- Dawn M1 contributionProvidence Canyon Georgia State Park is located in Lunpkin, Georgia. It is worth the six hour drive from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Before arriving at the state Park, be sure to fill up and eat at least 40 to 60 minutes before arriving. There is not much in the city of Lumpkin. Albany has food, hotels and gas. We stayed two hours away in Valdosta - a larger city. Arriving at the state park, you will pay $5.00 for parking and they will supply a map. I recommend heading to the visitor center and starting the hike by making a right turn down the trail. White blaze canyon loop is a 3 mile loop but once you complete the canyon walks it really is about 5 miles. Each canyon gets better and more impressive from one to eight. Canyon 9 was too muddy and wet so didn’t complete that one. It is important to wear hiking boots! I recommend bringing along water and snacks. If not, the visitor center sells cold water and snacks upon your return. There are also bathrooms. The prices are affordable for souvenirs like tee shirts and stuffed animals. It takes about .25 miles to get down the trail. Once you arrive you will spend time going down the paths that lead to the canyons. Some of these paths start off very wet and muddy and become dryer as you get closer to the canyons. The views are spectacular. Upon leaving the Canyons you will walk another 1.5 to 2 miles back to visitor center. Before arriving back you will have many views looking down on the canyons. There are a lot of trees so some views are blocked. It is still worth completing the full loop! There is plenty of seating and picnic benches along the upper trail. Also, bring plastic bags to put your shoes in after getting back - lots of mud! This place is pet friendly too! I hope this post was useful! Enjoy!!!! 😊Visited November 2024Traveled with familyWritten November 24, 2024
- kristi b22 contributionsThe scenery was stunning. I could of looked out all day at the beautiful colormof the canyon rocks. The fall tree colors was just to.topmoff the beauty. This is a must go and see..will need several hours to enjoy upper and lower views. Walking down is definitely a lot easier than the walk up. Will definitely be back.Visited December 2024Traveled with friendsWritten December 10, 2024
- BakerBlakely, Georgia554 contributionsAbsolutely stunning views, The clay had so many different vibrant colors and textures. The Canyons were way bigger sizes than I had expected, you can spend a good portion of the day walking around the park and see them from so many different angles and heights. The floor of the canyon was very muddy, definitely wear shoes / clothes you can get dirty and not worry about. This place is a must-see for anyone traveling in Georgia looking for a phenomenal view.Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 30, 2024
- aaron8430Macon, Georgia168 contributionsTo experience the view of the canyon as I hike 3.5 miles was extremely satisfying and relaxing. The various views of the canyon wall made for some beautiful pictures. A return trip is definitely in orderVisited September 2024Traveled with friendsWritten October 12, 2024
- RoadtriptrishaPhoenix, Maryland653 contributionsNice visitor center with clothing, snacks, ice cream, and other souvenirs. We grabbed a map and the ranger suggested we do the loop (as we had planned) and also hike into the canyons to see 4, 5, 6 and 7. We ended up going back the fork to 4/5 and did 6 and 7 first and then went back to 4/5...which worked out well because we saved the best for last. Each canyon had unique red rocks/views and the trails overall had tree canopy so you're not in full sun while walking. A good portion of the trail was in a muddy wet area with creek flowing in some areas (about 2 inches deep) so the bottom of your shoes will get dirty but you don't need special shoes - our hiking shoes were perfect. The loop around the canyons - especially the 2nd half was really cool. We spent 2 1/2 hours to do the 4 canyons and loop. Definitely recommend it to families and people of all levels.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 5, 2024
- ATerrellSmithPiedmont, South Carolina46 contributionsWe arrived a little too early to catch peak leaf season, but our first visit to Providence Canyon was still fantastic! It is such a unique hike, and viewing the canyon from the bottom is very different than from the top. We started at the visitor’s center and hiked the Canton Overlook Trail counterclockwise (as recommended by the park attendant). We had plenty of time to explore all of the canyons on the floor before heading back up and enjoying the views from the rim. The scenery is something one would expect to see in Utah or Sedona — not Georgia. Great experience!Visited November 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten November 9, 2024
- SandeeVillas, New Jersey522 contributionsVery beautiful as stated it resembles the Grand Canyon! There's a small look out that would be ADA compliant for wheelchair or stroller right next to visitors center where free maps are provided. Beyond this point there is no assessibility on trail for stroller..lots of tree roots and red clay Take water. Hats. Bug spray for 1 - 2 hour walk. There's pavilion and child's playground. If you park near the church the view across street is great.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 28, 2024

