New barber
Jun 2019 • Solo
I visited Bilburs today for my first haircut in Vero after just moving here in April. I am extremely happy with both my haircut and the barber, Mark, who was GREAT. Definitely will be my barber as long as live here. Fantastic service and very helpful with ideas if things to do and places to visit here in town. I went in with little regard for several of the other bs reviews. Great place

Refused service because I had a service dog
Jul 2018 • Solo
I was refused service because I was with my service dog. My dog, although not required by law to do so, wears a vest that clearly identifies her as a service dog.
When I walked in, one of the barbers told me, “You can’t bring that in here.” I told her, “Of course I can, she’s a service dog.” She told me she’d have to check with the owner. She called him, talked to him for a bit, then asked me, “Do you have a card for your dog?” I told her I didn’t, because service dog cards are made up nonsense. She then gave the phone to me. He asked me, “Why do you have a service dog?” I told him that I have her because I have PTSD. His response was, “The State Barber Board doesn’t consider that a disability, you can only bring a dog into the shop if you’re blind or have a real physical disability that requires a dog.” That’s so crazy I don’t even know where to begin.

You can’t ask me for a card for my dog. According to the ADA, In situations where it is not obvious that the dog is a service animal, staff may ask only two specific questions: (1) is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? and (2) what work or task has the dog been trained to perform? Staff are not allowed to request any documentation for the dog, require that the dog demonstrate its task, or inquire about the nature of the person's disability.
It is illegal under Federal law for anyone to require documentation of a team. Many disabled individuals choose to provide a vest for their Service Dog and/or carry identification, however it is not required that they do. You may encounter a disabled individual who chooses to keep their disability private.

After explaining this, and him still being super rude, I chose to take my business elsewhere.

You were not refused service sir! We were enforcing the Florida Statutes as it pertains to Barbershops as you were not deaf, blind or physically disabled as we can be fined or forced to close for noncompliance with the statute.

Terrible Barbershop
Jul 2015
The service at Bilbur's is terrible. Naturally a five year old child is going to move around a bit during a haircut.....Bilbur went as far as to ask, "Is he autistic or something?", when cutting my little brothers hair. My little brother is not disabled mentally or physically in anyway and even if he was a person with some sort of disability you don't ask with frustration and malice if someone has autism.

Thank you for this opportunity to apologize to all of our future clients who bring in uncooperative children who clearly do not want any part of getting a haircut in our award winning barbershop. We provide Professional services to a very diverse clientele of all ages and demographics. Inspite of your expectations and our best intentions, a uncooperative child poses a danger to himself and the barber as very sharp implements are in use. In an attempt to appease your child we do ask questions that are meant to help us understand the motive or rational for the child's behavior. Fighting to get out of the chair is a danger in itself. In no way are the questions we ask meant to hurt anyones feelings or ego. There is no malice or disrespect intended as most parents will gladly inform us of any malady the child is experiencing. Parents should realize that the barber will do his/her best to appease your expectations, but when a child is sick, hungry, tired, cranky, stubborn or is simply used to getting their way, then all bets are off and the child wins and in this case at the at the expense of the barber and Barber Shop's reputation. Thus the parent or responsible adult uses a medium such as this to display their disappointment. How children act in public is the direct result of what is taught and learned in the home. We cannot apologize for that. It is our sincerest hope that your child is better prepared for his next visit to the Barber Shop, a place where boys become men!

Nice time and a great haircut
Feb 2015 • Friends
I live within walking distance of Bilbur's and stopped in with a neighbor of mine last week to get haircuts and a shave. The store is clean and neat with plenty to read if you don't want to watch what is on one of the televisions. There is a pool table there as well is that is what you are into. Bilbur went over a couple of different things we could do with my hair as I was looking to change to style up a little bit. I got a great new haircut and was very happy with the shave I got too. Trimmed up the goatee and even did the eyebrows. My buddy was also very happy with his haircut AND get this, my friend is handicapped and Bilbur offered to come by the house and take care of his shave and haircuts for him when he was ready for his next one. That is great customer service and I am looking forward to my next haircut. Nice job Bilbur.

Was that a close shave?
Apr 2014 • Solo
I heard great things about Bilbur's, how it recreated old time barber shop atmosphere with quality, upscale services. Their website states, "With over 35 years experience, we specialize in bringing you a perfect haircut, with old fashioned customer service, in a modern atmosphere."

I called for an appointment and got Bilbur, the owner. Looking forward to the experience, I got into the chair and asked for a haircut. just above the ears, and a hot shave.

The ambiance was great, Bilbur seemed jovial enough, though definitely over talking his barber's qualifications and how well he compared to all the other barbers in town. There is an lcd TV you can watch while in the chair and he actually has Playboys in the waiting room, though they are kept in a rack mounted high on the wall to keep them out of the reach of minors. There is not, however, a mirror that you can use to monitor your cut's progress.

Bilbur finished with the cut and reclined the seat in prep for the shave. The hot towel felt great and he more dabbed the shaving cream on my face rather than lathering me up. The blade seemed to drag a bit on my face, but not having had very many hot shaves I felt this could just be my perception. Bilbur finished the shave, put aftershave on and sat me up. I still had stubble on my face!

Then he gave me a mirror. Perhaps it was Bilbur's years of service but the cut looked like I should be a solder, not a hip, 60 something business man! (haha) I don't think my hair was this short since I was 10.

Still it looked ok at the shop, though way to short, but as with any cut the proof is the next day. It failed. The hair would not lie down. The part had to be in a very particular place (not where I usually part my hair) or else the long hairs that normally go over the top of my head hang down over the short (really short) hairs.

It has been a couple of weeks and the cut has softened somewhat, but it will still be a while before I can go elsewhere, and elsewhere it shall be. I just shaved with my electric razor without stubble.

What a bummer, I was looking forward to so much more.

Didn't get t the cut i wanted, poor attitude and completely arrogant.
I came in looking for a quality haircut. Told the owner/barber how I would like the cut. Didn't give me what I wanted, and had a terrible attitude. I have been to many quality barber shops in the past. With the exact same style. The service provided was mediocre at best. Would not recommend this shop to anyone, unless they get a cut from anyone but the owner. Reguardless of how i felt, still tipped accordingly, but never returned. Have a hard time believing this place could get a 4 star rating on tripadvisor. Pretty low class for such a high rating.

This is not a valid review as this business is not scheduled to begin operation until April 1st! We do understand that we may not be able satisfy those who do not want to be satisfied.
