We were first attracted to the James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art by their special exhibit of the works of Ansel Adams and Clyde Butcher. As a fan of Butcher’s work, this was a must-see for me. This exhibit did not disappoint.

The Museum has several permanent galleries depicting western art as well as wildlife art. We throughly enjoyed the wildlife art exhibit. I was also pleased RP to see Frederic Remington’s The Mountain Man on display. A captivating display was John Coleman’s Honeymoon at Crow Fair, depicting a frontier couple on horseback going to the fair. It is set against a waterfall background.

It’s a small museum so it can be a up to couple of hours or longer if you choose to linger. Tuesday admission is only $10 at present.

They had both a Clyde Butcher: America The Beautiful and Ansel Adams: The Masterworks showing. The rest of the exhibits were as absorbing. Nice architecture of the building added to the works inside. On a weekday, you can usually find on street parking right outside. Go on Tuesday for $10.00 admission for all. Docents were mostly friendly and talkative. So much to see. GO!

This is an amazing museum highlighting the works of *living* artists, as is emphasized throughout the facility.

It's a wonderful, seemingly never-ending collection that keeps getting better and better as you walk through the many specifically themed galleries, and the architecture alone - with the sandstone walls - is beautiful and breathtaking from the moment you walk through the doors.

We spent almost 4 hours really taking in all that the museum had to offer (and encourage you to watch the short 8-min intro video offered), and can't wait to return to fully appreciate a few of the other galleries (e.g., Wildlife Gallery, Frontier Gallery) that we didn't have as much time (due to our schedule) to study and absorb on the day we visited.

(Yes, we read everything; we want to fully appreciate the art, the history of the artist, the meaning behind the works, etc.)

We also had a lovely light lunch at the Canyon Cafe. Friendly service and delicious food. We tried the bison burger and the hatch chile chicken street tacos. We also experienced friendly service at the admissions desk, as well as the unique gift shop.

Highly recommend!

We were very pleasantly surprised how great this collection of western art is. Even the building itself is worth seeing. We came for the special exhibit of photos by Ansel Adams and Clyde Butcher (which is really good), then the permanent collection is really worth coming for also. We spent a fun two hours here.

It was interesting to find a museum of western art in south Florida and it is spectacular. The vision of Raymond James to promote and support artists is admirable and a labor of love. He started out with his personal collection displayed in his offices then made the leap to a full museum.
There are a number of artists, mediums and styles represented. The bronze statues are incredible in their detail. The pictures of Ansel Adams are beautiful. He represented Native American tribes across the country.

We spent a couple of hours walking through it and really enjoyed it. I would highly recommend.

There are just too many excellent pieces to take in here in one visit. I can only see so manhy pieces of art before I lose my ability to process them. There are a lot of great pieces of western art here. I loved the concept, the arrroyo, the waterfall, the sandstone everywhere. I really enjoyed the sculptures of Native Americans taken off early paintings by early to mid 19th century artists. This collection is so lifelike it is almost scary. If I lived nearby, I would come in evey Tuesday and try to concentrate on one small section at a time. The James' have done a great job collecting and someone has done a great job of curating. Don't miss this if in the area.

I was not expecting such a massive collection of spectacular western art. We went to see the Ansel Adams exhibit but were more taken back by the amazing Western painting, sculpture, jewelry, and masks on display. We agreed we would return.

We stayed in St. Petersburg Fl and it was a cold day when we were there so we decided to check out the, "James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art." Just by looking at the buildings architecture outside you can tell your in for a treat! When you enter your surrounded by a peaceful ambiance that is very grounding. The Native American flute music flows throughout the large canyon like space as the waterfall exhibit beckons you closer. Your journey has just begun with two floors of masterpieces to explore. I have been to several Native Museums including the "National Museum of the Native Americans" in D.C., but I can tell you this museum really brings forth the "Spirit" of the great American West and the peoples who lived there from the beginning onward. The owners collections include some of the finest paintings by both Nation tribes and Western people, Native jewelry, life like bronze castings, fabric art and wildlife artwork. Plus they have a fabulous gift shop! There is also a very interesting self portrait of the owner with some hidden symbolism interwoven in the piece.
Don't miss this first class museum while in this area....it is worth the drive from Sarasota and Tampa!!
Thank-you to the owners who created this world class museum for generations to come and appreciate. WARNING: You will want to take a trip "Out West" afterwards....

I truely enjoyed this museum. I went on $10 Tuesday and was lucky to reserve the last spot in the docent led tour. I highly recommend this, if possible, as the docent's added information was very interesting and added to my appreciation of the beautiful artwork. So many beautiful pieces, but my favorites are the bronze statues and the wildlife art. I like the fact that Mr. & Mrs. James have colllected from, and in turn have supported, living artists, as looking for the artists work will make my future travels more fun. By sharing their personal collection, they have truely "given" St. Petersburg and its visitors something to treasure.
