their new harvest of olive oils, honey, baked goods (yum! Gastronomic Biagioni) with local handmade talents. It was our first time, it was a Sunday and perhaps this played a role but there were no taxis, bike rentals, motorized transportation to bring us up the mountainside (under 3 miles away!). We were unaware that this is such a small town that public transportation to this castle or to local forest was not available. We were dropped off by a Florence cab service (So. Co. Ta. 4242- Carlo our driver made the 45 min drive pleasant!) and I wish I knew to ask him to stay. next time we come to visit we will definitely bring our own car rental or driver. Beautiful simple town with friendly faces.

Attempts to see the castle
Jul 2017 • Friends
Castle it is located on a hill and there are few roads leading to it. Unfortunately access is closed and although we have tried from 3 different directions with car and walking we didn't manage to cross barriers around it. Access is totally closed and we were unable to see it. All pictures promise great and worthy place to see.

so disappointed because it was closed
Mar 2017 • Family
Saw this castle featured on BBC travel in February 2017 so since we were heading to Florence we thought we would add to our travel itinerary. We were heading south and tried to find it. No luck. So a week later when we were heading back north we tried again. This time we found it but it was blocked off so we walked. It was closed and derelict. So disappointing. It had looked so beautiful. So sad that there is no funding to restore the grounds and maintain the castle. And yet on the way up the hill to the castle there is a thriving outlet mall with Gucci, Versace, McQueen etc.

Absolutely Beautiful, Unbelievable and foreign.

I had heard that the castello is not always opened to the public. It is privately owned and not a museum so there are no regular hours. We were lucky. It was right around 5pm and they were closing and asked us to come back another day, no room. My friend said, but she's come from California! That was the key that opened the door one last time that day. It took a minute for my eyes to adjust; maybe it was the light or maybe it was the surreal beauty that enveloped me. I couldn't believe the explosion of color. I was no longer in Italy but had entered the ancient Kasbah of Morocco. Intricate patterns of colorful mosaics covered the walls, floors and ceilings. Arabic scrolls adorned the arched doorways connecting rooms like a path of dominos. From blasts of color in one room to soothing all white rooms, the contrast screamed attention. I was ablaze in awe and found myself unable to truly take it all in. It was completely unexpected.
Built in the 1600, Castello di San Mezzano is in need of some TLC and I have heard it is up for sale. We also heard that there is a Chinese group that is looking to purchase it and turn it into a luxury hotel. I would hope that the Italian government would scoop it up and make it a museum for everyone to enjoy. This is a true work of art that is a national treasure. I lived in the area for 7 years and never knew it existed until my trip 2 weeks ago when some friends brought me here. Absolutely worth the wait!!

Beautiful Park, Castle was Closed ....
Jun 2015 • Couples
We drove out to the Parco Della Castello di Sammezzano to see the famous Moorish structure but found that it was closed and in a state of disrepair, which was too bad. Learned later that it's open only a few times each year and that plans for its restoration are underway. All was not lost as the park is huge and filled with towering trees and greenery. Learned that a bit of advance homework would have been best. ...

Total waste of time!!

Unfortunately we did not see this latest review written just 6 days ago and headed to Sammezzano in a rental car from Florence to see the much anticipated "peacock rooms". We couldn't even get there, the roads are all blocked off and a local told us it was boarded up. So disappointing. We went to San Gimignano instead.

Do NOT go here!
Apr 2014
This castle has been completely ruined.  Everything is either gated or bricked shut.
Windows are smashed out and there are lots of bees inside.

Looking in the windows, it looks like careless people have went inside and trashed the place.
The roads up the mountain are blocked off and it’s impossible to get there by car, it takes a long hike.

Not sure how it got in such bad shape so quickly after seeing great pictures from less than a year ago, but we were extremely disappointed to waste half a day of our vacation going here.
