    Cabin #5
Cabin #5 is a Great Cabin for a Large Group. It has 3 Bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. We stayed in the winter of 2022 and could see the water from the back porch. There is a very large table that we used for meals and playing games. We had taken our own games but there were games in the closet. The bedrooms and bathrooms were large. Surprisingly, we had good cell phone service at the cabin. We all had either Verizon or StraightTalk (which uses Verizon Towers). No WiFi at the cabin. Everything we needed was in the kitchen except for a pod coffee maker but we had taken our own. We had a great stay at Fort Mountain State Park!!!

    Up into the Mountains!
We loved our stay here. Park is a bit older and not necessarily built for a 35 foot camper, but we did get in and loved every moment there. Loved the hike to the stone wall and the outlook, as well as the autumn colors. Not sure we'd go back since it was tough to get to, get into the site and the access road is tough.

Nice quiet experience with beautiful views
We camped in site 38 for our 20th wedding anniversary. The park is beautiful and well kept. The staff was nice and friendly. We hiked trails and saw some really interesting sites. We have already booked again for June! See you soon

This is one of the stops along the Cohutta - Chattahoochee Scenic Byway and one of its pavilions in the midst of hardwood trees made a nice shady place for our picnic lunch and there was running water. Then we hiked a while up to part of the prehistoric stone wall. The hike up was fairly steep, though there were some large rocks on which you could rest as needed. Even in June a few flame azaleas could be seen in bloom. I also saw in bloom what I think may be trailing arbutus. The majority of folks in the oark were gathered at the lake.

We went Thanksgiving week which had quite a cold morning of about 28 degrees. We went for a hike and it was very pretty. There were many moments it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. There were other people there but not many and it wasn't crowded. Beautiful view from the observation area along the hike. We saw many birds, squirrels, and chipmunks. Definitely a better option than some of the other overcrowded parks we went to. They also had camping and mountain biking which looked fun.

Beautiful state park in the mountains of north central Georgia.
Lots of beautiful sites within the park. Some on top of hills, others near the water. Bathhouse was clean and plenty of soap and paper towels. Campground host was warm and friendly. Very young rangers at check-in were shy and bearly spoke over a whisper but friendly nonetheless. Weather was unseasonably cold! Low 30’s at night for mid-October

Camped 6 sweet nights in #60. Thankful we took a snapshot of the campground map in order to get to our spot easily. Saw many people who missed their turn and had to go around some tight circles to get where they needed to be. Pretty much zero cell phone service but as soon as we left the campground or walked near the lake we had a signal. (AT&T). Walked big rock nature trail and was pleasantly surprised by a cascading mountain stream. Also walked the fire tower trail taking the steps up and wish we had taken the Overlook Trail instead. We took it back and the Overlook into Chatsworth is stunning. Purchased some very green firewood at the visitor center and used it all. Cool nights and still some colors 🍁. Super clean bathrooms and .75 per load to wash or dry laundry. Easy to navigate dump station with 2 spots. We love to always try new parks but will def be back to this one despite the squirrelly drive out of Chatsworth. (We’re fluffy Florida flatlanders).

This is THE park for hiking and mountain biking, though the mountain bike trails I explored were very tough and not for the faint of heart. There were more hiking trails than we could explore during our three nights of camping and we would love to go back and do more hiking. The camping areas are good, with spots somewhat close together but not excessively so and dividing up the camping into separate areas helps make it seem like where you are is a smaller campground. For those looking for a shorter hike/walk with family, the lake walk is quite nice.

GOOD: great views of the Cohutta Forest. The lake trail is very pretty and an easy walk; very flat and easy to navigate.

BAD: One of the things we wanted to see was the observation tower at the top.. we hiked the 4+ miles and over 1000 feet of elevation to get up the Gahuti trail to get there only to find out that the place is closed off and you can't go up to look out. What good is an observation tower at the top of the mountain you can't get to? Also, there were "hosts" who had 3 small, yappy barking dogs that were annoying, considering that every single person coming and going went by their site and they barked incessantly. The hosts were not doing any sort of service as far as I could tell...

UGLY: the Putt Putt was literally growing Algae on the greens and they haven't seen a weed eater or grass cutting in a long time. You would pay at the park ranger station but if you arrive to see the condition of the "course" you'd realize you wasted your $4.

We decided that we needed to get outside and enjoy some different scenery. We decided on Fort Mountain State Park because it is less than a two hour ride from home for us. We hiked the Gahuti Trail which is about an 8 mile loop trail. It was a little more strenuous than we were expecting. The trail was enjoyable with some thick mountain laurel in a few places, creek crossings, a waterfall and a few overlook spots. We chose the 8 mile loop because we suspected that it would be the least traveled trail at the park. We were correct! We passed only 15 other hikers during our loop. We considered hiking to the Stone Wall but we saw that there were a lot of people coming and going on the trail so we just stuck to the Gahuti.

Northern Georgia is just the place to be and Fort Mountain State Park put the nail in the coffin. The hiking trails are shaded, the overlooks are breath-taking and the lake was very pretty. I feel that there should be more markers on the trees and signs at EVERY trail intersection. I would suggest going through the week. It's hardly anyone there. You can take your time and enjoy a bit of solitude.

Because we were on a tight schedule, we visited here in the morning when we really couldn't see much because of the fog. However, the drive on the mountain roads getting here are worth the trip even if the views from the park are not spectacular. Make sure you have plenty of gas before you go as there is none close to the park. Also, don't rely on the gps signal on your cell phone to navigate here as you will lose it & not have it for many minutes at a time. Make sure you have a paper highway map if you are not from the area.
