The opera performance was great but my night was ruined by extremely cold air conditioning in the balcony and an usher who stood in the aisle blocking my view of performers taking bows at the end of the act. I politely suggested he stand off to the side until the bows were completed but he rudely said that it was... More

My introduction to Sarasota was on the very first night I visited in 2000, I walked up to the box office bought a ticket and was hooked ever since. We had a subscription at Chicago's Lyric for years, have attended operas in other cities, even other countries and our Opera company is truly top drawer. Tonight we attended Madame Butterfly... What a wonderful production! The set was an absolutely beautiful Japanese home and they did wonderful things with the lighting. The soprano (Butterfly) and tenor (Pinkerton) had excellent voices that filled the theater and had the audience thrilled. A must see if you are in the area. The theater itself is fantastic, no bad seats and a lovely intimate theater... More

This is a small opera house, relative to NYC, SF and the European houses. Nevertheless, acoustics and cast excellent. Wonderful experience, will return!

The first time in Sarasota back in 2000, I was lucky enough to buy a ticket the night of a performance at the box office. I was blown away. After being a subscriber to Lyric in Chicago for many years I was spoiled by one of the best opera companies in the world. What I have seen since that fateful... More

Over the last twenty years the Sarasota Opera has defined itself as one of the finest companies in the country if not the world. Just this year they became one of the few companies big or small to have performed all the works of Verdi. But I think more importantly it is a venue that welcomes a wide variety of... More

The epitome of Sarasota's Verdi cycle, Aida was an excellent introduction to high-quality music. Thankful for the "sub-titles." Good singing, Good orchestra, good scenery. Not a bad seat in the house. Pricey but worth it.

Saw a lesser known opera of Verdi yesterday (The Battle of Legnano) and enjoyed it very much. One of the three main singers withdrew due to illness, so we were not sure what to expect. His replacement was excellent, however, and drew quite a round of applause from the audience afterwards. We've been to a number of performances at the... More

Costuming and set lend themselves to great "stage pictures" for every act. Voices are flawless, with exceptional chorus work, Aida herself, and several others. On the negative side, the orchestra overshadowed the singers in the first act and Radames has a difficult time with his facial expressions. An excellent production for the neophyte. For a longtime picky opera lover like... More
