We were capping off a college send off trip with this rafting experience at Southeastern Expeditions. We've been rafting in Colorado and Tennessee before. The scenery of SC/GA is amazing so we were super excited about exploring a new area. We chose to do section 4 (high adventure) and it was awesome. We loved the rapids. It was a ton of fun. The guides provided a lovely lunch on a small sandy beach about half way through that was excellent and appropriate. We loved jumping from the cliff near the end of the journey. I felt safe the whole trip and the guides knew what they were doing. I would have rated the trip a 4-5 except from the moment we got down to the raft, our particular guide, Neil, was not welcoming or friendly. We thought maybe he was just settling in for the day and it would get better. It didn't. As we set out and started learning his rafting commands, I said, our family is open to feedback and if we need to do something that we aren't, please tell us. As we looked around at the other rafts smiling and laughing, my family was hearing "get it together people", "you're not getting it together", coupled with other less than positive phrases. About 2 hours in and 3 hours to go, and with more of the same non-descriptive, non-helpful phrases, I'd turned to Neil and said, "what do you mean by 'get it together'" he repeated himself and I said that we need him to be more directive so we could do better. All I know is, i spent most of the day worried about who was or wasn't "pulling their weight" and why the other rafts didn't seem to have this type of guide. We were not behind the others, we didn't flip, we weren't acting unsafe. Maybe he just had a bad day. I had to keep reminding myself and kids (14 and 23) that his bad attitude didn't need to ruin our day. We continued on, but it was uncomfortable and unfortunate that this exciting, new adventure was overshadowed by our guides lack of professionalism. I'd encourage SE Expeditions to only put him with seasoned rafters to avoid Neil feeling put out by anyone he has to coach. I would recommend this trip to others, just hope they are with a more friendly guide who at least makes you feel welcome to be sharing the same raft for 5 hours.
