Rustic setting filled with "treasures" - all kinds of rocks, and fossils for purchase, as well as "gems" ready for mounting. Dave was friendly and informative and helpful getting us set up. I asked to find rubies and emeralds and he set me up with that bucket for $16. I did indeed find rubies/emeralds and sapphires, but would have liked the bucket less "staged." Maybe find an odd other rock or two. Literally could have dumped the bucket and just pulled out all the stones. There were lots so you get your money worth. They can polish and set stones at their other location - also a big tourist event.

A very good hike. The pay off at the end is worth it. Not too steep, good for multiple levels of hikers.

Right outside of Helen, you can find Dukes Creek Mines. The owner was very friendly. There are different size buckets for everyone. We each got a gallon. These buckets are salted with big chunks of stones so that everyone gets quite a bit. The kids enjoyed it but liked the mines in franklin, NC better that were not so salted and you found uncut gems that came right from franklin. However, the kids had a great time and we would go back. Got boiled peanuts to go. They were good.

Sue and I sifted two different buckets. She found several rubies worth keeping, while I found a really nice amethyst crystal and some unusual semi-precious stones worth keeping. We plan to Go back tomorrow to consult with the gem cutter. Hopefully he can tighten the diamond in Sue's favorite ring.
