- LivelySD22 contributionsFun for all agesYounger grandkids had fun hunting for the hidden items and older ones enjoyed the history of pirates. Grandparents enjoyed the history of the sunken treasures and the treasure chest. One area was a little gruesome for the youngest in our crowd. Overall, worth the admission price.Pirate history and hidden treasures for the whole family! We're so glad to read that your group enjoyed your visit to the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum. - BakerBlakely, Georgia220 contributionsDecentThe museum was very interesting as well as interactive. There is a lot to look at especially if you have an interest in historical pirates. I did find the movie portion to feel thrown together and lacking, almost an after thought and somewhat out of place. The price was on the higher side, but for a one time visit I found it to be tolerable. Great affordable gift shop.Thank you for visiting us at the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum. - barbibooChampaign, Illinois53 contributionsFun way to learn about pirates.Although this is a small museum, it is very well done. I felt it was presented how Disney would do it with lots of pictures, things to read, life-like mannequins, characters talking to us, etc. To make it more fun, you could find the special hidden boxes throughout the display. If all were found, you could grab a trinket at the end in the gift shop. There was even a spooky room that shared the sounds of what being in the ship's hold might feel like as the pirates were fighting up top. I learned a ton about Sir Francis Drake and so many other pirates that came through Florida in the early days. We were lucky to go through between some student groups, but otherwise it could be claustrophobic with a lot of kids around. We did the self-guided version, but we did see a costumed pirate taking some groups around as well.Hi there! Thank you so much for your detailed review. I felt it was a waste of money. But anyways it had some good info and little things just wish they lowered the price.Hello! We are so sorry to read this review! With over 800 authentic artifacts and multiple hands-on interactive displays, we are sorry that our museum wasn't a five star experience for you! Fun part was the treasure hunt for my 7 yr old granddaughter. Yes it was pricey but it was like all the attractions in St Augustine.Hi there! - debbyrrFlorida86 contributionsDid not get our money's worth! The museum was so crowded that it was exceedingly difficult to enjoy the experience. Our group of six (4 adults and two children aged 4 & 7) felt it was not worth the money for the price of the tickets. We felt very rushed and pushed while trying to view the exhibits. Because of the volume of guests the children were not able to experience the interactive displays. It was disappointing. Had they limited the number of guests going through at once, I would have easily given it an excellent review. When we were leaving we noticed that almost all the young children were crying including one of ours! So I don’t think we were alone in our assessment!Hi Debby. We are so sorry that you had a rushed experience in our museum. You are absolutely correct that the museum can experience large crowds during peak times. We always offer our visitors the opportunity to return later in the day should this be the case, and we truly apologize that you might not have been made aware of this option.Written May 22, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2023Written April 13, 2023
- DAR2 contributionsNot a good value for the moneyThere was a fair amount of information and some interesting displays. However, it felt very crowded and it was difficult to get close enough to read about the displays with so many people crowded into the museum. The "route" through the museum was not readily apparent which led to backtracking or more congestion. The scavenger hunt, while interesting (especially for the kids) also led to many youngsters running back through the museum to find items they missed.Hi there! Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback on our museum, especially regarding crowding! - KFS_386Saint Albans, Vermont552 contributionsNot Bad, Not GreatThis is a small museum but carves out an interesting niche. They have a 'scavenger hunt' that encourages patrons to spend time closely observing artifacts. When we visited, the museum was packed and we noticed people were making large purchases. Casual observers (like us) will likely be underwhelmed, but if someone in your party is a history/pirate buff, this is an ideal attraction to visit.Thank you for visiting us at The St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum! We (four history-loving adults) visited here on Dec. 31 as part of our three days exploring St. Augustine; we had purchased discounted combination tickets online with the Colonial Quarter (reviewed separately).
This was a fun and interesting museum to check out, with nice artifacts and displays on a topic many of us probably know little about beyond popular culture references. As one learns here, piracy was an unfortunate reality of the times (the descriptions of typical “punishments” that were doled out was gruesome). All, in all, it took us about 45 minutes to walk through and see everything. As a history buff, I found it added to my knowledge of the area’s history and of piracy in general. (We did not encounter Captain Mayhem during our visit.)
My only complaint here is that the exhibit areas are small and a bit cramped. It didn’t take too many new visitors entering behind us to crowd the available space, making it hard to linger at exhibits to read all the informational signage, as I wished.

Thank you so much for taking the time to make us a part of your St. Augustine journey - we truly appreciate it! It's true, we don't have a lot of space to feature the 800+ artifacts and exhibits throughout our museum, but I am glad to read that you found a lot of history to learn about and enjoy.
Thank you again for bringing your crew to spend a while with ours - we hope to see you again on your next visit to the Nation's Oldest City!

This is a fine museum for someone that is more into pirates than my husband and myself. It seemed over priced for what we got out of it. Oh well, at the very least it was something different than we’ve been to before. There is not parking at the museum, you have to pay to park in the public lots, so make sure to spend some time checking out all the area has to offer.

