Ms. Blanche Dickson, with roots in Scotland had this manor, located close to the sea, built around the turn of the 20th century (completed 1904 to be more exact). The inspiration came for the Arts & Craft movement (William Morris among others). The furiture originally came from Liberty in London and some of it still remains in the building.(When the family sold the manor in the sixties the furniture was scattered but it has been possible to buy a lot back.)
Running a vast estate as this required a fairly large workforce. As commuting was not a option a workers village was build on the estate. These houses are now restored and it is even possible to rent a cottage. To provide for the kids there was also a school, now converted into a restaurant. (Serving a good luch at a fair price and ample seating outside.) And to make it all complete there is a church close to the school.
Touring the manor this summer was selfguiding with an extensive documentation. The tour-guides working as hosts and available for additional informaning (one-on-one and appropiate social distancing).
Outside (the manor) there is an extensive garden. Part of it is still under reconstruction. The guided tour (yes, outside and a live guide) took us around the garden and explained all the different flower bed and, among other things, how to form trees (thuja occidentalis) in a cone form.
Between the manor and the sea is a vast lawn, off limits, except for the garden tour. Entering the lawn was on par with entering the pitch in the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Ga. Simply awesome.

Any signs and explanations on the parking slot, outside the castle and even at the museum entrance are in Swedish only. Based on this we decided not to pay the entrance fee. Anyway there is plenty to see outside of the castle. Nice castle in general, nice beach and good tracks for walking around. The parking slot is crazy expensive and in terrible condition. One paying machine was not working at all, the other one had really strange translations in English and German. At least fresh water was for free. From all castles we visited in Sweden this was all in all not really the worth the visit.

You find yourself thrown back to some medieval time, with a castle built on dreams of knighthood and chivalry. Not that kind with towers and a moat, but completely built by stone and dark inside. Part of the castle also has a Tudor-style architecture. Still great to be able to see how “the life of the wealthy” would be like mote than hundred years ago

We loved it. We (three sisters) visited Tjoloholms Slott with a cousin from Gothenberg. It was a glorious late summer's day and the gardens were magnificent. The vista from the steps to the sea is tranquil and accessible. The castle is quite extraordinary with mind-boggling expense not much of an issue for Blanche Dickson, the lady who oversaw its construction and development. There was a Liberty's exhibition there when we visited and to see all the bespoke furniture, carvings and items such as the central heating system -- and don't miss Blanche's hairdryer! -- we of much interest. Part of the exterior of the castle was encased as repairs were being completed. Thank goodness the local council has taken over the upkeep of this remarkable building.
However, do not leave without visiting the workers' village which Blanche also built. The employees of the estate lived here -- there's even a village hall. It is an example of the philanthropic attitude of the Victorians and many of the methods used to harvest crops are still used there today, more for interest than efficiency.
What a place to hold a wedding or a huge party! If you have the wherewithal, take the opportunity. If not, just make sure you visit this magnificent place.

Very interesting history, and interesting ideas of what the most modern technologies were at the time, like the full body showers with shower heads at every angle. Phenomenal wood work throughout.

We visited in the evening after the main building was closed but it is absolutely a beautiful setting and grounds. I wish I had more time to relax on the grounds and I would highly recommend packing a lunch and bringing a bathing suit. My wife wanted to see a castle in Sweden and this is absolutely the closest thing we have found to that while we are visiting for the past week.

Tjolöholm is a beautiful mansion with an exterior that matches the exciting exterior. And their café in the servant's quarter is very cosy.

My husband and I got married here in 2011 and we could not have asked for a better winter wedding. We were well taken care of by Håkan who provided exceptional service in a personal manner. We were never made to feel like 'customers', rather he made us feel special.

The food was amazing and prooved a 5* experience with a traditional swedish caviar starter, pea and champagne soup, game & cod, all served by impeccably dressed and well mannered staff. Despite the high level of service the party & venue never felt stuffy and we had a truly a fantastic party!

The day after the wedding they put on a brunch in the annexed "cantine" which was also extremely nice - I was just looking up a recipe for Västerbotten cheese pie and remembered how delicious the Tjolöholm one was which prompted me to write this review!

Oh, thank you for this lovely review! We just adore weddings! It's such a pleasure to enjoy the happiness and heartwarming feeling of these special events. And, after all, the venue you choose for your wedding will set the frame for the entire experience. Hope to see you soon again! Perhaps a weekend break for your weeding day? It would be a true privilege!

I was there during working day but after opening hours. Maybe even better as I could visit all this place ( outside) in peace and quiet. I have just paid 35 SEK for parking. It is definitely worth to go there. Place is so charming like from fairy tale.
