No longer open across the bridge

This trail has been closed due to the expense needed for repairs and upkeep. You can still fish on the entrance to this trail

Sad its closed...
It's closed... One of the best spots in Tampa Bay. What a waste. I don't see why it needed to be closed, but it is...

The trail/bridge/fishing pier is closed
Jan 2012
This is the original part of the Gandy Bridge from the 1920's. It's falling apart from the salt water corrosion. It's a shame that this great trail is closed and waiting for funds to tear it down which is less expensive than repairs.

Biking is so scary without this trail!
I didn't know the Friendship Trail was out, and I had to bike across on the Gandy to get from Tampa to St. Petersberg. Even though the shoulder is wide, it's still completely terrifying to go over the bridge with highway traffic whizzing by and only a tiny rail, not even as tall as my bike, between me and the water. Not for the faint of heart, cyclists.

Very Sad
The Title of my review is how I feel about this closure. I just found out about this yesterday 5/3/09. I live in Portland, Oregon now and somehow over the net I found a story about this closure. When I lived in Tampa I was at the Friendship Trail at least twice a week for several years. When I moved away I was there several times during my week or two week visit every year. I would walk from the Tampa side to the St Pete side and back at a quick pace for exercise. I loved it, the peacefulness of being so far out in the water yet close to the city was unique in itself. The feel of the warm sun while walking above the water in the middle of winter was unsurpassed . I am not sure any other coastal metro area had such an attraction. Truthfully hearing this news had a very sad impact on me yesterday and now as I think about it. I have to say when visiting Tampa now ,knowing the Trail is closed will feel like there has been the loss of a very good friend. The Friendship Trail will be very missed by people from all over not just residents of Florida. Literally thousands upon thousands of people.

One of the best things ever to happen to the Tampa Bay!
I rode my bike and or walked over this 2.6 mile bridge, at least once a week. It's the only safe way to get across the bay as a pedestrian. 60,000 people biked, bladed, walked, wheelchaired, and fished from it every month,
2,000 a day or more, according to the Parks Department. What a fantastic resource! What a great place to spend 2 or three peaceful hours safe, way out on the water, and close to home. Familys took sunday picnics on it.
Now they have closed it, claiming 'it could fall in to the bay tonight, or twenty years from tonight', no-one knows. This is a travesty. I miss it, 60,000 people a month miss it, the D.O.T. should be shamed, but no one is contesting it. If you did use it, then you will have experiences you will never forget, if you didn't, then that's a shame.
Thank you to all the hard working community volunteers that made this colossal park a reality.

Closed to bike and pedestrian traffic
The trail has recently closed indefinately due to structural problems and there are a lot of upset bikers. They are not sure if it will be repaired and reopened but I wouldn't bank on it. There is a small portion still open to foot traffic on one (maybe both) ends that can be used for fishing.