My husband and I stayed 2 nights at Providence canyon recently. The options for couples are between primitive or pioneer sites 1/2. Pioneer site #3 is for big groups only.
Our choice of pioneer site #2 was one I was extremely happy with as temperatures dropped into the teens one night and we were able to bring more gear than we could have had we hiked in. Pioneer site #2 is at the end of a short dirt road containing sites 1 & 2 and is more private but I wouldn't recommend it if you don't have a truck.
The site contained a fire ring with cooking grate, 2 picnic tables, garbage can, rain cover for tables etc, and a drop toilet. The toilet was very clean but smells horrible. Not sure if there's some sort of treatment needed? Also. there is no water at the site at all so you will need to bring enough for dishes etc.
The visitor center and the park at large is well maintained with friendly staff. Visiting in the winter gave us the opportunity to to enjoy hiking and exploring without concern for a lot of crowds.

My advice: Bring cash for the parking fee. Go early in the morning in winter and bring waterproof shoes.
Overall: I would not go again, but I am glad I went once.
Pros: Pleasant in winter, decent hike,
Cons: Crowded, no shade
We went on a Saturday in January expecting a peaceful hike in beautiful (un)natural surroundings. It was very crowded. No regular parking remained, and people were double parking on the road.
This would have been unpleasant in the summer due to the lack of shade and Georgia humidity, but it was cool and pretty enough in winter. The bottom of the canyon had water running through it which was pretty and fun to walk through. Bathrooms were present and flushed.

I found out about this park when I was in graduate school when I was watching a television show. I always wanted to see this park, but I never had the right opportunity. This park was about an hour‘s drive from Columbus. The staff was friendly and there was a five dollar ($5.00) parking fee which one must drop into a box. There was also a gift shop, some bathrooms, a playground, and some grills. The walk down to the canyons was steep, but the nine (9) canyons were absolutely incredible! The signage was not my favorite, but I got many beautiful pictures of the canyons. It was buggy and the ground was wet and sandy, so please use the best judgment with regard to these factors. The canyon loop trail was also very interesting and one was able to see many rusted cars. I arrived on a Monday at about 8:30 AM, and I was the only guest there for quite some time. I walked about five (5) miles in the 2.75 hours which I spent at the park. I did see a few rodents but no other significant animal life. The cell phone reception was poor within the park. One should also carry some water during his or her time on the trails.

As a native Floridian I really enjoyed this trip!Very beautiful red canyons only 4/5 hours away from home without having to go too far west. We went down to the canyon floor to explore, the walk down was steep, so I knew the walk up after walking all day down there would be tricky and it definitely was-especially I’m not “in shape” lol down on the canyon floor we found canyons 1-3 wasn’t too great for viewing, but 4-5 was beautiful! Also 8 has great views! They are marked to a certain extent, then you’re on you’re own lol we ran into another lady who was sort of lost like we were, wasn’t sure if that’s a canyon path or forced path by others, so we bonded and found our way around together. It was a great time on the floors and up above where the parking was to look down at the canyons. We didn’t do white trail/blaze or the red. Great time for $5! I love Georgia parks! Would recommend coming in a cooler month to enjoy more of the experience. Unless you can handle the heat and humidity :) Also recommend taking shoes/socks off to walk in the clay. It was heavenly

Camping review: Backcountry.
It is $10/person/night with $10 overnight parking fee.
Campsite 1 and 2 are closest to scenic views, and have shortcuts. If those are not available, campsite 6 is the closest when you go through the red-blaze trail.
The hikes to the campsites are up and down hill drastically (some places felt like a 80 degree incline) and are usually a two mile hike, so plan accordingly. There was plenty of dry dead wood available even after rain because if the canapes, we discovered carrying wood up hill was not worth it. Calculate how much water you need pr day, for drinking, cooking and cleaning your utensils. They recommend, when hiking or physically asserting yourself, .5 liters/person/hour and I agree.
You WILL stand in about 2 inches of water in some areas when hiking so water proof shoes are almost a necessity. There is a shallow Creek with an orange clay bed running through the area. Only animals to watch out for are hogs (especially mother's with babies) and small coyotes, but we saw none of them.
This is in the middle of no where and the nearest grocery store is about a 30 min drive, so plan accordingly.
It is beautiful and the people running it are super super sweet and helpful. I loved my stay, just wish I had calculated my water a bit more accurately and that I had believed people when they said there would be enough wood before carrying that extra weight. Credit cards accepted for camping reservations and parking fees but not accepted if just hiking for the day. $5 day parking cash only.

