My kind of town
Jan 2021 • Family
Rocktown is a short hike, maybe 30 minutes or so, to a rock outcropping that is great for bouldering and free climbing. Most of the rocks are approximately 20 feet high. It is an interesting spot to spend the afternoon and give the kids something fun to do.

Great place to explore.

We really enjoyed our hike around here. However, I have since read that wild animals can be hidden amongst the rock crevices, we only found a buzzard but I would suggest children are kept close by rather than left to explore on their own which would be very tempting for them as its a great place to explore.

Pay attention as you walk in. Look back often to know the terrain leaving or it's easy to get turned around and lost. You'll be slack jawed to see all the different rock formations.

Great place to take the kids and have family fun while teaching them about the outdoors. You can get lost if not careful.

Adventure abounds in hidden location

I was able to visit portions of this Georgia Wildlife Management Area while here on a wildlife biologist workshop. Besides Rocktown, be sure to check out the Crockford-Pigeon Mountain WMA Headquarters for information about other interesting location on the area. Be sure to check in as required and obtain the necessary recreational pass permits. Go caving in the many caves open to the public but remember you are at your own risk be sure to check in at the self service check in stations before entering. Should an accident happen, the check in information will ensure a prompt attempt from rescue personnel to be able to find you. Visit the Shirley - Miller Wildflower Trail and Pocket Rock Trailhead near Lafayette, which is all handicapped accessible with wooden boardwalks the the creek bottom full of mature timber and wildflowers beside the rock ladden creek.

Great Hike With Kids
Sep 2015 • Family
Take lots of water with you and find a restroom before you get there because there are no facilities when you get there. The trail is nicely shaded though a little rough in places. There are great places to climb for kids and experts alike - sometimes in the same boulders! I had no interest in climbing but really enjoyed the interesting formations and textures and colors in the rocks. There is an overlook on the east side of the mountain that we stopped at on the way up with a fabulous view for miles.

I love this place.

If you love outdoors, go here. I've been here many times. It is about a 1 mile hike to Rocktown from the parking area. The rock formations there are awesome to see and most time people are climbing around on them.Lots of families and groups visit. No restrooms there, so that may be a problem for some people. During the summer watch out for snakes. Rocktown is not far from the town of Lafayette, but driving up the mountain to Rocktown is steep and some people don't like the ride.Trust me, my wife and son don't like the drive up and down.
The road, Rocky Lane, is steep, narrow, and winding road, but is paved. The top of the mountain is a gravel road.
****You must now have a GORP(Georgia Outdoor Recreation Pass) Pass to go there.I purchase mine at Walmart in Lafayette, but they can be purchased online. They will issue citations if you don't have a pass.*** Here is the website for the GORP PASS. http://www.georgiawildlife.com/Georgia-Outdoor-Recreational-Pass

Nice hike and view

Last week we hiked this place. It was warm weather and good hike. Beware that, you should remember the path you are going. Else you will be rounding or hiking to other end.
