- Red-Barchetta2011Suffield, Connecticut749 contributionsVery good tourThis museum is a little out of way from the main area which is great. I would highly recommend visiting. It is in a quiet area with less people. We walked to it from St George street area and nice to see the streets and older homes along the way. It was towards end of day but they do a tour every 30 minutes on the hour. There are a number of exhibits and building to explore on your own. You can even see the oldest house on your own but would highly recommend the tour. On our tour it was only us 4 and 2 others who joined later. I think the tour guide nutritive of the history of the house was well done. She had a lot of knowledge which really tied into the history of the whole town. She was very pleasant and answered all the questions. I think this get overlooked but if you want a more real history of St Augustine this is a good place to visit.Visited December 2022Written December 21, 2022
- ChrisHFrederick, Maryland521 contributionsNice visitTwo adults visited here in late January 2023. A nice place to visit. They offer tours on the half hour, which are well worthwhile. The guide was very knowledgeable and informative. We spent maybe three hours here total, but we tend to read most of the information so YMMV. The actual oldest house was the most interesting part of the complex but there was another old house that had an exhibition on surfing in St Augustine, and another with a display of maps over the past 500 years or so. After the tour, you are free to wander about the oldest house taking pictures. Fairly cheap to tour. There is free parking in the lot next to the house or it is a short walk from the main historic area.Visited January 2023Written February 4, 2023
- Richard G53 contributionsOld, not oldestNice historical house and area. Makes you realize this was a big house back then, and we have gotten used to more space. Saw surf museum here(OK). St Francis barracks across the street with cemetery interesting too.Visited February 2023Written February 20, 2023
- alphawolfieGuthrie, Oklahoma602 contributionsolder house - two nationalitiesthis is a great place to actually see the history of how people lived in this area. the bottom floor is spanish and the top is british. you can really understand the difference in the people and how they lived by viewing this house. while we were there several ladies were painting pictures of different house, trees, flowers or other things that make this house unique. this must be a great place to learn to paint nature.Visited April 2023Written April 30, 2023
- mekd2015Decatur, Georgia55 contributionsA Hidden Historic GemOn the advice of our daughter (a history major), we recently toured The Oldest House Museum Complex in St. Augustine. We had the good fortune to have John as our tour guide. He was extraordinary...without any script told us of the rich, diverse history of the "home", and surrounding complex, and the varied generations of families who occupied it. John also shared with us the complex history of St. Augustine, from it's earliest and primitive development. We've visited St. Augustine multiple times, enjoying all this special city has to offer...yet never before this tour of The Oldest House Museum Complex did we realize just how much rich, deep history is here for us to learn about, and learn from.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 20, 2023
- Karen BTampa, Florida4 contributionsInteresting historicalDefinitely worth vising this museum complex. Unexpectedly they also house a surf museum if you're into that! Understand that if it's 100 degrees outside that it's almost that hot inside the oldest house, but still worth doing!Visited July 2023Written July 27, 2023
- tedlong29Gulf Breeze, Florida1,970 contributionsA Must See in St. AugustineI have been coming to St. Augustine for decades and this was my first time visiting here. I am so glad I finally did because it was amazing! The historic significance of this house and complex is fascinating. Loved the way it was laid out. The grounds were beautiful and everything was so well preserved and presented. They also had a surf museum on the grounds which was fun as well. I also have to mention how friendly and helpful the staff was. They clearly had a passion for this place and it showed. If you are visiting St. Augustine, this is a must on your trip.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 5, 2023
- Kevin W48 contributionsWalk In TimeTo even imagine a house surviving decades is incredible, to even walk into its hallowed doorways is even more amazing. The house is simple but it is displayed as if it were lived it by both Spanish and British. The museum part helps tell the story of the city of St Augustine. Ask why there is a cannon ball in the wall? The story might surprise you.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 2, 2023

Our group of 8 dropped in for a quick activity. Who knew? It was great. The building itself was fascinating because the original 1720 tabby floor and coquina walls are still there on the 1st floor. The second floor is "newer" and each room has been kept in it's period style. Great view of the water. The tour guide was lively and talked, not only about the building, but about the families who lived there. There is also a gallery of old water color maps and, of course, a gift shop which is small and mostly books. Free parking just beside. Would be perfect for children because it is small.

We considered this stop while riding the hop-on-hop-off trolley. A lady who got on the trolley at that stop told the group it was one of the best attractions they had seen. Since it was close to our hotel, we went there toward the end of the day. I would agree it was one of the best stops we made during our stay. Our guide, Tom, gave an exciting and informative portrayal of the families who lived in the house during those times. They do give senior discounts. I asked Tom what references he would recommend if we wanted to learn more about the history of the town, he recommended the book “Maria”. It was an excellent book and would recommend buying it before you leave.

The staff here are so nice. The guides were very knowledgable and gave us some neat history. We were able to see the house (upstairs and downstairs) and the kitchen house, the museum, and the outdoor areas. It doesn't take long to go through but it's very neat to see the workings of the house. They are trying very hard to promote social distancing and hand sanitizing. It was a very enjoyable experience for all of us (even our 7 and 5 year olds)!

We greatly enjoyed our tour of the oldest house given by a very informative gentleman (I believe, in conversation, he stated he was originally from Ohio? Apologies that we did not get his name or the woman's name who we also talked to - very friendly)
It's a beautifully maintained property and the grounds are gorgeous (make sure to see the statues!). There's so much to take in, historical-wise. My only wish is the tour lasted a bit longer but we're happy to support these important properties to keep history alive! Also, there is a great small museum that houses interesting information and artifacts and a nicely stocked gift shop.
To a prior negative review's point, no where in the site's current brochures or website does it state oldest in the U.S. It clearly states oldest in Florida OR states oldest Spanish-built home in the U.S. Two important qualifiers.
Highly recommend a visit!

I gave this 5 stars just for our tour guide, I can’t exactly remember her name it was Aunty something on her name tag, she was a cute elderly woman. She was full of information and lively giving the tour which added to it. I loved seeing the building and walking the grounds, the map room was a nice perk. A few different exhibits to explore and not a bad price, considering it helps the historical society.

Our family group of six included two children and all enjoyed touring the oldest house. We found the guides to be very informative and great answering questions. This should be on everyone's list to see in St. Augustine.

We went to the Oldest House for a tour. Even before the tour, the guide told us about the history of Florida and St Augustine. Her tour of the house was wonderful and she told us things about the area which we had not heard before. She painted a picture of life "back then" and made the history come alive.
The grounds are beautiful and well maintained.
