A hidden gem
Sep 2020 • Solo
Today played the USF golf course, ‘The Claw’. Greens in great shape. Course itself is old and narrow with moss hanging from oaks on either side. Some water but not problem. Be prepared for Covid adjustments but not problem. Heat/humidity means carry water. Lost 6 lbs and 2x that in golf balls. Great pace play. I did 18 in 3+ hours. Not bad for $25.

Duffers Course

We like playing here because of the layout. Be prepared for slow play. Some of the times you get people who are not really good golfers in front of you. They don't understand the pace of play or how to be courteous. Yesterday (12/8/18) it took us 4hrs and 45min to play 18 holes.

Nice golf course.

I play there on Saturdays. Couse is in pretty good shape, some of the green need work. But over all for an weekend duffer it's a pretty challenging course. The price is great, they give discounts for military and first responders.

Too good for us!

This course is attached to a university which offers golf scholarships for talented young players, so it is difficult. Long holes, plenty of trees and quite a lot of water made this the toughest of the nine courses we played on thi s trip.

Not a true representation of our golfing experience!

The price they charged my wife and me was not fair when the greens had been recently aerated and sanded, a couple of holes water over the cart paths, we were told it was cart path only "after we had paid" all of this should have been disclosed over the phone when making the tee time.

Good place get in round
Apr 2016 • Friends
The Claw is a good place to get in round of golf. It's not the best course in Tampa, but has a great layout. The fairway and tee boxes need some work and the greens can be inconsistent. The staff is usually made up of students and they are super friendly. The driving range is okay, irons only. The short game practice area is really nice. Beverage service on the course is good. They serve a good selection of beer (I don't drink) according to my buddies.

Footgolf course was poor
Apr 2016 • Couples
I was very glad to find that The Claw opened a footgolf course about a year ago, and had been looking forward to playing it.

At almost every hole, I was disappointed by the course:

- Tee areas inconsistently placed both with regard to the golf tee locations and the footgolf map that shows where the tees are/were/should be.

- Holes is a misnomer since every hole either had slightly raised ground around it, or the lip of the plastic hole-liner was above the ground level. I could fit my fingers under the plastic lip on many holes.

- Starter nor club house staff knew anything about the footgolf course. Starter told us to look for wooden hard-to-find posts. They are actually dark green plastic tubes poking out of the ground. Very hard to spot! Dark green pipe on dark green grass?!

- Flags marking the holes were dark red / maroon in color, making then hard to see, especially when placed in the shade. Golf flag poles are white, why not the footgolf flag pole? Just use different flag colors for the different games.

- Location of the footgolf holes are a shoddy afterthought. On more than one hole, you essentially had to play along a tree line or asphalt path. The fairways should be for both games! This was absolutely pathetic. Other examples included playing in the rough from tee to hole.

Weak from start to finish, though all of these criticisms could be fixed. PLEASE fix it, management. I'd love to play there again if this simple fixes are done. Seriously, I didn't see what I was paying money for on this course.

"The Claw Never Disapoints"

Played The Claw recently, and I am always impressed at how true the greens are, how challenging it is, and how well maintained it is. A true gem for the price. We will be back.

Rough shape
Mar 2016 • Friends
This is a difficult course with tight fairways and requires a variety of shot making. The course is in rough shape. It was often difficult to find a patch of grass in the tee box to hit off of.

Great challenge- nice test of your skills
Feb 2016 • Couples
The Claw is a very good test of your shot making. The several holes feature narrow fairways lined with trees. There is enough sand and water to keep you honest. The course from the tips is 6863 yds.with a 135 slope and 73.6 rating. The ladies play over 5353 yds with a slope of 117 and 70.8 rating. Most guys will pay from the gold, 126/71 at 6288 yds. The course was in pretty good shape considering we played in Feb. Very few hours are just straight so shot making is at a premium. If you spray your drives, you may not score well or want to play here. There is a restaurant on site. They have a driving range and a practice green. You can walk but most ride. The staff was friendly and helpful. We will definitely play here again.