We understand that we're not everyone's cup of tea, and that parking in St. Augustine can be a challenge some days, to say the least. We do want to thank you for taking the time to spend with us and for exploring the treasures we offer throughout the museum. We hope that you had a great time on the rest of your journey through the Nation's Oldest City!

Two adults visited this attraction on a Wednesday afternoon in early January. We spent about three hours but we like to read all the descriptions, and there were a lot of them. Also, there were many interactive exhibits telling the stories of famous pirates.
Note that many but certainly not all of the museum exhibits require reading in order to get the most out of them.
An enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. Plus this time of year, they're open until 7pm, whereas most other attractions in town close around 5pm.

It was pouring so I thought I would explore this museum while waiting for the clouds to depart. I wouldn't say that I am a huge pirate fan but I was impressed with the museum layout and would go through it again if I found myself in St. Augustine with different friends. I really enjoyed the treasure hunt game that you have the opportunity of playing after you pay the admission fee. . This little game slowed me down enough to read more display boards than I normally would have thereby adding more time to my visit. Word of advice - be prepared for a lot of children and plan on spending about an hour here.

The museum self guided tour took us an hour and twenty minutes and was time well spent. The tour included many stations and display cases of weapons, salvaged treasure, and pirate artifacts, including one of only 3 existing "jolly roger" pirate flags in the world. A replica gun deck of a pirate ship provided the visitor with a glimpse of pirate life. One station had a digital book that described the lives and deaths of many infamous pirates such as Blackbeard, Henry Morgan, Black Bart, Stede Bonnet, Anne Bonney, and Capt. Kidd. One of the artifacts displayed was Captain Kidd's engraved treasure chest! You have the opportunity to pick up a salvaged gold bar as well. If you are a senior, you get in for $12.99. Very enjoyable!

Our group of 7 were all adults, and did the self-guided wandering around tour. Lots of displays and interactive screens seemed to engage all ages there. We liked reading about each pirate, and life on a ship. The artifacts from the era are numerous and include more than we expected.
There was a guided tour by a character in costume available every couple of hours. Call for times. Ramp entrance available for easy access.

Thank you for coming to see us! We're glad that you were able to enjoy both the educational and entertaining aspects of the museum as you took the self-guided tour through our exhibition. It's true that we do offer a pirate-guided tour 4 times on Saturdays (1030AM, Noon, 130PM, and 3PM) and on various dates throughout the year.
We're pleased that you came to visit!

This is a serious look at the importance of the Golden Age of pirates. Many artifacts and replicas combine with interpretations to give this history its due. There are also good connections to search and salvage efforts that have given us a much more real view of this time. The museum is designed to be enjoyable as well as informative as you imagine to walking around on a pirate ship or visiting an island and you even get a story from the head of Blackbeard but the history is not lost. Visit this museum so you can have fun and learn at the same. Don’t we wish school was more like that!

My 6 and 9 year old liked the treasure hunt going through the museum, but once that was over they were bored. I think we were through the museum in 20-30 minutes. the gift shop was more exciting for them, ha, and it was very small and packed with people checking in. i thought it was overpriced for how quickly we were able to go through it.

We visited on a cold day where we wanted to do ANYTHING inside. We found this museum along our walk and gave it a shot. Not only do you get to go into a really cool, interactive, museum with endless pirate history, but you can also participate in a scavenger hunt. We had a lot of fun. Definitely recommend.

Our Grandsons are 9 and 11. We did all of the places of interests in St. Augustine. This was our favorite! The museum is authentic and has great history and artifacts, take the time to go through it and read the displays. An excellent pirate garbed guide entered and offered a tour, if you get this opportunity take it! He shared a wealth of knowledge and kept the kids of all ages entertained as well. I wish we would have gotten his name, long white hair and beard, great deep voice, well spoken and pirate expert. We would do this again!

Thank you so much for taking the time to bring your crew in to see ours! We're so glad that you were able to explore all that we had to offer and even interact with one of our random, roving pirates - who, I believe, by your description, to be "Captain Mayhem." I did not see any wheelchairs available. It might be a little tight for an electric mobility device. I would call them and ask how they feel about it.

This is a self-guided tour through a museum. It's open everyday (I'm sure there are exceptions for Easter and Christmas). For an additional fee you can also tour the Colonial Village.
How long should I expect to be there?

If I remember correctly it was not long, you can do the tour which was maybe a half hour maybe 45min, but well worth the tour. Or you can just go look through the museum on your own!

This may be a dumb question, but are pets allowed? I have an ESA (canine) that is under 15 lbs, is quiet, and can be in a bag/carrier the entire time.

They may not permit the dog, only because the artifacts are so rare and ancient they take a lot of precautions in protecting them. I would recommend calling ahead and double checking. The staff is friendly and it won't feel like a dumb question. Goodluck.

In regards to parking? Where and how much does it cost?
Cindy S
St. Augustine, FL2 contributions
If you come early in the day you can usually park across the street at the Castillo de San Marcos parking lot which is metered. I believe it's $1.00 per hour. If you are doing other things downtown you can park at the parking garage all day for $12. It's a short walk from the garage to the Pirate Museum. I hope we see you soon!
