Mom's 90th Birthday

Whole family in to celebrate and visited the Gaol. The ten grandkids really enjoyed the visit to Greensboro and got a big kick out of the rooms, hanging corner and second floor. Not a big place so a short time to see it. Get the key from Genuine Georgia, nice shop and helpful staff. No charge to visit, just return the key!

Definitely worth seeing if you are in the area. We were able to see the inside and take photos. There was a name of a former prisoner engraved on the wall that was neat. Despite the age of the prison it remains very solid.

Historic Preservation Gold Star!
Dec 2019
As a history and geography "buff", there are many categories that I pursue in my studies. I became interested in old jails several years ago quite by accident when I first visited the old jail in Green Cove Springs, FL. On this 3-day "tour" of eastern Georgia, I came across two very nicely preserved ones.
This one is architecturally unique, but has a "darker" past than some. Having seen dungeons in Europe, I shiver at the thought that a stay in this place would be compared to one in a dungeon!
Would have liked to have seen the inside.

Historically Significant
Jul 2019
As a historic site, this one is worth seeing, if you do nothing but take a few photos. So far as I know, this is the only site of its kind in Georgia. There is an interactive kiosk in front of the stone structure that gives you a brief history of this site and others in the area. I would love to see the inside one day.

Gaol pronounced “jail”

Very interesting building with 2’ thick walls, original cells, doors, shackles and the retracting trap door used in hanging. Be sure to read the literature to understand the history. Great stop if you are in town. The visit will take 20-30 minutes. Get the key from the Camber of Commerce (a block away). P.S Gaol is pronounced “jail”.

Pretty boring
Mar 2018 • Family
It is mildly interesting to see this old jail just behind the courthouse in Greensboro. But your interest will wain in about a minute. If you are there it is something to look at. But don't go out of your way to see it. Once in awhile they have it open. This is more interesting. You can see the trap door they had for hangings. But I have no way of knowing when that is.

Disturbing piece of history
Feb 2018 • Friends
The jail is located in the middle of town. It is the site of hangings that occurred in the 1800's. Its eeriness truly makes you sense the awful things that happened there.
