    Facinating sight.
Went here on a visit to the island with friends recently. The beach is still being worked on as is the lighhouse which was fenced off for visitors at the time of our visit in Octomer 23. There is still lots of work to do here after hurricane Iain last year but that did not stop us parking nearby and walking along the shell beach to see the sights. If you go in the evening watch out for the no-see-ums and chiggers as their bites can be very nasty and can take many days to come out fully.

Not worth the time it took!
Warning!!!! Traffic getting off of Sanibel Island takes HOURS! It took us 3 1/2 hours to get off the island! Although the beach and lighthouse were nice, it was not at all worth the hours it took just to get back to the mainland. Until the causeway is restored, my recommendation is DONT GO!

This was a trip to prove two things. To find another lighthouse to mark off my list of so many I have yet to visit and to find out if the area was the seashell capital of the world. The best time to visit is early in the morning, before the traffic on the causeway and island drives you crazy. When you travel alone like I do, getting on the road at 6 am is easy to do. Although it was a hunt, I found the lighthouse, shot a few pictures with my 35 mm camera and made my way to the other side of the island for a class on shelling. Unlike a child, I used a regular mop bucket for my shell collecting because I knew I would spend the day searching up and down the beach for all types of shells to take home. The informal class was fun and only increased my desire to learn more about seashells, the animals and ocean life. Tip-There are so many shells on the beach and in the water that beach shoes will save your feet from many jabs, pokes and cuts!

Since I'm from the Northeast, it was fascinating to see such a different style lighthouse.

We rode our bikes, so there was no parking fee involved. The beach is not sandy, it is "shelly!" We were grateful that the crowds were moderate. A gentleman had his easel and was painting away, A photographer was enjoying capturing images of birds with a super duper telephoto lens. Others mingled as we enjoyed the calm of the water.

All in all, the experience was sweet and relaxing.

Parking was so expensive. $5 minimum 2 hours, beach was crowded and the shells hurt your feet before you got in the water. The water was clear and shells were lovely to collect. No waves so safe for children. NO lifeguards. Saw lighthouse from this distance. I live on Long Island parking is expensive but $9 (retiree) all day. No shells, but waves can be treacherous, but we have lifeguards. It was a fun place to visit.

This lighthouse might not be what people have in mind when they think of lighthouses, but it is considered worth a visit while on Sanibel. It is a metal frame lighthouse. It costs $5 to park no matter how long or short your visit is. A short walk will take you to the lighthouse and some buildings which are old Florida-style cottages that are unoccupied/not in use. They used to be rentals & at least one had a name on it. The city/island should consider renting them again because it's looks like it would be interesting to stay in one of them. All of this is fenced in so visitors can't walk up close to the lighthouse or cottages.
Make sure you go down to the beach (path through some bushes) which is very nice. The beach is very clean with sugary sand and there were several women shelling. There were children swimming in the water so it looks pretty safe for swimming. Bottle nose dolphins can sometimes be seen in this area. It is also a good place for birdwatching as it is a sea bird habitat. Being on the beach gives another view of the lighthouse.
Be aware of the tides as it can reduce this small beach into a narrow one. Beach is crowded during summer and weekends. One can walk around the curve in the beach which goes on the far side of the lighthouse and continues on down the island. There is also a fishing pier which seems very popular. My only regret was it was gray & overcast so the light was not the best for photography. Plan to come back some day when it is sunny & also at sunrise & sunset for better lighting for photos.
One can also drive around the loop road directly in front of the lighthouse to take a quick look without stopping (No stopping or parking allowed signs posted, but a couple people stopped anyway.) Nice place for a quick look at the lighthouse or to spend the day swimming, shelling, bird watching and/or fishing.

I love visiting lighthouses and keeper houses but this one you can only drive by. We paid the $5 to park and walk to the lighthouse but then noticed people just drove by it. I’m glad we got out and walked but wish there was more to do then just view the lighthouse. If you want a stamp for your lighthouse passport go back to the visitor center.

The lighthouse here is of an unusual design and well worth a visit. Note that there is free parking for the handicapped. Many people come here to look for seashells and my wife tried but didn't find anything too exciting. Osprey's were nesting on the building adjacent to the lighthouse and there were other birds one could photograph or simply watch. Fishermen seemed to enjoy the pier location.

If you are going to be on Sanibel Island, do visit the lighthouse.

If you are going just to see the lighthouse, don't bother. It is hard to photograph because you come out of the brush right on top of it. There is also no access into the buildings or light as with some lights I've been to. They had the light and buildings decorated very nice for the holidays! Some of the most traditional decorations I saw on the island! The beach there is beautiful and large. There were many people at the beach and yet it did not seem crowded. Not many shells the day we were there but the water was so clear you could see fish and I found a couple starfish to photograph and put back (live). There is also a very nice, large fishing pier there that was in use by many fishermen. Also, nice benches on the pier to sit on and just watch the activities. They have a nice large parking area but there is a $5 per hr parking fee.

Enjoyed my walk. Got to take great pictures. DIdn't want to spend too much time though. Will go back again once bathrooms are open. Its a bit difficult to spend the day there and not be able to use a bathroom. It was a little disturbing to see people hanging, drinking beverages and heading to the water for a few seconds, sit down and then head back up to their blankets. There's a fee to park as well, $5 per hour. I left early because of no bathrooms to use. I saw a few people walk in the fenced off area with toilet paper and then walk back to blanket with no toilet paper. That was kind of gross and felt toilet paper was left in the preserve area.

This is not a lighthouse to climb, only to view from the ground. There is one historical sign. The attraction is the beach since the lighthouse sits on the eastern most point of Sanibel. Parking is a fee, but most folks ride bikes. There are a few interior boardwalks, but walking along the beach is fun.

If you're wanting an Instagram-worthy lighthouse, this isn't it. It's just a metal structure, bare bones really.
The park surrounding it is nice and the history behind the lighthouse is a great story, for those who appreciate history.
It's worthy of a walk if you are staying nearby.
