Great excuse to to come to the pier
Apr 2021
Not that notable of a collection but good for a rainy day killtime activity. Alternatively, use a visit as an excuse to get down to the pier area, which is very nice, explore after. Nice kids <7 are free. You can park on the street in the area for a max of 2 hours at the meter I was at.

Museum of Fine Arts
Mar 2021
We had a couple of hours to spare in St Pete and decided to go to the Museum of Fine Arts. We hold a reciprocal membership for the last 15 years allowing us admission to over 200 museums throughout North America. But here we were informed that the museum ceased to participate in the program. Which is ok, circumstances change, but the problem is that the museum is still listed as participating. So the management gets the on star, they should have provided the services to the members while the listing is being updated. As for the museum itself we saw it in 2003 and I wasn't overly impressed with its collection. As far as I remeber it is a 3-star museum.

Misled by reviews
Jan 2021 • Solo
This collection is too large for one visit. I’m eager for April’s mosaics from Antioch! I learned so much about other cultures from these many and varied objects.

The Art of the Stage - Nice Exhibit

The Art of the Stage - Nice Exhibit

We were in St. Petersburg for a series of meetings for my wife in March, which meant that I was solo for most of the time. After walking through North Straub Park, I ended up at the Museum of Fine Art, which separates North and South Straub Parks. This structure is tucked in between lovely live oaks and banyan trees, in the park. I had nothing on my agenda, so decided to take in the exhibit, Art of the Stage - From Picasso to Hockney, and I am glad that I did.

Now, the Museum of Fine Art is a lovely building, but one with several architectural facets. Much looks like it is a grand Colonial style building, but as one walks the perimeter, the styles change, up to a very modern glass and steel section. Obviously, different wings have been added at different time periods, and rather than keep everything to the original style, each wing reflects a different take. On one hand, the juxtapositions seem out of character, but when taken as the whole of the structure, and its purpose, it fell into place for me.

The displays are wonderfully done, and were highly informative. Great effort had gone into mounting this exhibit, and I spent well over an hour, just roaming, reading and looking.

If we lived in St. Petersburg, or near by, I have a feeling that we would both be members, and spend a great deal of time in the Museum of Fine Art - a beautiful, if slightly incongruous structure, but a lovely one, with great exhibits. Though I only spent that 90 minutes, one could easily spend half a day, and not be bored.

A few notes:
There is a wheelchair ramp on one side, so the stairs, in the front on Beach St, do not have to be navigated.
In March, there was construction on the south side of the Museum, right at South Straub Park. I am not sure if that was part of the construction that I observed all over South Straub Park, or if the Museum was being expanded? Either way, that construction, beyond the drive-thru portico seemed to have taken up quite a few parking spots, but there was still a lot of parking along both Beach and Bayshore Drives.

We had more time to visit
Mar 2020
We went into this museum late in the afternoon and wished we'd gone earlier. It's a bit eclectic but it's got some lovely displays. Well worth a couple of hours for anyone with an interest in art.

A nice small museum to spend up to 2 hours.

The museum is nice. It has some excellent paintings of American Impressionists that I liked.
I took the docent-led tour which was good.
If you have an hour or two on your hand - this is a recommended place to visit.

Interesting Collection

I have enjoyed seeing the variety of styles of art here from the famous artists. If you have a Bank of America account, admission is free the first full weekend of the month.

A little jewel
Mar 2020 • Couples
This museum has a broad collection of Art. The pieces are expertly curated and beautifully displayed. The building itself makes really good use of light. It’s neither a small museum or a large museum. Museum store is well stocked and tasteful. The museum guards use a light hand. The setting is gorgeous. It is convenient to both the waterfront and Beach Avenue. So a stop here can provide other things to do just outside the door.
