We went to the Freefall's first new show since March; "War of the Worlds" and had a great time. Very creative drive-in format musical. As usual, the quality of the actors is excellent. They sounded as if they had been performing together for years.
We just sat in our car but others were tailgating while enjoying the show.
Our only quibble is that there should have been a little more emphasis on War of the Worlds. We loved the preshow music too! Great idea to do well known songs in a completely different style ( think DooWop version of Cindy Lauper's " Girls Just Wanna Have Fun")
Price is right too $75 for up to 4 people/ car. $99 for "premium parking"

Since the Covid virus Freefall Theatre had to close down. Now they started a drive-in with an outdoor stage. The play “The War of the Worlds.” You can hear the play on your cell phone or car radio. Freefall theatre is an awesome place for Covid relief. Please go and see the play you will have a great time.

Since it's opening, my husband and I have gone to Freefall Theater for plays, musicals, comedy, and have always been entertained and felt the standard of theater to be very high. We lived in London for almost a decade and attended theater in the West End to which Freefall easily compares. I have been brought to tears by some of their dramas (one being Light in the Piazza) and we laughed while watching their fantastic science fiction take on The Pirates of Penzance. Added to this easy parking and you have a dream evening on the town. Also, O's Bistro is just down the road if you want dinner before a performance.

First off , it was my first time at this theater. Upon walking in, it felt like I was in someone's garage, stadium seating, and by that I mean ,seating like in a gymnasium , no stage, and no comfy cushioned seats. The play takes place on the cement floor. Everything in the theater is black, black walls, black concrete floor, black seats, and a black ceiling. The performers came out before the play began and started to stretch and go through their movements , practicing their roles, very strange that they would not have a back room to do that in. The play we saw was , Our Town. Their was a narrator that basically told the audience what each scene was going to curtail . Their was no costumes, no backdrops, no special effects, nothing to get excited about. It was extremely boring, so much that we left after the first act. The tickets were not cheap, 90.00 for the two of us. I've been to a lot of theaters to see plays, and never have seen anything quite like this.

Hello dwrn54! Thanks for coming to freeFall and for taking the time to write a review. Our Town, a classic play by Thornton Wilder, is written to occur on a bare stage with no sets, props or special effects -- that's what the script requires and what you'll experience anytime you see the show produced (and it's the most produced show in the American theatre canon!). We hope you'll come back and see another show. freeFall has won numerous awards for our sets, lighting, costumes. Our artistic director is renowned for his innovative approach to live theatre, and many shows here are a feast for all your senses. Thanks again for coming to freeFall, and I hope we can welcome you back soon!

We loved our first visit to freeFall Theater...which almost didn't happen because a hurricane was blowing in that night. We saw Pirates of Penzance (in space!) and have nothing but wonderful things to say about it. The actors were outstanding, their singing voices were exceptional, the musicians were impressive. Everyone seemed to be genuinely enjoying their work. We attend theatre fairly regularly and consider ourselves to have pretty high standards. This was a very clever, very sharp production and we're so glad we didn't miss it.

I've been to several Freefall Theatre productions over the past couple of years, and have never had anything but an exceptional and satisfying theatre experience.

The theatre itself is simple, small, and intimate--something unusual and precious these days. Last Sunday (when Freefall had a Father's Day special--Dad's got in free) our chairs were in the top row, but we still were never more than 30 feet away from the actors, and (because of the smart "pitch" of the risers) we had great sight-lines for the action performed on a rectangular stage viewed "in the round."

Freefall's artistic director is exceptionally talented, so the plays (often musicals), other directors, and casts are always well-chosen, the conception is imaginative and engaging, and the pacing is impeccable.

"Intimate musical theatre" might seem like an oxymoron. Not so--at least not at Freefall.
We saw a little-known play from 2010--"The Burnt Place Boys." It's the story of the consequences on a family of a West Virginia mining disaster, when the mining company is ready to reopen a mine that is the gravesite (the "burnt place") of many of the fathers of the small community. Not your usual musical fare. But the liveliness and passion of the teenaged sons of the miners, their humor, their idealism, and their heroism, completely captivated the audience throughout the two-hour show. And their solos and harmonies in a score based in blue-grass accompanied by a live instrumental group of five, captured the pathos of the story without sapping its beauty and strength.

This is a review not only of this show, however, but of arguably the best little professional theatre in all of the Tampa Bay area! Their production of "Cabaret" went into multiple "encore" performances, thanks to audiences clamoring for more. Another unusual offering, Lorca's "The House of Bernarda Alba" (the musical version) was compelling and effective as it paired the play with flamenco music and dance.

The setting of Freefall Theatre couldn't be better. On the west side of St. Petersburg--a fifteen minute drive from downtown--this little theatre stands alone in a tree-lined half-block, with its own ample parking lot and user-friendly staff and policies.

(I had second thoughts about writing this review only because I want this theatre experience not to change in response to the greater audiences it deserves.)

We just got home from Freefall's production of "An Empty Plate in the Cafe du Grand Boeuf" and it was superb! Filled with humor and pathos, the play makes excellent use of all the actors' talents. We laughed. We empathized. We were captivated. Not only are the actors first-rate, but the staging, scenic design and attention to detail are all Broadway caliber. Don't miss this production. As a sidelight, we have seen several other shows at Freefall, including "Cabaret" and "A Christmas Carol" and they have all been up to this same high standard. St. Petersburg and the entire Tampa Bay Area are lucky to have this addition to the arts community.

The local audience seems to love this place and actively cheers for their favorite performers. This review is based on a single performance and I won't be hurrying back.

This tiny theater which looks like an abandoned school library from the outside is great! Since it’s small there are no bad seats. You have perfect view of the stage no matter where you sit. We saw Daddy Long Legs which was wonderful. The two (and only) performers did a great job. HUGHLY RECOMMEND!
