If you've been to Arlington or other National Cemeteries, you know the moving experience it can be. Marietta, while certainly not as big, gives a similar sense. With patriots buried here from the nearby Civil War battles through our nation's other wars, and veterans passing since, this is worth a visit. Full or nearly full, they've opened another up in Canton, Georgia, but this one definitely has the historic impact on top of everything else.

We live in Marietta, and the cemetery is right on the main road, toward the center square, so it is hard to miss. However, it is easy to pass by and never stop to experience the tranquility as well as the history. If you are in the area, you should visit.

A serene place that stimulates appreciation and emotions ! A fitting monument to those who gave their lives for our form of government and freedom. More that 10,000 Union Soldiers and Officers from the Civil War are buried here. There are also persons from other wars: Revolutionary, WW I, WW II, Korean, & Vietnam. Nearly 20,000 soldiers and family members in total. The white markers with names, dates and the involved war are very touching. This National Cemetery with more than 20 acres of graves on a beautiful hill with scattered trees was established in 1866 after Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. It was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places during the fall of 1998. It is located between Roswell St and Washington Ave (South to North) and Rogers and Rock Streets (West to East). They even have a Pearl Harbor Monument that was added Dec 7, 1996. I am very sorry that I lived in Marietta, GA for more 25 years before I walked these hallowed grounds! I pause and salute them all !

It is essentially impossible to enjoy the beautiful grounds at the Marietta National Cemetery due to the restrictions. You are not allowed to run, walk your dog, or even walk briskly through the grounds. These activities are considered "disrespectful."

However, you can drive your car all along the paths with abandon.

This site is in need of a rule change that makes it accessible to the local community. I have lived in Marietta for two years just a five minute walk from the front gates, and I rarely see anyone visiting. It is a shame to let this place go to waste.

People mention that you can picnic here in other reviews, but that is illegal and against the posted rules as well. Too bad.

This is an interesting place to visit with its actual Civil War cannon and Civil War graves. It is nicely kept with Confederate flags on the gravestones. Highly recommended for any students of history or anyone with an interest in the Civil War.

When Daughters of the Confederacy wouldn't allow union soldiers to be buried next to confederate soldiers, one man, seeking to bring unity back to the south, founded this spot to honor the dead. It is beautifully laid out in a liberty bell design that can be seen from the top of the hill. Nice spot.

This is an interesting location, it is well maintained, and very sobering but enlightening as well. In the middle of an urban area, but this is a silent oasis with a lot of dignity.

You can be on the hilltop here and feel a million miles away from the hectic hubbub this cemetery is an oasis of peace and beauty. The numerous events held through the year to honor veterans of many wars are very touching and important. We are losing our connections to those brave men and women as they pass. This is one way to remember and honor their service and sacrifice.
