On a recent “Tourist in My own State” expedition for Single Lady Adventures.com I visited a beautiful piece of old Florida- Casey Key at Nokomis Beach near the Venice Beach area of Florida.
Venice Beach is a quaint little area south of the Bradenton/Sarasota area across the skyway bridge from Pinellas County. There are no High rises or big chain hotels here.
The folks at Sail Venice offer several two-hour cruise opportunities throughout the day where you can head out onto the Gulf including a Sunset Cruise. I choose the 10 AM sail and it was perfect.
We met the vessel “Inspiration” a Hunter 30 and her crew, Captain Dove and First Mate Tim Barrat at the designated slip #10, dockside at the Crow’s Nest Restaurant 1968n Tarpon Center Drive, Venice, Fl. 34285.
Captain Dove and First Mate Tim were a fun couple. We learned while talking to them that they have been married 41 years! I could tell they had been doing this for a while because First Mate Tim knew what Captain Dove needed even before she asked.
Captain Dove navigated us out of the harbor and out to the open water and then the winds took us south. It was BEAUTIFUL! Just the sun, the wind, the waves, and great conversation.
It was a fabulous way to spend two hours celebrating the peace and tranquility of our beautiful Shores

We had our son & daughter-in-law with us and we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Dove & Tim make an expert team, synchronizing the sailing effortlessly, while making sure their guests are safe, as well as their possessions & serving them whatever they would like to drink along with cheese & crackers. We felt that this couple take pride in the service they offer & enjoyed sharing the joys of sailing these waters with their guests. We thoroughly recommend SailVenice!!

We had the good fortune to book a sunset sail with Sail Venice. My husband, stepdaughter, and myself thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent aboard the Inspiration. Captain Dove and Mr. Tim were excellent hosts, seeing to any request we might have along with sharing stories and fun conversation. They are a wonderful couple. Our 2 hours on the water was so relaxing as we sailed along the shoreline. They made sure to inform us of conditions (3ft chop), giving us the option to reschedule. Thankfully we didn't, as all had improved and our sail was glorious! The Inspiration is a well equipped, well maintained pleasure. With only a 6 guest maximum, it was easy to 'social distance'! I can't wait to sail with them again.

Absolutely amazing outing with Sail Venice!! Of all the options of things to do I would highly recommend this!! We contacted them via email late on Friday evening and they responded almost immediately and had us booked on the 10:00 a.m. for Monday morning that we requested. There was plenty of parking when we arrived and the boat was easy to find. They allowed us to sail the boat while they coached us through it and taught us how to read the sail and the wind.... absolutely amazing! The boat was extremely clean and well maintained and they had plenty of snacks and drinks aboard. Will definitely go back and take our friends!!

Excellent sail on a very comfortable boat. Got to take the helm and loved it. This is a real sailing experience, not a motor boat with non operating sails. Lovely experience. Dove and Tim are excellent sailors and gracious hosts.

A delightful way to spend a couple of hours. Last year we took an afternoon sail and this year we took a sunset cruise and it was beautiful. The owners are very nice and wonderful hosts. We were provided with drinks and snacks on a very relaxing sailboat. And you can't beat the view!

My husband and I went and we were first to board. We were told we would need to sit up front because the other party had 4 people and would sit in the back. We were out on our own up there. Tim checked on us several times but the captain never said a word until we were getting off the boat and then she told us to keep our drink coozie (free advertising). One thing I was excited to do was steer the boat like their website mentions but being ostracized up front did not allow us that option instead I got to watch the other group steer. The lean was so much we were drenched and on the way back my husband asked them to help move me to a side seat because 2 hours at a 45 degree angle had killed both our backs and being so drenched we were scared to stand on the deck. My advice don’t go as a party of two you don’t get equal treatment

Tim and Dove are the ideal crew and hosts ... friendly, easy to talk to, and highly knowledgeable in the art of sailing. They have a unique and extensive experience sailing in the local waters which we felt maximized our sailing adventure. Prices are reasonable and the views are spectacular. The ship is remarkably comfortable given the wide seats and extra seating and railing cushions. It was a chilly day (low 60s) but they provided us with blankets. The complementary beverages and snacks are welcome feature. I live in the area and will be returning many times over when friends and family come to visit.

Just got off this sailboat with our family, and it was a great trip and great experience!! Highly recommend it, there are multiple places to sit, they provide drinks and snacks, and they know exactly what they’re doing. They’re so friendly, professional, experienced, and laidback. My favorite part was sitting at the bow of the boat in a bean bag chair and getting splashed by the waves.

I booked our trip through Tim (via email), he was really great and answered all my questions beforehand. I have a 2 1/2 year old son so I wanted to make sure this was safe for him too. When we arrived Tim and Captain Dove were so nice, super laidback and very comfortable with my son and us on their boat. It was an absolute wonderful experience and we cannot wait to come back soon. They provided drinks, cheese and crackers, cookies, it was 5 stars.

Is the boat hard to get into

You do have to step down to get in but the captain and her husband will assist you. No one in our party had any problems but it may depend on if you have any disability that would impede you.

How long/big is the sailboat and how many guests does it hold?

Not sure of the length but the max number of passenger I believe they said was 10, which would be fairly crowded.

How much should I expect to spend for a sail for my family of 5?

Call them because they might negotiate but I paid $65 pp for 4 people but it was extremely important to me to be the only one on the boat as my sister-in-law has cancer and could get ill do I wanted the flexibility of coming in if she did. They are good people and will work with you.
