About
The "Medieval Torture Museum" reminds us just how much suffering humanity can inflict in the name of cause and justice when the right tools are placed in the hands of fanatics, madmen and tyrants. The exhibit fills more than 4000 sq. ft. Spend an hour here and you will better know the nature of fear. Are you brave enough?

    Interesting museum
We walked up during the busy New Years Eve weekend and were able to get right in around 2 pm. We toured the medieval torture museum and did not add on the micro art gallery. We asked for the audio tour because we had read it was good and I’m so glad we did. The audio tour was really helpful in learning about all the disturbing exhibits. When we bought our tickets there was no mention of an audio tour being available, so you have to know to ask for it. We took our 15 and 17 year old kids and they enjoyed it but I would not recommend taking younger kids. The content is not appropriate and the exhibits are graphic.
Glad you enjoyed the museum. We do mention the audio guide when we talk about the combo deal.

    Fun stop
This was a nice museum to walk through, gruesome displays, but that is what these torture devices are. I wish there was more information written by each display but still a great experience. There is no parking at the museum, it is pay to park public parking, so make sure to spend some time looking at everything in this area.

    Very Interesting
Our first visit to this attraction and we did the self guided tour. They have so many different items and plaques with descriptions of different items in the museum all over. The overall feeling is creepy but it suits the items you’re there to see. Interesting place to visit.
Thank you for the review! We are so glad you enjoyed our museum and exhibits!

Honestly I wasn’t too impressed. I really didn’t expect much out of it and that’s what I got. You have basically one floor of items to look at and it took us about 20 minutes. Every torture device or tool comes with and explanation of when and where it originated but it didn’t tell you how it was used. Some of the pieces you can figure it out by looking but some you could not. I got the feeling that if I’d paid extra to get the audio tour, it would’ve told me how some of the pieces worked. I also found it to be a little too dark in some of the rooms. I realized the owners are trying to create a specific atmosphere but in some of the corners it’s so dark it’s hard to read the descriptions. Also some of the rooms are not very large and you can only fit one couple in there without being right on top of each other. Not too great but not too bad. I probably wouldn’t recommend this place to any of my friends. For my wife and I, it was about $29.

Hello, I'm sorry you did not enjoy the museum as much as you may have hoped. Our museum does normally take about 30-40 minutes but since it is self guided it can easily take less or more time. And regarding the descriptions of the pieces, the audio guide does give a bit more insight as to how the devices were used through storytelling but we do understand the plaques could use some updating or rewriting. Also our staff in the gift shop is always happy to answer any questions you may have had or even give more in depth information into a device or method you were interested in. Lastly with the darkness, we did go for a creepy, dark atmosphere but we never intend for it to be so dark you cannot read. I have noticed some of our spotlights are aimed at the wrong spot or a candle or two near the plaques might be off so we will try and improve on this. I hope you enjoyed your time in St Augustine.

The museum offered the creepy entertainment we were hoping for, but we wanted more information on the use of the devices. Reading the reviews here, it sounds like we needed the audio tour - except we didn't know there was one. Not sure if that is because we bought tickets from a third party offsite (at the Old Jail), but it resulted in the tour feeling incomplete.

In terms of the presentation itself.. a high percentage of the descriptions have significant typos; we're baffled that the creators of the collection wouldn't want to pay someone to proofread the descriptions so they have a professional presentation. Also, although we know they were going for a specific ambience, the rooms were really dark. It made it much harder to see and read.

The last note has to do with the other visitors. Several couples brought their toddlers with them; we got to listen to parents explaining the "dead" bodies as "sleeping" and listen to children crying off and on the entire time we were there. This museum is simply not appropriate for young children. Perhaps the museum could consider instituting a required age for attendance?

Glad you were able to enjoy the museum. The old jail tickets unfortunately doesn't include the audio guide but I have asked them as well as my employees to mention it as an add on option. As for the description most of the errors you see are translation errors. We do keep candles and spotlight on throughout the museum to keep the ambience as if you went back in time. We do not discourage visitors from using the flashlights on their phones if they feel it is needed. As for other visitors we have a content warning we give to all parents. We do require a minimum age of 18 for someone who is going by themselves we just cannot take a parent's right to choose what their child can see away from them.

This is great - teens will be fine, though young kids might be a little scared. My 13 and 16 year old had no problems at all. Had both well known devices, as well as lesser known. Nice activity in the heart of the historical district.

This is an absolute must do museum while in St. Augustine. I knew I was in for an interestingly good time when I was boisterously greeted by the folks at the ticket counter. And I was not disappointed. This place is bigger than it looks and full of photo opportunities. Well worth the price of admission.

Very unique museum especially if you’re into the medieval era like I am. My bf and I stopped here the first evening/night that we arrived in the area. It was really enlightening to learn about one of the “most miserable times” in human existence, and just how horrible some of these torture devices were!!

Ending the tour with the “belts” wall was highly entertaining. We did the micro art tour too, and it was fascinating seeing the lovely and detailed colored pieces up close. Diane at the counter was very friendly and informative (and rocked a really great pink eyeshadow). Impressive displays and accompanying write-ups.

A bizarre and scary display of old torture devices and methods from the distance past. Worth the visit for the curious. I wouldn't recommend this for any kids under age...either it will be boring or frightening as they do have graphic displays.

Really cool and unique museum. If you find yourself in Saint Augustine I highly recommend that you go here. Really creepy, but cool stuff. Great opportunity to learn about all the messed up stuff that has occurred throughout history in different cultures and civilizations.

Excellent and thorough collection. Definitely helps to do the audio tour. It adds color and anecdotes to each piece that you don't get by just reading the placards. Enjoyed that some replicas were interactive! And you really could get up close to see them. Not for the overly sensitive, but a macabre and fascinating part of human history that this museum gives a good education on. Also love the special touches to create the right atmosphere to view such items!

You can’t miss this museum, you really have to have an interest & the stomach for the torture devices and techniques used on people. You have to include the audio to get a clear picture of what took place. I loved it and can’t wait to see it again!

My friend and I went here because we were curious. We only did the torture museum and not the art part. It had all kinds of cool stuff with some good history. I would not recommend for little or sensitive kids as most of it is disturbing. We had a good time though and learned some new things.
