About
Tybee Beach Ecology Trips, conducted on Tybee Island, Georgia, by marine biologist Dr. Joe Richardson, are fun and educational experiences for all ages. Typical two-hour beach trips include: high and low tide beachcombing, exploring tide pools and sandy intertidal habitats, pulling a 50 foot beach net, and learning information about the animals you find. Trips are scheduled for families and small groups, scout groups, schools, adult tours, and other groups. Much more than just a beach trip!

Had a fairly large group of the friendliest people ever, and still there was time for each and every question to be discussed. Dr. Joe is a gentleman and a scholar, AND a scientist. He was completely engaged and attentive to everyone, brought out some unique tools, and casually led us to 4 areas of interest on the beach, each with something new to find. This is a rich experience for all ages.

What we found and observed: live sand dollars, shrimp, half a dozen different crabs, jellies, sponges, anemones, snails, dozens of beautiful fish, and a pod of dolphins.

We made sure to plan a Tybee Beach Ecology Trip on our visit to Savannah. We had a group with ages ranging from 7 to 83, and everyone had a blast. Dr. Joe makes the trip exciting as he helps everyone discover the treasures on what looks like a sandy beach.

I had no idea what to expect when our Girl Scout troop booked a beach ecology trip for a windy and cool February afternoon, but it was such a great experience, and I would recommend as a new way to explore the beach. Dr. Joe was fantastic all-around - he was passionate, knowledgable, and so patient and fun with our large group of 11 year olds! He made it so interesting. I grew up spending summers at the beach, but I still learned so much on this trip. Dr. Joe brought a variety of tools to explore the beach and water life, and his relaxed/unstructured method of exploration allowed the girls to learn while also exploring on their own and having fun. He put together a touch tank with all the live critters that we discovered, and then in the end we released them all back to the ocean. Added bonus - lots of free souvenirs (variety of shells including conch, shark teeth).
Thank you, Dr. Joe!

Thanks very much. I'll often say "You never know what you'll see on Tybee's beach!" and your alls trip was a perfect example. I had a great time out there with you all. Thanks again for being willing to take a chance on the weather, and then for being a fun and enthusiastic group out on the beach. You all did really well.

Spent a week at Tybee in May 2021 and this was my favorite thing. Dr Joe is amazing and so knowledgeable. He was patient and let everyone take their time and explore. It was my husband and I with two families and watching the children was so enjoyable. This is a great family and couples adventure and what a pleasure to see these parents introducing their children to the sea and sea life. I grew up at the beach and never knew the things Dr Joe taught us. I'll always look for these sea creatures now as I walk the beach. I loved participating and it was fun to "dig" for the ghost shrimp. We found so much. Grown ups and children alike were excited to find different forms of life. I highly recommend this pleasant experience.

We love Dr. Joe! He is so kind and informative. We never felt rushed and he taught us so much. It rained on us the first hour and it was tempting to duck out because of being cold and wet, but we were having so much fun. My daughter was so excited to help Dr. Joe with the seining! It was definitely worth every penny! We even contacted Dr. Joe after returning home to ask a few questions to help finish a Girl Scout Badge. He was more than happy to help and sent a lengthy response. As my daughter would say, "10 out of 10, would recommend!"

Dr. Joe is excellent at keeping everyone engaged while showing you things you never knew were there. He was genuinely excited to talk about everything the group found and we learned so much about life on the beach that's easily overlooked. This isn't just for kids, adults will love it as well!

Great for families. The little kids and the teenagers were all participating and having so much fun exploring, finding animals, and learning from Dr Joe. (Adults too!!). Everything we found was placed back into its habit. Totally worth getting up early on vacation

I think this may have been my favorite part of the whole vacation. Dr. Joe was so friendly and patient with all the children (and parents). You can tell he really loves what he is doing. He is retired professor. There were all ages on this trip. My teen is interested in ecology/ environmental science as a major and loved this trip. There were also families with young children and they really seemed to love all they were learning. It is very hands on for everyone. This is a must do while in Tybee!

This was even better than I expected and sometimes I expect a lot. As a homeschool mom, I look for unique, educational opportunities wherever we go (insert the groan of teenagers here). The beach ecology trip with Dr. Joe was the purpose of our drive (4hours) and trip to Tybee. TOTALLY WORTH IT! My teen girls had a blast and agree Dr. Joe was super knowledgeable and interesting. I love all things science and was thrilled we had lots of hands on science. We found and learned about sand dollars, starfish, anchovies, silver sides, pompano, ghost shrimp, mole crabs, hermit crabs, blue crabs, speckled crabs, and moon snails. Adults, teens, and younger kids all seemed to enjoy this excursion. Thank you Dr. Joe!

Dr. Joe met us on the North Beach of Tybee island and had our 14 girls (ages 10-12) spotting signs of ghost shrimp, exploring tidal pools, saving sea stars, and catching sea animals for our temporarily live tank. Many families came over to see the animals we had caught and couldn't believe how cool this was. Dr. Joe (a retired professor) was an excellent teacher and very relatable. I would definitely recommend for all ages!