We loved this park!
The canyon, courtesy of bad farming practices/soil erosion, is absolutely gorgeous. As this is a popular park, it’s best to arrive early to ensure you have somewhere to park.
There is a rim trail and trails down into the canyons. Both trails start at the visitor center.
The rim trail does give some views of the canyons; however, after you see the last of the overviews, you will end up in the forest…for the overwhelming majority of the trail. I like the forest so what the hay. This is also how you access the “backcountry trails” and you’ll see the abandoned vehicles that have now become a part of the natural landscape. When you’re almost back to the visitor’s center, you will see the trails to the canyons or you can continue on the White trail to the Visitors’ Center.
If you go straight down into the canyons from the Visitor’s center, you’ll have a steep ¼ mile trail down and back. Lots of fun after hours of hiking. (laugh)
There are some stream bed crossings if you go to the canyon trail area. However, when we went, the water was sparse and low enough that even in tennis shoes, my socks did not get wet.
Canyons 1-3 have only 1 quick stream bed crossing.
Canyons 4 & 5 require you to walk in the stream bed for a bit and Canyon 5 has the most canyon views.
We saw many birds and had a great time here. By the time we left at around 1pm, the parking lots were all full with people making new parking spots in the grass and even no parking areas.
Just 6 or so miles down the road is the Florence Marina State Park that has a marina of course but also camping facilities.

Providence Canyon State Park in Georgia was a great find. Clean park with parking (only $5 daily pass), picnic areas, playgrounds (closed for COVID), hiking trails (10+ miles), and beautiful views with unique landscapes for the Southeast United States region. Our family of 3 teens hiked the 7 mile backcountry trail, the 3 mile rim trail and explored the deep gullies and up steep canyon trails (almost all, I believe there was nine of them). Spent two half days hiking.
Strongly recommend hiking boots, or sturdy closed toed shoes! Even if you do not plan to hike a lot, wear a good (but older) pair of tennis shoes. There are smaller rocks on the way down, lots of pretty red clay/sand and thin layer of water along much of the trails at the bottom (area is below the water table). We saw little kids in brand new clothes/shoes getting yelled at by their mom not to get dirty... ummm you are out in nature and getting dirty was part of the fun! Some older people wearing flip flops... yeah, not smart.
We arrived fairly early to beat the heavier traffic and crowds. Even later in the day, everything was peaceful and breathtaking.

Wow what a cool view. The hike down to canyon floor was good. Pretty steep incline. Walking through the stream and clay took some getting used to but made the experience cooler. The weather was perfect for us that day and all the colors popped out of the walls brilliantly. You can spend a few hours or all day here. Take water. Seriously. Take the water. Oh and don’t wait for the trolley to get back to the top like I did. There isn’t one. You gotta hike that steep trail you came down. Seriously. Take the water. We absolutely loved the experience. We stayed in Columbus which is about 30 minutes away and found many reasons to come back to the area. We were here for a quick 3 day visit but found plenty to do if you stay for a week. The whole area is pretty and quiet. Definitely put this on your list. Early spring or mid fall would be peak time.

We had a perfect day to explore the Canyon. An absolute must is good walking/hiking footwear. This is not a walk on pavement. The ground is uneven with roots and dips. But what a fun adventure! There is much shade on the Canyon Loop Trail. Trees have a white blaze to mark the trail and I would have liked a few more trees marked than currently there.
Some of the lookout views are partially obstructed with trees that could be cut back. The scenery is beautiful and we took many pictures. We took our time and hiked this trail in almost two hours. We went in the middle of the week so it was not crowded. This is an inexpensive outdoor activity as the fee to park is $5.
Take water to drink. Even though it was cool and shady, you will need to drink. The gift shop has snacks and beverages available for sale.

We recently found out about the Providence Canyon State Park and drove down as we were both off and needed somewhere to go that we can socially distance. It was raining but I'd still highly recommend this place as you can walk down into the canyon (which some people were down there even with the rain but we didn't do it because it was really muddy. We hope to go back when we can spend more time and see it to the fullest. Absolutely Beautiful!!!

If a person has physical challenges that prohibit serious "hiking" is it still possible to see some of the canyon with some simple walks? What kind of time should we expect to spend?

Would an hour be enough to see a bit of the canyon or do you really need to walk the longer trails to appreciate it?

Thinking of visiting the park in a week or so. Will be traveling with 2 Kim’s - 6 year and 18 month. Mainly interested for a family outing but is it worth staying overnight with two young kids? Mainly interned spending more time at Canyon 4 & 5. Any tips on reaching there with comfort from the parking area?
