When you take Centanial Trail, the history of the wildlife refuges is emblazoned on the boardwalk (check out North Dakota). An easy walk with plenty to see. We didn’t go on the other trails because of the August heat, but we would definitely return in...More

Pelican Island Wildlife Refuge is Americans first ever wildlife refuge. It was created in 1903. Excellent trail systems to allow viewing of a myriad of birds. The "Jungle Trail" roadway is a nice drive through the refuge to those that don't or can't make any...More

Such a great thing that this land has been protected and restored. Walk out the short 3/4 mike Centennial Trail to watch the Pelicans swooping down and dropping into the water after they prey. Sensational. Pleasantly surprised to find the public bathrooms, while small, had...More

Lovely walk with interesting facts to learn along the way. The distance to the observation tower is not too far and the view of the island, river and lagoon is worth the walk.

Being Vero Beach residents, we often take out-of-town visitors to Pelican Island for a short, comfortable trail walk through the Refuge and past the pond to the overlook. There are usually shore birds, ducks and butterflies to see along the way, but rarely anything more...More

Free activity with plenty of parking. Took short trail to overlook of Pelican Island. Saw birds and butterflies. Would not go out of my way to visit this refuge, but it was very nice to stop by there with my mom, who especially enjoyed seeing...More

Very rustic. Nice walk to a look out past a pond. Pretty level. Can use a stroller or other wheels. Saw birds mostly. Walkway has listings of each national wildlife preserves by year established because this was the first.

A truly wonderful walk. I myself, unfortunately, went right after a spring rain and the mosquitoes were storming so I had to run back to the car and leave.

I have never seen that. But I assume that no dogs on a leash would mean no dogs at all. Call the office there to ask them is your best choice of course.
