The Airai Bai is one of the last standing meeting houses left in Palau (in Airai state, not far from the airport). You can read in many guidebooks about the history of this location. Our visit was hosted by one of the chiefs of the Airai clan. It was an incredible experience as he took the time to walk us around the grounds, explaining the meaning and cultural importance to the Palaun people, as well as the threats to it's continued existence. We were invited into the Bai to learn more about why it exists, it's construction and traditions, and how the meetings of the chiefs are organized. Chief Ngarai (I'm certain I'm spelling it incorrectly) was a gracious and patient host, answering our endless questions and allowing us to take pictures. They clan has done a terrific job of preserving this site and building, and are more than accommodating to tourists seeking to learn more about the Bai and Palaun culture. If you're interested in the history of the Palaun people and their country, DO NOT miss this.

What amazing buildings those Bais are, constructed 200 years ago without nails, ropes or screws the wood just holds together like a jigsaw puzzle.
The naive and pictogram art work is very remarkable, it repeats the main symboles of Palau like the bat, fish in all kinds, canoes, snakes, spiders, birds, rousters, the buns of hair piled on the heads, the tridacna shell, the money sign, and the god of construction ...
