Dhaulagiri circuit was not able to walk all by the heavy snow that fell on 14th October 13, but contact with the local person who seemed to be homestay at all was the interesting trekking that it was possible for.
I was blessed with good guide porters and was able to spend it really happily every day.
In addition it is day's hiking of YakKharka from circle F of the other side
I was able to enjoy an unpleasant tatopani hot spring and a scene from punhiru.
I thank for the travel agency which accepted a schedule change of degrees willingly.
I want to live for Dhaulagiri circuit by all means next year.

Mountain Dhaulagiri originally called Dhaulasiri is the 6th highest mountain in Nepal and world. One of the formidable Himalayan peak, that challenges and invites the people to be there or just go round to appreciate its natural beauty. One of the greatest mountain peaks of the country, that has the great respect. Loved it being near or even far from it when I see it, so inspiring mountain peak at the same time

October 2012: Together with my friend Udo and guided by my friend Kul Das Tamang of Amazing Authentic Treks we commenced our maiden trek around Dhaulagiri. We were supported by another four Nepalese staff.

Knowing that the trek round Dhaulagiri should be both challenging and rewarding I can confirm this now. I wouldn’t recommend this trek to be one’s first in Nepal – but it is one of the most spectacular indeed and deserves the no.1 rating of the british Adventure Travel Magazines June 2012 issue.

Remembering “good old times” we took the bus to Beni and started walking.
First days alongside the Myagdi Khola were hot – but the streams alongside the trail were filled with water making a welcome refreshment. After Darbang the real trekking started – Nepali flat, but seasoned with stunning views at majestic mountains looking down at green rice terraces. I think the trail being more rugged compared to Annapurna or Manaslu circuit and the “wasted” climbs and descends are covering more altitude – but the scenery is worth it.

Trail passing through steep rock face near Naura

Leaving the last permanent settlement in Boghara you start a two days jungle walk – be careful not to miss the change in the vegetation. You pass through bamboo forests and can admire real tall pine trees. Sometimes the forest reminded me to New Zealand’s Fiordland forest walks.
You emerge out of the forest to arrive right below Dhaulagiri’s west face that is amazingly close. Don’t miss the sunset. And I think now you’re as close you can possibly get to an 8000m peak on a trek in Nepal.

Campsite at Italian Base Camp

From there you continue through the spectacular Pakobhan gorge entering the glacier that will lead you to the Dhaulagiri base camp. The tricky leg crossing the dead ice zone right next to the Italian Base Camp was not tricky this time, however, remember it may be very dangerous after snowfall.
You will have to camp at the ice for two nights, listen to the glacier singing in the night…

Pakobhan Gorge

Walking up to cross the French pass, the first of two passes to cross, will give you plenty of spectacular views at Dhaulagiri’s north slopes. The pass is quite easy with respect to the terrain, I recommend to spend two nights at Dhaulagiri Base camp as it will pay off crossing the passes.

Dhaulagiri North Face at the ascent of French pass

Don’t miss the sunrise after spending a night in the Hidden Valley – it looks as if someone lights up the summits one after another. Hidden Valley looks truly Tibetan – have a walk around and you’ll know why.

Hidden Valley sunrise

Walking up to the Thapa Pass is not a big deal anymore, since you are acclimatized now, but arriving up – whoa! The whole Annapurna massiv towers in front of you, being dwarfed between Thapa peak to the left and Tukuche to the right.

Annapurna massiv from Thapa pass

After enjoying the view you descend only little, facing the Annapurnas all the time. You walk for almost four hours before the view opens towards Mustang and you get a birds eye view down the Kali Gandaki valley – like being in a eagles nest. Cloud permitting you may be able to spot the Thorung Pass at the Annapurna Circuit as well as the famous religious place of Muktinath. Enjoy the sunset at the Nilgiris from one of the best campsites along the trek, don’t miss the sunrise, too.

From there it’s a half day downhill walk to Marpha where your route joins the Annapurna circuit.
I recommend to continue to walk to Kalopani though the buses are running now. This will give you a splendid view of Dhaulagiri’s east face – you will feel very small since the summit towers almost 5500 metres above you.

I have to thank my friend Kul and his team for providing an excellent service to us. Our walk would not have been possible the way we did it without them. Although it was the maiden trek for all of them except one, everything went well and we had a great time walking the circuit. It was a great experience and now we have finished circumnavigating all the three 8000m peaks that are entirely in Nepal.

I strongly recommend to carry ice axe and crampons as they may be necessary in snowy conditions. Gaiters are a must, even if another group brakes the trail for you. Don’t forget premium sun protection for all members, including the porters. Especially descending from Thapa pass you are walking for a prolonged time in snow, facing the sun all the time. The sun is going to fry you if you do not take good care. Be careful when crossing Thapa pass, do not attempt it if the wheater is foul. You will be caught in a perfect whiteout and the trail is only sparsely marked. Do not underestimate the walk down Thapa pass, you remain at almost 5000m altitude for a long time, breaking trail in deep snow is hard work at this altitude and although the general direction is down, there are some sections where you have to gain altitude temporarily.

Dhaulagiri (8167m) is one of the 14 mountains higher than 8000 meters. Long distance views are best from Ghorepani and the way down to Tatopani. Most impressive nearby views from Tukuche, Largung and Kalopani.
Room view at the Dutch Bakery in Tukuche.

Beautiful one day trips from Tukuche and Larjung
