GREAT INFORMATION CENTER
Oct 2020
The chamber of comm. is located on you right just after getting off the bridge. They have all kinds of folders from dining to sightseeing. They have a shovel outside the door to remove any snow. Loads of information.

Even if you have been to Sanibel/Captiva many times, you may find new information, or at least coupons for dining. They have lots of information, both paper and with interactive computer displays. There was also a help desk and he was ready, and willing, to answer any questions. Lots of free parking and easy to get to....on the right just as you get onto the island.

A Island Must Do
Sep 2020
The Sanibel/Captiva Visitor Center is a must for visitors. It's located just over the bridge onto Sanibel Island. The Center is immaculate including the restrooms. It's manned with knowledgeable locals who can tell you all about your visit here especially the parking which is problematic on Sanibel Island. Plenty of information is available for anything you are looking for on Sanibel Island and Captiva. Highly recommended especially for day trippers.

Where would be the best spot for shelling? And is there parking in the shelling areas?

Can you rent a bike and ride around the island on your own? I'd like to do so as I will be visiting alone and would like to explore the island, and stop here and there along the way. Where do I go to find the bikes? Roughly what is the cost? Thanks in advance!

It's very easy to get around most of the island on bike. Check out Billy's Rentals online for rates.

Beaches are great. Good restaurants. Shelling good if you are interested. Really the best shelling in the US

First time visitors coming in eat my October. Just wondering if the wildlife is still active during this time. We are interested in the darling refuge and dolphin excursions. Also would this time be considered your "slow season"? Thanks!

Very good time to visit because you will be past the truly hot period of summer. So I would not call this off season but the snowbirds from up north USA and Canada don't usually come until it is cold in their home areas. Ding Darling has wild life most of the year.

Where is the best place to park? How much does it cost? please and thank you!

Parking at the Chamber for the visitor center is for 20 minutes and is free. There is free parking at restaurants, businesses, shopping and attractions on Sanibel and Captiva.
If you are going to one of our public beach access parking lots, the cost is $4 per hour at the kiosk in each lot. The kiosk takes exact change and credit cards. The receipt that the machine gives you goes on your dashboard while you are parked for the beach.

We stayed in Fort Myers at a Homewood Suites, that was not near the beach. This worked for us, but made it difficult if you want to be at the beach every day. Going to the beach in this general area tended to be a real pain for us, as parking is generally pay by the hour and facilities are not guaranteed. This area was a let-down to me and i wouldn't return for a vacation.

Is there a beach that does not have the green algae on Sanibel or Captiva? I noticed yesterday a little of it was washing ashore off West Gulf.

Thank you for your email. SCCF and the City of Sanibel will send out information immediately if Sanibel or Captiva beaches are affected by algae.
