    Amazing museum
I would never have thought that a western/wildlife museum would be so astounding. I have been to many of the famous museums of the world, and the art here is extraordinary. Remarkable. Many of the work have a photo- realism quality. I felt like I was taken “into” the world of the individual paintings. My two friends felt the same way. This is a museum to go back to time and again. Don’t miss it.

    Surprisingly Excellent
I wasn’t sure what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. Wonderful display of Native American artwork with interesting signage. We’ve been to a number of historical museums and this one ranks right up there with the best. Disappointed we weren’t able to view the special exhibition - members only - especially after paying the $18 entrance fee. It’s not a large art museum, but we ended up spending 2+ hours here. Well worth it.

    A must see
What a find. The exhibits were so interesting and well done. Unusual but very informative. We happened to go in the evening when they were having some musical entertainment in the area off the lobby. That was delightful! And it was right across the street from the Ponce de Leon hotel where we stayed.

During our last year's western US tour, we've visited several such museums in New Mexico and Arizona, which I was overwhelmed with.
Knowing Florida for sun & fun only, I really didn't expect to find such an outstanding museum here.
Being a huge fan of Native American art I had no doubt visiting it. This is an amazing and extensive collection of that kind of art including cowboy and wildlife art as well. Terrific interior hosts stunning sculptures, paintings, jewelry items, etc....
Entry fee is lower than the overrated Dali museum and much more worth it.

I truely enjoyed this museum. I went on $10 Tuesday and was lucky to reserve the last spot in the docent led tour. I highly recommend this, if possible, as the docent's added information was very interesting and added to my appreciation of the beautiful artwork. So many beautiful pieces, but my favorites are the bronze statues and the wildlife art. I like the fact that Mr. & Mrs. James have colllected from, and in turn have supported, living artists, as looking for the artists work will make my future travels more fun. By sharing their personal collection, they have truely "given" St. Petersburg and its visitors something to treasure.

My husband and I spent several hours at the James and enjoyed every second of it. It is a beautiful, well laid out and curated museum that is well worth the trip to St. Pete. The sculpture and paintings are lovely, and the room with the jewelry exhibit is incredible. Wonderful to see all of the different types of Turquoise. My only complaint would be that the gift shop should stock some higher end things instead of so much touristy junk.

A disability limits my mobility, so we called ahead for a wheelchair. Once ambulatory, I had full access to the entire museum. An elevator was a convenient lift as were ramps. I didn’t miss a thing. From the amazingly detailed bronze sculptures to modern day glimpses of Native American life, this collection blew us away. Brilliantly organized and displayed, I was able to photograph many of my favorites without a flash. I was so excited by this display, that I made a photo book accompanied by inspirational quotes from famous Indians. My husband would have purchased a miniature bronze, but the gift shop offerings were limited. All staff were welcoming and helpful. Great visit.

I highly recommend the James Museum. It is a great way to spend a cooler (or very hot) afternoon in St. Petersburg. The art and the architecture are stunning. The architect and curator have done a fabulous job of displaying this wonderful art. It is such a large collection it would require several visits to fully appreciate. After viewing everything or just for a break, visit the antique bar for some refreshment.

A wonderful museum with a wide variety of amazing pieces including spectacular Indian jewelry, amazing sculptures and paintings. A very worthwhile experience. I have been there with my 5-year-old granddaughter starting when she was 3 and she loves it. Children 6 and under are free.

Tuesday evenings are $10 a person and they have entertainment I think one Tuesday evening a month. Adults up to age 35 can get an annual membership for $40.

Museum Parking is available on Levels 3 & 4 of the automated South Core Parking Garage located above the museum. Enter at 101 1st Ave S, St. Petersburg, FL 33701.
The first hour in the garage is free and $1/hour after that. Please note: special event rates vary and may apply.

We had a rainy day and we thought we would try the James Museum. We loved it. We took the 1:30 Docent lead tour and got a very good feel for the entire museum. The docent was well informed and covered the highlights of the entire museum. It is not a large museum so 2-3 hours with the tour is ample time. It is a very well organized museum with collections gathered in rooms by type. The first floor is beautiful and looks like an arroyo. We did not eat but the cafe gets high marks. We will go again with friends.

Went early in the am, smiling staff standing around, was directed to the lockers, then a minute later the fire alarm goes off
Scheduled drill.
Who let's people pay attendance fee them kicks them out for a fire drill. Than acts like they are doing me a favor by getting my coat from the locker after telling me I can't take 10 steps back to get it myself?Keep your glued on smile, I'll take my money and time elsewhere.

Western art has not been the subject that has captured my Museum imagination. But this museum shattered my bias. From the moment you walk into the museum till you leave you are immersed in an experience that is truly American and of the highest quality. Hats off to the City and to the James Family.

The sandstone walls took us back to hikes in Utah. Placing the western art in that setting gave it a truth that would not happen in white walls.

The bronze collection is stunning and not to be missed.

The temporary exhibit by Helen Hardin and the artists of her family and contemporaries was eye candy. This was startling and amazing.

While the docent that led our tour was less than captivating, the the museum rises above any human shortcomings in presentation. Any visitor to the St. Pete beaches area must find time for this museum.

I wasn’t sure I would enjoy this museum as I am not a connoisseur of western art but this is a beautiful collection and a beautiful museum. Striking entrance and lobby. The variety of art objects and subjects is interesting and enjoyable. Some of the works are absolutely stunning and very revealing of how western painters captures American Indian life and cowboy life. I appreciated that the museum also includes a number of contemporary works by American Indian artists. Also interesting to have a bar downstairs near the gift shop. Nice place visitors to take a break when others in their group linger with the artwork. More museums should have one. 😊
