Not museum-quality collections
Jun 2021
As others have noted, the museum is difficult to find. Further, i would argue that it isn't really a museum at all - merely a couple of rooms on one floor and a hallway on another that have photos displayed.

The exhibits we saw were lackluster. They do not have a permanent collection so it's a crapshoot as to what you will see when you go there. The descriptions accompanying the photos we saw in one exhibit were very strident with a particular viewpoint, which we didn't care for. IMO, art (including photography) should allow the viewer space and consideration to come to their own conclusions or interpretation, and not hit them over the head with a particular way to view it.

For these reasons, I don't think we will go back. Probably the worst "photographic" collection I've paid money to see.

Just so so

Museum is very small. The exhibits were thought provoking, but minimal. It took less than one hour to see it all at a slow pace.

Probably won't go again
Jun 2021
It is difficult to find because it's in a large building with other businesses and there is no clear marking.
Unlike most other museums, there is no permanent collection. Exhibits change periodically. Some are more interesting than others.

Small but well done

It’s a small exhibit but well displayed. I look forward to keeping an eye on future exhibits and visiting again. My only advice would be to sort out access to the museum. When I arrived the elevator wouldn’t take you up too the museum which occupies the second and third floors of the building in which it is located. The security guard didn’t really have much of an idea outside of thinking the museum was closed for a special event. I had to call the museum’s number and a young fellow came down to escort me up. He said the security was on for some reason and they had to escort each guest up one by one. There should have been a sign posted at the elevators.

Good for a short visit
May 2021
While the exhibits were interesting, it was a most difficult venue to find. We walked to what we assumed was the address. There is no building number on the building. We concluded that since the address was 400 N Ashely and we were standing between the street signs between 500 and 300, that we were in the right location.

We had four tickets for 12 PM which is when the museum opens. I tried calling them from 11:40 on to try to determine if we were at the right place and where the entrance was. We walked completely around the building, looking on each door for signage. There was nothing to indicate that the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts was in this building. All doors were also locked. We asked a number of people in the area. They had no clue. The corner signage that supposedly indicates the building tenants did not list the museum - or the address.

We were at the point where we didn't know what to do. I kept calling but got the message they are unable to accept any calls. We finally saw someone who looked like a security person walking by where we were standing and asked him. He told us the entry was just around the corner. We told him we had tried that entrance but it was locked. He said it isn't unlocked until 12:00 PM and he had just unlocked it at about 11:57. So we walked around to the entry and sure enough, it was now open. For the first time by the elevators in the lobby we saw signage for the museum, stating it was on the 2nd floor. We called for the elevator, it arrived and the doors opened. We went into the elevator and pressed #2. The doors closed but it didn't appear that we were moving. I pressed the open door button and we exited into the lobby where we had just been. I tried calling the museum once again. Got the same message. I kept trying at finally at noon exactly, they answered, telling me that not only did they not answer calls until noon, the elevators didn't work until then either.

So it seems like 12 was the magic number - entry doors unlocked, elevator operation, phone answered. Which makes it all the more frustrating for the 20 minutes we tried finding out if we were in the right place - no building number and no signage. When I mentioned all of this to the receptionist, she said she thought there was a sign outside. When I asked her where, she pointed right out the window of the second floor. I tried explaining that when we were looking for identification, we were looking at the doors, not at the second floor level.

Because of the difficulty as described above, it is hard to give this an enthusiastic review. The exhibits were interesting but not outstanding.

You can do better!

The museum experience was NOT GOOD. First of all.. there are literally NO signs pointing to where the museum is located. So we called... I think that the person you have working as a receptionist should
Know basic directions on how to get to the business she works at... she had no idea. Her only description was “we are in like... a glass cube” (they were not in a glass cube). After wandering around for another 15-20 minutes I called again... the receptionist was not helpful again. Finally we entered a random building that had no signs on the door and ALAS! We had found it! We made our way to the front desk and showed the receptionist our tickets... she glanced at them and said “you’re good” and then went back to her work.. so I asked “can you tell us where to start? Or like.. advise us on which way to go” (we had never visited before) she said “ya basically you just walk around this floor.. there are exhibits upstairs too” and that was that. The Art at the museum was lovely but there was very little of it.. unless we missed exhibits... which is possible since we had no idea where to go or the layout of the museum. I would not waste the $20 per ticket.

A lovely place while waiting for a plane (free)

This free visit was a very nice surprise to find. I loved it. Though I don't remember the name of the artists, it was educational to see different media in the exhibition.

Hard to find
Dec 2019
It was our first time to Tampa, and we overcame Google map misdirection, absolutely no signage on the outside of the building, and a broken elevator in the lobby before finally arriving at the museum. The exhibits were nice, but seemed small in comparison to the admission charge.

Glad to Have Visited Once, But Probably Not Again
Dec 2019
We purchased discounted tickets through another platform, and I am glad we did. Three of us went and we were finished in less than a half an hour. The "Day to Night" exhibit was impressive and I very much enjoyed looking at all of the little details in each portrait. We did have the opportunity to stay for a poetry experience later in the afternoon, however after reading the skits being taped to the walls, we decided to pass. Also included was an exhibit with photography from the late 1950's-1970's. It was a neat glimpse into the past.
