About
Since its founding in 1842, the Central State Hospital Campus (originally known as the Georgia State Lunatic, Idiot, and Epileptic Asylum) has been one of Milledgeville’s most well known and intriguing sites. The site gained national recognition during the 1960s as the worlds’ largest mental institution with over 12,000 patients, 6,000 employees, and more than 8,000 acres of land. Today, Central State Hospital serves over 200 existing patients and has downsized to roughly 2,000 acres of land. Take a free self-guided driving tour that highlights the historic buildings of the campus and mentions important people from CSH's past as well as the significance of certain periods in the Hospital's history. Brochures are available at the Milledgeville Visitor's Center and outside Just Imagine Cottage. For those interested in exploring more of the history of the former Central State Hospital campus, a guided trolley tour is offered monthly.

Secuity guy follow you around
Sep 2021
great place to photography. it is huge and can take all day photography. my problem was secuity following us every where, i understand that noone is allowe in the building. But one of them made his mission to get us out there. The other secuity was cool, told us to watch out for coyetes and told where we can find somme interesting places. The cops was cool too. told us that some area they ask not to be due to a problem with the active prison several mile in the woods. But that one secuity guy followed us throught several parts. why say we allow to look at the building and the area if you just going to make people feel uncomfortable. and yes i will be back to take more photography.

Great, Creepy Place!

So this was a photographers dream! The decrepit, abandoned buildings of Central State Hospital provide an amazing photographic playground. While you cannot enter the buildings, nor get too close, and some are being redeveloped; there’s plenty to see and take photos of. My only gripes were a lack of maps, which led to me missing out on some cool areas, and I wish they offered tours more often, or tours through the indoors in the buildings that are safe. Regardless, I hope to come back, and photograph its further decay soon!

Central State ghost town
Oct 2019 • Couples
We visited Central State today. I’m sure a great number of people were helped there, but now it’s a ghost town. What a shame that all the buildings are abandoned and crumbling. We enjoyed talking to the security guard.

Central State could be a beautiful place again!!!! People would love to tour around eat in the grounds even a bar there with tv’s and outside dining would be great it’s beautiful out there and so much history I wish someone would save the power plant and the beautiful buildings that can never be replaced

Old Buildings
Sep 2019
This is a strange place. There isn't really anything to see but a bunch of deserted run down old buildings. It seems this would be a great place to put in a museum that's open, perhaps a guided walking path etc. What a waste of a piece of history.

Beautiful Campus
Jun 2019 • Couples
We passed through Milledgeville on our way from Macon and decided to make a quick stop by Central State Hospital campus. While the museum was closed, we drive around and got out and walked in some parts to take photos. The buildings are beautiful! I definitely would like to know more of the history of the hospital.

Great history lesson.

We all knew about this place however we knew very little about its history.
You will need a very good tour guide when you visit this location. Luckily the guide on our trolley ride was very knowledgeable and it was fascinating to learn about this place. A very sad story but it needs to be told. Please visit, you won't be sorry.

CSH has my heart
Apr 2019 • Solo
While the museum is closed, CSH is still a beautiful and peaceful place to visit. Some buildings have been repurposed and are back in use since the hospital closed. The old architecture is stunning and the grounds are very nice. Due to the lack of upkeep on many of the structures, serious dangers prevent entry to most. Best to go by the security office to grab a map and let them know you are there. A map will help you explore the huge campus. Then you can drive around and walk too while obeying the signs of "No Entry". Go, take a picnic lunch and eat in the Pecan Grove. It is an experience that will change you.

Drove through
Apr 2019 • Family
Drove through this amazing campus on way back from the beach. Truly an amazing piece of georgia history. We drove through entire campus stopping at a few buildings to peek into windows. Its a shame the state cant run official tours as it is a fascinating place.

So much history here, yet so sad. As long as the signs posted are respected security is not an issue. But they are watching, as these building are slowly falling down.
