You know the dilemma: Your check-out is at 10 or 11 am, but your departing flight isn't until mid-to-late afternoon. What should you do in the intervening hours so you're not wasting vacation time sitting in an airport?

This beautiful, medium-sized botanical garden is right next to PBI airport. In fact, if you're taking kids there who are likely to be unimpressed by plants, trees, turtles, koi, and scurrying anole lizards, they may be regularly entertained by the loud airplanes and helicopters regularly flying overhead.

Given the botanical garden's location, I recommend that the garden administration establish some sort of luggage storage policy (perhaps with a modest fee per bag). We were lucky enough to have a kind volunteer offer to store our small carry-on suitcase behind her desk as we spent a couple of hours in the garden. But no traveler can count on that, especially if they have more than one small bag.

Tip: This can be tempting after looking at a map, but no, you won't want to walk to the airport entrance from the botanical garden, especially with luggage. We were feeling a little crazy and tried this on an adventuresome whim. We enjoyed seeing dozens of iguanas on the long walk, but the sidewalks were mostly unshaded, and we arrived at check-in even sweatier than expected. We should have summoned an Uber/Lyft/taxi or checked for a bus.

I really wanted to like this experience. I enjoy Mounts botanical garden and thought it would be fun to see their Christmas display.
Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the weak display of lights for the price we paid.
It's an awful lot of money to spend to see a couple lights wrapped around random trees.
Don't waste your money as you can find a nice neighborhood to walk through for free

While on a family trip to West Palm Beach from New Jersey we were staying a the Embassy Suites West Palm Beach Central very close to the airport. With just one day free (a Sunday) to visit some local attractions I looked for someplace close by and inexpensive. While searching online, I found the Mount Botanical Garden located off North Military Trail right next to the airport. Just a few minutes car ride from our hotel. It was open on Sundays from 9 AM to 3PM.

The Mount is West Palm Beach's oldest and largest botanical garden with a 40 year history. It is 16 acres of tropical and subtropical plant life with more than 6,000 species on display. Cost to tour the garden is just $12/adults, $10/person for seniors(>65 years old), $5 for 6 to 12 year olds and free for those under six. We were four seniors so it only cost us $10/person.

You start your tour at the garden store where you pay for admission and pick up a tour map. You can also buy plants, gardening tools and jewelry here. You will need the map because the layout of the garden can be a bit confusing as you wander through each section. The garden is well worth exploring and cheap at $10/person. There are lots of great spots to take candid photos.

The garden contains a impressive display of tropical plant life surrounding by a lake filled with lily pads and stocked with black, white and orange carp. Short walking bridges cross the lake. There are 25 unique garden displays – such as the Garden of Tranquility made of stone, wood and natural plants and influenced by Indonesian, Chinese and Japanese culture. Large modern art work is sporadically placed throughout the garden.

As we walked through we saw lots of toddlers enjoying the place with their parents and grandparents. While this looks like a great spot to sit and mediate in silence amid the plants. Any silence you hoped for would be ruined by the constant take off and landing of airplanes from the nearby airport. On a positive note the sight of airplanes overhead would be entertaining for the gardens many younger visitors or plane enthusiast.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the garden and made the garden shop our last stop of our journey. We bought jewelry as gifts for our adult kids back home – a turtle shaped dish and a pineapple bracelet. Our garden tour took about 1.5 hours.

Many gardens laid out along a walking path by water, lovingly tended by volunteers! Different featured exhibits: amazing orchids 1x, Sculptures out of plastic & junk another time that called attention to how humans are trashing the planet. Lectures by naturalists about native trees & plant care. Wonderful place!

Nice Place. Make sure you take insect repellent. The airport can be a bit noisy but otherwise it's worth a visit.

This place took my breath away! 2 rainbow trees, 2 baobab trees, a banyan tree, many types of bamboo, many many flowers, all in all, an incredible experience. Most plants nicely labeled!

Lovely gardens with several shady areas; the people working were very accommodating. It took us about an hour to walk the entire place; many plants/trees are labelled but a good number are not. It would be nice for non-Floridian visitors if more plants were named. Watch for the lizards (big ones) near the small water area where there are very large koi and lots of turtles to be seen. Very small gift shop; we wished they had more plants for sale.

Smaller botanical garden with great view of private planes flying overhead :) Decently laid out, easy to follow pathways, not too much in the way of whimsy (i.e. not Naples Botanical), worth a wander but not a must see. Note - the picture gallery above contains many shots of the Ann Norton sculpture garden is this is not - that's in West Palm too and is really (!!) worth seeing.

The gardens near the airport are well worth a visit. You can walk the paths to all of the special places in about 1 1/2 hours. It was not crowded at all when we visited.

This was a really nice botanical garden with a Rainbow Eucalyptus. Lots to see, and nice areas to stop in.
