This is a great family trip. We took the 10am ride out and the 12:15pm ride back to the dock. Colleen and Keenan were informative and kept everyone safe. We found tons of shells, saw a manatee pretty close up while we were swimming and saw a dolphin chasing snook on the ride back. For anyone that couldn’t find shells, you have to go out into the water. Use the mask that they give you. Walk around the point and you will find better shells. Most shells on the beach are either broken or picked over. You can stay for a long day if you wish. Bring lunch and beverages. Also bring sunblock since there is zero shade.

We had hoped to find some great shells after paying $25 for about a 5 minute ride to island right off beach. Very disappointing- sand dollars best find., Very nice people running and water at island is pretty, if there for beach, but we went for shells and wish we had saved our money.

we are sorry you did not enjoy your time on shell key. we do tell everyone at check in that it is a 10 min boat ride to the island. our sunset dolphins watching cruise is a 90 minute boat ride for the same price of $25+tax. but that cruise does not stop at shell key. Shelling does vary from day to day with the tides and the seasons. Very glad you were able to find some sand dollars.

We took the Shell Key Shuttle at 10am on a Monday morning in May. Two adults and our 19 year old son. $25 per person seemed a bit expensive for a 10 minute ride over to Shell Key, but we had fun once there. It was not too crowded when we went, but I would expect it would not be as pleasurable on weekends or in the summer. I would recommend the first shuttle of the day to avoid crowds and also it is cooler. Lots and lots of shells, but mostly small common shells on the shore. If you have older kids or teens I would highly recommend getting the free snorkel and mask. We found a lot of sand dollars in the water that we would never have found just wading through the water. My son also found a large conch shell by snorkeling. We all enjoyed the hunt! 2 hours was enough for us-nothing else to do there. There are no bathrooms or any concessions on the island.

Thank you for the nice review. Sounds like you found some treasures while you were on the island. Our $25 price is really for the whole 2 hour island experience and you can stay longer if you want and the weather permits. We do tell everyone it is only a 10 min boat ride and most time just point right to it. hope to see you again. We also offer a 90 min narrated sunset dolphin watching cruise if you wanted a bit more boat ride.

This was a nice day trip that you can tailor to be as long as you want. The boat shuttle is a quick 10 minute ride to an island where you are dropped off with umbrellas and masks and snorkels. You can choose to come back on any shuttle which runs every two hours. You can bring your own chairs and coolers. The draw of the island is shell collecting. I did get some interesting shells but nothing extraordinary. Most of the shells are beached and the snorkel and masks did not expose more. I recommend staying in the cove area where the boat drops you. If you go too far to the right, the waves pick up and it is hard to see anything in the water.

We arrived first thing in the morning, and got on the first boat out. There were too many people for the first shuttle, so some had to wait an extra 30 minutes to get out. Once out there is was pretty cool, sort of like a private beach if you walk far enough. Most people hang out near the shuttle landing location. Expect 100-200 people on the island with you which multiple shuttles serving the island. Tons and tons of shells, but all pretty common ones that you can find anywhere. Hoping to find a few more less common ones, but that wasn't that case. Did some snorkeling, saw some dolphins pass by. Overall a fun experience, and would do it next time, just keep your expectations in check. If you are hoping to find conchs and sand dollars littering the island that wasn't the case! If you're looking for some space to lay on the beach, snorkel, and fill a bag with common shells, than you're in the right spot!

derek, thanks for the nice review. spring break is our busiest time of year. everywhere in florida really. most of the year we do not take so many passengers out at one time. shells can change from season to season. people do find sandollars most times, but not always. we hope to see you again soon.
